20100213890 | METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR DETECTION OF COUNTERFEIT BATTERIES - A method and system for detecting the use of an unauthorized battery pack in a portable electronic device. The method comprises monitoring a temperature profile of at least one battery cell in a battery pack during an operation of the portable electronic device. The temperature profile is determined in accordance with an output of an internal temperature sensing circuit in the battery pack. If the temperature profile is determined to be atypical, an indication is provided that the battery pack is an unauthorized battery pack. For example, if the temperature profile does not show an expected temperature rise during a charging operation, a visual indication can be provided. The indication can also trigger the control of charging or discharging operations of the portable electronic device. Charging can be terminated or the device shut down to avoid a potentially catastrophic thermal runaway event. The device can also be operated in a reduced power mode in response to the indication. | 08-26-2010 |

In at least one of the battery and the communication device is provided a magnetic shield portion for routing magnetic flux away from the receiver when the radio is in operation. The magnetic shield portion can be incorporated into at least one of the battery and the communication device. When the battery is inserted into mobile communications devicemobile communication device, the magnetic shield portion is located substantially between a battery portion, in the battery, and the receiver. | 01-20-2011 |
20110279092 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CHARGING A POWER PACK OF A PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE - A method includes: receiving a temperature indication, the temperature indication being a function of a temperature of a power pack of a portable electronic device; determining, as a function of the temperature indication, whether the temperature is within an elevated operating temperature range; and reducing a charge termination voltage and a charging current when the temperature is within the elevated operating temperature range. | 11-17-2011 |
20120065909 | TIME DAMPENED CHARGING INDICATOR - Systems and methods to determine a power pack charging state. A difference between a first power pack capacity of a power pack at a first time and a second power pack capacity of the power pack at a second time is estimated, where the second time is a time duration after the first time. A determination is made that the charging state is “not charging” if the power pack capacity decreases between the two times. A determination is made that the charging state is “charging” if the power pack capacity increases between the two times. If a change in power pack capacity is not observed between the two times, the power pack charging state of the previous determination is used. Various techniques are used to determine the difference in power pack charging state. | 03-15-2012 |
20120194130 | POWER PACK PARTIAL FAILURE DETECTION AND REMEDIAL CHARGING CONTROL - Systems and methods to detect a failure of a subset of component power packs within a multiple component rechargeable power pack. At least one parameter of a charging current that is provided for a time duration to a rechargeable power pack is determined. A measured capacity change quantity for the rechargeable power pack during the time duration is estimated. The measured capacity change quantity is compared, after the time duration, to an expected capacity change quantity that is based upon the at least one parameter. A determination is made that at least one component power pack within the rechargeable power pack has failed based on a difference between the measured capacity change quantity and the expected capacity change quantity. A charging current parameter is modified in response to the determining that the at least one component power pack has failed. | 08-02-2012 |
20130158936 | METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR DETECTING UNAUTHORIZED BATTERIES OR TAMPERING BY MONITORING A THERMAL PROFILE - According to one aspect, a portable electronic device having a heat generating component, a thermal sensor, an energy storage device for powering the portable electronic device, a thermal element thermally coupled to the heat generating component, the energy storage device, and the thermal sensor. The thermal element is sized and shaped so that heat generated by the heat generating component flows through the thermal element towards the thermal sensor and interacts with the energy storage device. The thermal sensor is used to monitor a thermal profile for the thermal element, and the monitored thermal profile is compared with an expected thermal profile to determine if the integrity of the portable electronic device has been compromised. | 06-20-2013 |
