It is expected that the wheel will be attached to other vehicle wheel-related componenets that are formed of metal compositions (for example, steel or cast iron components) that may lead to the corrosion of the magnesium wheel. Such attachment surfaces of the magnesium wheel are oxidized to form an integral and durable oxide layer on the magnesium wheel. When the magnesium wheel is attached to vehicle wheel supporting components of other alloys, the oxide layer-coated surfaces of the magnesium wheel are electrochemically isolated from the non-magnesium materials to prevent oxidation of the wheel or attached components.11-12-2009
20090302009ELECTRODE FOR SPOT WELDING - Spot welding electrodes with generally dome shaped welding faces are provided with surface features for welding both aluminum alloy sheet assemblies and steel sheet assemblies. A raised circular plateau is formed on the central axis of the dome and, in one embodiment, a suitable number of round bumps are formed in concentric spacing from adjacent the circumference of the plateau toward the circular edge of the welding face. For welding steel workpieces the plateau mainly serves as the engaging feature of the electrode. Both the plateau and concentric bumps are used in penetrating light metal surfaces for suitable current passage. Zinc-based alloys of aluminum, or of aluminum and magnesium, may be beneficially applied to the inner faces of the steel sheets or to both the inner and outer sheet faces. Substantially pure zinc coatings may be applied over the zinc-based alloys or over an otherwise bare outer steel sheet surface. Joining surfaces of the workpieces are pressed against the interposed reactive material and heated. The reactive material alloys or reacts with the workpiece surfaces consuming some of the surface material in forming a reaction product comprising a low melting liquid that removes oxide films and other surface impediments to a welded bond across the interface. 20110143161COULOMB DAMPING FEATURES USING ULTRASONIC WELDING - Selected surface regions of coulomb vibration damping strips are bonded face-to-face by ultrasonic welding to a surface region of an article that may experience excessive vibration in use. In one embodiment, prior to welding, the intended facing side of the damping strip is treated to form surface regions that are oxidized, roughened, or coating so that the treated regions do not weld to the article surface. In another embodiment of the invention the ultrasonic welding process is controlled so as to produce regions (sometimes randomly interposed regions) of welded and non-welded regions between the damping strip and adjacent article surface. The unbonded regions of the otherwise welded strip lie in closely-spaced, interfacial, frictional contact with the adjacent article surface to damp vibration in the article. Other processes may be used for welding a damping strip to a surface of an article while leaving un-bonded, friction damping regions between regions of the damping strip and the facing surface of the article.06-16-2011
