20110102788 | Tunable Quantum Cascade Lasers and Photoacoustic Detection of Trace Gases, TNT, TATP and Precursors Acetone and Hydrogen Peroxide - Methods and apparatus for broad tuning of single wavelength quantum cascade lasers and the use of light output from such lasers for highly sensitive detection of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, acetylene, and vapors of explosives such as trinitrotoluene (TNT) and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) and TATP's precursors including acetone and hydrogen peroxide. These methods and apparatus are also suitable for high sensitivity, high selectivity detection of other chemical compounds including chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. A quantum cascade laser (QCL) system that better achieves single mode, continuous, mode-hop free tuning for use in L-PAS (laser photoacoustic spectroscopy) by independently coordinating gain chip current, diffraction grating angle and external cavity length is described. An all mechanical method that achieves similar performance is also described. Additionally, methods for improving the sensor performance by critical selection of wavelengths are presented. | 05-05-2011 |

20100119193 | Ultrafast and ultralow threshold single emitter optical switch - Electrical control of the emitter of a coupled quantum emitter-resonant cavity structure is provided. Electrodes are disposed near a semiconductor quantum dot coupled to a semiconductor optical cavity such that varying an applied bias at the electrodes alters an electric field at the quantum dot. Optical input and output ports are coupled to the cavity, and an optical response of the device relates light emitted from the output port to light provided to the input port. Altering the applied bias at the electrodes is capable of altering the optical response. Preferably, the closest electrode to the cavity is disposed between or away from angular lobes of the cavity mode, to reduce loss caused by the proximity of electrode to cavity. The present approach is applicable to both waveguide-coupled devices and non-waveguide devices. | 05-13-2010 |

20130185509 | COMPUTING MACHINE MIGRATION - Systems and methods for migration between computing machines are disclosed. The source and target machines can be either physical or virtual; the source can also be a machine image. The target machine is connected to a snapshot or image of the source machine file system, and a redo-log file is created on the file system associated with the target machine. The target machine begins operation by reading data directly from the snapshot or image of the source machine file system. Thereafter, all writes are made to the redo-log file, and subsequent reads are made from the redo-log file if it contains data for the requested sector or from the snapshot or image if it does not. The source machine continues to be able to run separately and simultaneously after the target machine begins operation. | 07-18-2013 |

20140122325 | CARD FRAUD DETECTION UTILIZING REAL-TIME IDENTIFICATION OF MERCHANT TEST SITES - A system and method for detecting a test event involving a financial transaction device at a merchant having a merchant profile is disclosed. The method includes receiving data associated with a transaction involving a financial transaction device; calculating a score using at least the transaction data; comparing the score to a threshold value; and attaching a merchant probe flag to the merchant profile if the score exceeds the threshold value. The merchant probe flag indicates a likelihood that a test event has occurred at the merchant based on the score. If a test event has occurred, then financial transaction devices involved in the test event can have their profiles updated to reflect that they have been probed. If a financial transaction device that has been probed is used in a subsequent transaction, then a specialized fraud scoring model can be used to provide an improved fraud risk score. | 05-01-2014 |
