METHOD FOR OPERATING A COUETTE DEVICE TO CREATE AND STUDY EMULSIONS - A method for generating and characterizing an emulsion. The method provides a Couette device having first and second cylindrical members that define an annulus between them. The second cylindrical member is rotatably driven with respect to the first cylindrical member. Two or more substances each in a non-emulsified state are injected into the annulus. The Couette device is operated in a first mode to generate an emulsion from the two or more substances. The Couette device is also operated in a second mode to measure various attributes of the emulsion. | 07-30-2009
METHOD AND COMPOSITION TO DIVERT FLUIDS AT HIGH TEMPERATURES - Methods of treating a subterranean formation as a portion of steam-assisted gravity drainage operation including providing a fluid containing a diverting agent, injecting the fluid into a first wellbore, allowing the diverting agent to divert fluid placement, performing steam-assisted gravity drainage, and producing formation fluids from a second wellbore. | 04-12-2012

SINGLE-POLARIZATION FIBER - Embodiments of the invention relate to a single-polarization fiber that may include a W-type refractive-index profile having a depressed region along an unguided principal axis of the fiber, and a quasi step-index profile along a guided principal axis of the fiber. The quasi step-index profile may have a depressed region with a radial extent at least twice that of the depressed region along the unguided axis. | 10-27-2011

Portable ultrasonic instrument used to distinguish among pig meat and meats of other origin - The technology is based on subjecting the meat sample to an ultrasonic signal, of a specific frequency, and detects its reflected component. The detected signal will be analyzed using a fully developed and commercially available digital signal processing techniques to extracted ultrasonic parameters that can be directly related to elastic properties of the sample under investigation (piece of meat) and hence used to distinguish among the meats in question. | 06-16-2011

DIFFERENTIAL GEAR ASSEMBLY AND METHOD - An assembly of a crown wheel and a differential casing of a differential gear assembly is adapted to welding. The differential casing has a circular flange with an axially extending lip engaged in a circular groove of the crown wheel which is further relieved at a radially outer side to give clearance for a high energy welding beam. An interface between the crown wheel and the circular flange is in one example a frusto-conical surface, which presents an oblique angle to the welding beam. | 08-20-2009

Differential pressure anemometer - A handheld airflow measurement device is provided that employs pitot-static principles instead of an anemometer. A pitot-static device has the advantage that it needs no moving parts and has little or no inertia. In a first aspect, therefore, a pitot-static device comprises a first plurality of hollow spokes and a second plurality of hollow spokes, the spokes of the first plurality being connected so as to allow fluid communication between their hollow interiors and each having at least one aperture facing in a first axial direction that is transverse to the radial direction, the spokes of the second plurality being connected so as to allow fluid communication between their hollow interiors and each having at least one aperture facing in a second axial direction that is opposed to the first axial direction. Such a device can be made symmetrical, meaning that it can be assembled from two identical half-mouldings. The second plurality of spokes can each have an aperture at the end thereof—additional to or as a replacement for the reverse-directed apertures. The device can comprise a handle for manual support, to allow it to be carried and located as required. In another aspect, a pitot-static device comprises a first plurality of hollow spokes extending radially from a central hub and a second plurality of hollow spokes extending in a radial direction from a central hub, the spokes of the first plurality being connected so as to allow fluid communication between their hollow interiors and each having at least one aperture facing in a first axial direction that is transverse to the radial direction, the spokes of the second being connected so as to allow fluid communication between their hollow interiors and each having at least one aperture, the device further comprising a handle for manual support. Having a handle, the device will be suited to portable uses; by combining this with a pitot-static measurement of airflow, the problems inherent in anemometer-based devices are avoided. The device can further comprise a ring around the central hub, the spokes extending from the hub to an inner face of the ring. | 04-28-2011

PLASMA CRUCIBLE SEALING - A plasma crucible has a through bore and two tubes butt scaled on to the end faces of the crucible. One of the tubes is closed prior to the filling of the crucible. The tube is tipped off and worked in a glass lathe to form it to have a flat end. After evacuation, dosing and gas fill, the other tube is tipped off in the similar manner. | 04-19-2012
