TEACHING SYSTEM AND METHOD - A student using a teaching system, for example, to learn a language, selects a concept, for example a word or phrase, which he does not recall. On a display, he is immediately presented with an array of images or graphics related to the selected concept. For example, the graphics or images may be from previous lessons which involve the concept. If the student then selects one of the images or graphics he is presented with a list of all the concepts, for example, words and phrases, associated with that image or graphic. The student is thereby able to recollect the selected concept in the context of all of his previous experiences with it. If that does not restore the selected concept to his recollection, he is able to select additional images and graphics, in each case being presented with an additional list of related concepts, making it likely that the originally selected concept will be recalled. | 09-30-2010
Method and Apparatus for Improving Language Communication - In a communication between individuals having different levels of skill in a language, communication by the more skilled individual is controlled so as to keep it at a level understandable by the lesser skilled individual. For example, a native speaker's communication with a student learning his language (the target language) is monitored by an interface and compared with a stored model representing the student's knowledge and ability in the language. Should the native speaker communicate in a way that would not be understood by the student, for example, by using vocabulary or a sentence structure beyond the student's ability, the interface will notify the native speaker. The interface might then suggest an alternate word or sentence structure to the native speaker, inviting him to use the alternate communication. The native speaker can then substitute and send the alternate communication. | 12-23-2010
TEACHING SYSTEM COMBINING LIVE AND AUTOMATED INSTRUCTION - Just prior to a scheduled session with a live instructor, a student is presented with an automated lesson which prepares him for the live instruction. The automatic lesson presents and practices skills that will be needed for the live lesson. Thus, when the instructor appears, the student is entirely prepared for the live lesson and optimum use may be made if the instructor's time. After the live lesson is complete, the student may be returned to an automated debriefing, which helps imprint major aspects of the live lesson of the students of mine. Thus, the learning process is improved through the combination of live and automatic instruction. | 03-22-2012

Universal Lace / Cord Lock System - A cord locking system is provided that allows a user to easily, rapidly, and effectively lock/unlock a lace in one single-handed, swift motion. The locking device includes a pair of arms that can freely rotate around a swivel point within a base that lock teeth against the lace by using compression forces controlled by a spring. The arrangement of the arms protrude outside the base for easy engagement/disengagement, with a mechanical advantage using leverage to reduce the required forces to act against the spring force at the teeth. The arms are configured in a curved scissors-like handle for an easy swift grasp contoured to the shape of your fingers with a single-handed motion. The most basic application is in outdoor sports, such as snowboarding. A snowboard rider can easily lock the boot laces with a swift motion and just as easily disengage the locking device under harsh, frozen, winter conditions while wearing gloves. Each boot would include a pull tool on the end of the boot lace with each side of the lace running through the assembled locking device. To disengage the locking mechanism, lift two fingers upward so that the teeth open and allow the device to slide up and down the laces toward the preferred location. To lock, press the arms toward the base to tighten further into position and then let go of the locking device allowing the spring to maintain the locked position. | 03-24-2011

Further, calls can be re-packed from existing segments of the carrier tree to other segments to maintain calls having common characteristics in contiguous groups, and to maintain idle segments another contiguous group(s). Accordingly, the wireless carrier tree can be packed and managed more efficiently, providing greater throughput and reduced contention for resources. | 08-06-2009 |
Wi-Fi Intelligent Selection Engine - Devices, systems, and methods are disclosed to offload the usage of a cellular network by intelligent selection of broadband network connections such as Wi-Fi access points. A Wi-Fi transceiver on a mobile device is activated when certain conditions are met, such as a time, location, recognition of a radiofrequency (RF) environment, etc. The conditions are correlated with a database of known locations in which a one or more Wi-Fi access points are determined to exist. The Wi-Fi transceiver on the mobile device is activated and commanded to connect to a particular Wi-Fi access point. Dynamic intelligence ensures that the appropriate connection method is used, and minimizes handovers to networks or access points that are unreliable or that are predicted to become inaccessible to the mobile device. | 11-24-2011

PORTABLE TRANSFORMER WITH SAFETY INTERLOCK - A portable apparatus for voltage transformation is capable of temporarily augmenting a power transformer. A transformer with a first medium voltage primary winding, a second medium voltage primary winding and a low voltage secondary winding is selectably coupled to a plurality of medium voltage electrical power input couplings capable of temporarily coupling with medium voltage power on a plant. An interlocked switch selectably couples the medium voltage electrical power input couplings to the medium voltage primary windings of the transformer such that only one medium voltage primary winding of the transformer is coupled at a time to the medium voltage electrical power input couplings. The interlocked switch can use a captive key system to prevent more than one secondary winding from being simultaneously connected. Medium voltage circuit protection devices such as fuses are included. A low voltage circuit protection device, operatively coupled to the low voltage secondary windings, provides low voltage power. An interlocked couplings door lockably covers the medium voltage electrical power input couplings and a fuse door lockably covers the fuses such that no door can be unlocked when a medium voltage primary winding of the transformer is coupled to the medium voltage electrical power input couplings. The portable apparatus can be carried on a vehicular trailer. | 08-04-2011

Nanothermocouple Detector Based on Thermoelectric Nanowires - A nanothermocouple detector includes a nanowire coupled across two electrodes. The two electrodes are electrically connected to an amplifier. The two electrodes generally have a separation of about five micrometers to about thirty micrometers across which the nanowire is coupled. A focusing element is disposed to admit photons that fall on the focusing element onto the nanowire to heat it. A voltage change across the nanowire caused by the heating of the nanowire by the light is detected by the amplifier. The voltage change corresponds to the energy absorbed from the light by the nanowire. The color of a single photon can be detected using such device. An array of such devices can be used for sensing light on a two-dimensional scale, thereby providing an image showing small variances in the energies of the light impinging upon the detector array. | 03-15-2012
