20110134333Inflight entertainment system video display unit with swappable entertainment processor board - A video display unit (VDU) for an inflight entertainment (IFE) system, and a main circuit board and swappable entertainment processor board for use therein. The swappable entertainment processor board detachably engages with the main circuit board, allowing a main circuit board of a single design configuration to be deployed on VDUs throughout an aircraft (or across a fleet of aircraft) with entertainment processor boards of various design configurations that support different IFE feature sets. In addition to facilitating differentiated IFE services, the present invention permits rapid deployment of new technologies through redesign and swapping of entertainment processor boards. Moreover, the main circuit board may be advantageously designed to accept an industry standard entertainment processor board, which allows an entire shipset of VDUs (or a subset thereof) to be upgraded by simply swapping-in an entertainment processor board compliant with the latest version of the industry standard.06-09-2011

20110162015INFLIGHT COMMUNICATION SYSTEM - An inflight communication system is disclosed. In some embodiments, the system includes a video display unit (VDU) with a detachable module having a plurality of user interface elements thereon to facilitate, for example, recovery from failure of one of the user interface elements in that the detachable module can be replaced without replacing the entire VDU. In some embodiments, the system includes a VDU with integrated and/or rendered flight attendant call button and/or reading light control button. In some embodiments, the system includes a public address (PA) system that bypasses the IFE head end servers when delivering PA audio to seat audio/visual (A/V) systems, thereby reducing or eliminating the risk of PA audio output failure on seat A/V systems due to server crashes and improving synchronization between the PA audio output on the public loudspeakers and the seat A/V systems.06-30-2011
