20090180159COMPOUND CURVED CONCENTRATOR BASED ILLUMINATOR - A document illuminator comprising a light-transmissive element having nonlinear walls. The walls are shaped in the form of a compound parabolic concentrator with an optically inverted configuration. A diffusive optical source receives light from a side emitting LED embedded therein and redirects it to an aperture along with other light rays that go through total internal reflection from the nonlinear walls. The reflected light rays that are collected at the aperture are in turn transmitted at high power and uniform luminescence to illuminate a document for scanning.07-16-2009

20080291202Plenoptic system for recording images from sheets - A system for recording an image as digital data comprises a photosensor array and a plenoptic set, including a main lens and a lenticular grating, to enable the photosensor array to obtain plenoptic image data from the sheet. A subset of the plenoptic image data is selected, such as according to a predetermined object distance, to obtain image data for a focused image. The subset of the plenoptic image can be selected after the scanning, so that prescanning of an unusual-shaped image-bearing object, such as an open book, is avoided.11-27-2008
20090047032SYSTEM FOR MEASURING MARKING MATERIAL ON A SURFACE, SUCH AS IN COLOR XEROGRAPHY - A printing apparatus has a substantially shiny photoreceptor imaging surface, and a photosensor array disposed to receive specularly-reflected light from the imaging surface. A quantity of toner is placed on the imaging surface, and data is derived based on light reflected from the imaging surface. The reflected light is filtered to a color effectively complementary to the toner color. The system avoids noise caused by diffusely-reflected light from powdered toner.02-19-2009

20100092083IN-LINE LINEAR VARIABLE FILTER BASED SPECTROPHOTOMETER - A system for providing color analysis of a toner image on an image bearing surface with a spectrophotometer is provided. The system includes an illuminator positioned adjacent to the image bearing surface and configured to emit a light beam at the image bearing surface, a linear sensor positioned adjacent to the image bearing surface and configured to receive the light reflecting off the toner image on the image bearing surface, a gradient index lens placed in the optical path of the light beams reflecting off the image bearing surface between the image bearing surface and the linear variable filter; and the linear variable filter positioned between the linear sensor and the gradient index lens. The system is devoid of a collimating lens positioned in between the gradient index lens and the linear variable filter, and the linear variable filter and the linear sensor are spaced apart by a gap.04-15-2010
