20100072409RECLOSABLE VACUUM-TIGHT PRESSURE-RELIEF DEVICE HAVING A DEFORMABLE SEAL MEMBER - A pressure-relief valve assembly is improved in that sealing surfaces on both the valve seat and valve head are confrontationally disposed annular planar surfaces oriented substantially perpendicular to the valve axis. A resilient valve seal is formed of a material which deforms to a predetermined extent into sealing engagement against both sealing surfaces when compressed by the spring biasing force. When a vacuum exists the combination of the spring force and a holding force created by a pressure differential acts to increase the extent of compression between the resilient valve seal and both sealing surfaces sufficient to create a vacuum-tight seal. The magnitude of the spring biasing force in discrete increments may be adjusted by varying the degree of threaded engagement between members forming the valve housing.03-25-2010

20100024331DISTRIBUTION ANGLE PLATE FOR A CONCRETE FLOOR SYSTEM AND METHOD THEREFOR - A distribution angle plate for a concrete floor system in a multi-level building is disclosed. The plate helps to create a joist bearing point at the interior surface of a vertical structural wall and proximate the top portion of the vertical structural wall. Decking may be laid flat over the top surface of the steel joist and the top surface of the vertical structural wall. This allows the decking to be screwed, welded, or shot directly to the top surface of the vertical structural wall and the top of the steel joist on the same horizontal plane. This also provides for a direct shear attachment at the perimeter of each vertical structural wall. Any height of concrete can then be poured on top of the decking, steel or wood, on a flat continuous plane. This creates a continuous solid mass between vertical structural walls in multi-story buildings, with no voids between floors.02-04-2010

20110300570METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR GENERATING SPATIALLY AND TEMPORALLY CONTROLLABLE CONCENTRATION GRADIENTS - The ability to rapidly generate concentration gradients of diffusible molecules has important applications in many chemical and biological studies. The present invention is directed to methods and systems for generating spatially and temporally controllable concentration gradients of molecules (i.e. proteins or toxins) in a portable microfluidic device. The formation of the concentration gradients can be initiated by an induced forward flow and further optimized during an induced backward flow. The forward and backward flows can be either passively induced and/or actively pumped. The centimeter-length gradients along the microfluidic channel can be spatially and temporally controlled by the backward flow. The gradient profile was stabilized by stopping the flow. In one example, a stabilized concentration gradient of a cardiac toxin, Alpha-cypermethrin, generated according to the invention was used to test the response of HL-1 cardiac cells in the microfluidic device, which correlated with toxicity data obtained from multi-well plates. The invention can be useful for bio-logical and chemical processes that require rapid generation of concentration gradients in a portable microfluidic device.12-08-2011

Thus, the fine actuator follows the lateral shift excursion, while the coarse actuator remains at the midpoint.09-08-2011

20090035797Detection of Disease Associated Proteolysis - Described herein are methods and techniques to study the “degradome”. The degradome of a specific protease is the complete product of the natural substrate repertoire of that enzyme in a cell, tissue or organism. The complete set of proteases that are expressed at a particular moment or circumstance by a cell, tissue or organism produces the collective degradome. Included in the methods described herein are approaches that allow the direct identification and characterization of degradome peptides from approx. 400 to approx. 12,000 Da. The methods of the invention avoid the inherent problems of studying the peptidome by focusing on specific or unique proteolytic cleavages that occur as a result of endogenous protease activity induced by specific diseases. Once characterized, the presence of, or change in level of, specific peptides of the degradome can be used, e.g., to identify specific peptides having elevated levels compared to a reference normal/or to correlate identified peptides with specific proteins and/or to identify protein fragmentation patterns (e.g., peptide ladders) and the specific protease(s) that brought them about and then correlate this information with the presence or absense of a specific disease or condition. Thus, the methods of the invention can be used, for example, to identify new diagnostic markers and/or therapeutic targets, as specific clinical diagnostic methods for individual patients and as methods of monitoring the progress of a therapeutic regimen for the treatment of a patient.02-05-2009
