| 20090035778 | METHODS AND COMPOSITIONS FOR CORRELATING GENETIC MARKERS WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS - The present invention provides, in certain aspects, a method of identifying a subject as having an increased risk of developing multiple sclerosis, comprising detecting in the subject the presence of a nucleotide variant in the interleukin 7 receptor alpha chain gene, whereby the presence of said variant identifies the subject as having an increased risk of developing multiple sclerosis. | 02-05-2009 |
| 20100190264 | Genetic Variants Increase the Risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration - Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in the elderly whose etiology remains largely unknown. Previous studies identified chromosome 1q32 as harboring a susceptibility locus for AMD, but it was not identified. We identified a strongly associated haplotype in two independent data sets. DNA sequencing of the complement factor II gene (CHI) within this haplotype revealed a coding variant, Y402II, that significantly increases the risk for AMD with odds ratios between 2.45 and 5.57. This identifies Complement factor II as involved in pathogenesis of AMD. This single variant alone is so common that it likely explains 43 percent of AMD in older adults. In addition, we have replicated and refined previous reports implicating a coding change in LOC387715 as the second major AMD susceptibility allele. The effect of rs10490924 appears to be completely independent of the Y402II variant in the CFH gene. The joint effect of these two susceptibility genes is consistent with a multiplicative model, and together, they may explain as much as 65% of the PAR of AMD. In contrast, the effect of rs10490924 appears to be strongly modified by cigarette smoking. Smoking and LOC387715 together may explain as much as 34% of AMD. Our data indicate that variant genotypes at rs10490924 confer a substantially larger AMD risk to cigarette smokers than non-smokers. This observation is supported by traditional case-control modeling, by ordered subset linkage analysis (OSA) incorporating pack-years of cigarette smoking as a covariate, and by family-based association analysis using a more homogeneous set of families as defined by OSA. | 07-29-2010 |

| 20110257654 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR FEMORAL RESECTION ALIGNMENT - The apparatus of the present invention includes a number of components including a guide body component, an extension block component, a rotating arm component, an extension rod component, and a tibial referencing component. The guide body component contacts the distal-most surface of the femur. Its location is based off of the posterior femoral condyles and the surface of the distal-most femoral resection or the unresected distal-most femoral surface. The rotating arm component is interconnected with the guide body and may rotate with respect thereto, thus allowing for the direct or indirect adjustment of the rotating alignment of cutting guides for resecting the distal femur. The rotating arm component carries arms with drill screw apertures which direct placement of drill holes in the femur which are used to attach a cutting guide to the femur. The rotating arm component is attached to the extension rod component which extends to the tibial referencing component which references the location and orientation of the proximal resected surface of the tibia. Thus the rotating alignment of the distal femoral prosthesis is established with respect to the orientation of the resected proximal tibial surface. | 10-20-2011 |

| 20100066529 | Highly intelligent vehicle with brake light repeater - An improved brake light warning system is provided that warns the driver of an intelligent vehicle of the need to brake while simultaneously alerting the driver of a following car prior to the driver of the intelligent vehicle stepping on the brakes. A highly intelligent vehicle processor monitors inputs from various sources and compares the reactions of the driver of the highly intelligent vehicle to that of a virtual competent driver in the same context. In response to the presence of an obstacle, the leading car may brake or decelerate. The highly intelligent vehicle detects the response of the leading car via a remote sensing device, determines a context from the physical data, determines what the virtual competent driver would do, determines if the driver should brake, and sends a warning signal to the driver. In one embodiment, a pre-brake signal is also sent to the brake light assembly. The brake light assembly illuminates and is observable by the driver of the following car. Other unsafe conditions are determined in other embodiments. Trip reports regarding unsafe conditions, vehicle context, virtual competent driver actions, recommended driver actions, and warning signals are generated and may be used to improved driver safety. | 03-18-2010 |
