SEGMENTED INSTRUMENT HAVING BRAKING CAPABILITIES - One embodiment of present invention is a segmented instrument having braking capabilities that includes an elongate body having a plurality of links and a hinge connecting a pair of adjacent links in the plurality of links. There is also brake assembly coupled to each link in the pair of adjacent links and positioned to span the distance between the pair of adjacent links. Another embodiment of the present invention is a segmented instrument having a plurality of links and at least one lockable and articulatable joint positioned to connect a pair of adjacent links in the plurality of links. In addition, the at least one lockable and articulatable joint is adapted and configured to increase the number of frictional surfaces available between the pair of adjacent links. There are also provided methods for controlling a segmented instrument. Exemplary steps of the method include introducing a segmented instrument into a patient where the segmented instrument has a plurality of links wherein adjacent links are joined by a hinge. Next, there is the step of manipulating the links about the hinges to maneuver the segmented instrument to provide access to a surgical site within the patient. In one aspect, the manipulating step produces a sliding motion between a plurality of complementary shaped components within a portion of a brake assembly between adjacent links. Next there is the step of actuating the brake assembly to substantially prevent movement about the hinge of the links attached to the braking mechanism. | 12-01-2011

METHOD OF APPLYING FAST MOBILE IPV6 FOR MOBILE NODES IN MOBILE NETWORKS, MOBILE ROUTER THEREFOR, AND MOBILE NETWORK THEREFOR - Provided are a method of applying fast mobile IPv6 (FMIPv6) to a mobile node in order to prevent loss of packets transmitted during a handover of a mobile router from a first access router to a second access router, and a mobile router and a mobile network therefor. Specifically, the mobile router receives, from the first access router, a message containing a prefix corresponding to the second access router, transmits, to the mobile node, a message containing the prefix and information indicating that the prefix is received from the first access router, transmits, to the first access router, a message for FMIPv6, and transmits, to the mobile node, a message to set a zero lifetime for a prefix corresponding to the first access router. Furthermore, the mobile node transmits a message for FMIPv6 to the first access router when the mobile node receives the message containing the prefix. | 06-11-2009

Compositions Containing Antiviral Compounds and Methods of Using the Same - The present invention is directed to compositions and methods for the treatment of various diseases, pathological disorders, and medical conditions such as viral infections and cancer. The compositions include (A) an antiviral compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; and (B) an agent selected from the group consisting of a substituted or unsubstituted imidazole or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; an amino acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; a carboxylic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; a sulfonic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; and a combination thereof. | 10-15-2009
Facile "One Pot' Process for Apomorphine From Codeine - An improved method for producing apomorphine and derivatives thereof is provided. The method is a convenient ‘one-pot’ process, comprising the conversion of codeine into apomorphine without isolating the apocodeine intermediate. Use of water reactive scavengers, reagents that will react irreversibly with water, decreases side product formation and allows the use of milder reaction conditions. This one-pot synthesis of apomorphine from codeine provides a faster reaction with improved yields at temperatures lower as compared to conventional methods. The lower operating temperatures and less volatile reactants make the method particularly useful for large-scale manufacturing. | 08-26-2010
Process for Making Apomorphine and Apocodeine - There is provided an improved and convenient process for the synthesis of aporphines, such as apomorphine and apocodeine, by the rearrangement of the corresponding morphine or codeine derivatives. The use of a suitable water scavenger in an acid catalyzed rearrangement of the morphine derivatives unexpectedly results in a reaction temperature convenient for plant operation without sacrificing product. The method of the present invention also alleviates the cumbersome operations that were employed in the prior art to eliminate water from the reaction mixture at the elevated temperatures. This process is adaptable for the general preparation of other aporphines from the corresponding morphine congeners. | 09-09-2010
Preparation of Saturated Ketone Morphinan Compounds - The present invention provides processes for the preparation of saturated ketone morphinan compounds. In particular, the invention provides processes for the conversion of a morphinan comprising an allyl alcohol ring moiety into a morphinan comprising a saturated ketone ring moiety by an isomerization reaction catalyzed by an inorganic salt of a late transition metal. | 10-14-2010

The needle tip has a distal segment, a proximal segment, and a longitudinal axis. An inner surface of the needle tip defines a passageway spanning at least a portion of the needle tip, and an outer surface of the needle tip defines a wall with the inner surface. The distal segment of the needle tip also includes a wedge surface and a dome-shaped region. The wedge surface forms a wedge angle of other than 90 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis. The dome-shaped region, which intersects the wedge surface, includes at least two bevels that intersect the wedge surface and that intersect each other at one or more points on the needle tip. | 07-02-2009 |
Coronary Venous System Pressure Sensing - Disclose herein is a method of measuring pressures in a coronary sinus. In one embodiment, the method includes: introducing a distal portion of a lead or tool into the coronary sinus, wherein the distal portion includes first and second pressure sensors and at least one selectably expandable member; expanding the at least one expandable member such that the first and second sensors are isolated from each other within the coronary sinus; and taking pressure measurements with the first and second sensors when isolated from each other. | 10-29-2009
