MEMORY MANAGEMENT OF SOFT REFERENCES - A garbage collector determines a target amount of heap space to deallocate, estimates an amount of heap space reachable by a plurality of soft references by determining a cumulative size of no more than an exploration bound N number of objects reachable from each soft reference, and deallocates heap space based on the target amount and the estimate of the heap space reachable from the soft references. Deallocating heap space may include clearing at least one soft reference. If the estimate is inaccurate, it may be utilized regardless or modified to account for inaccuracy. The least-recently-used or the largest soft reference may be cleared until the total cleared space reachable exceeds the target amount. By performing a bounded analysis, the garbage collector may be able to make a more informed decision about whether to clear a soft reference without consuming the full amount of resources consumed by an exhaustive analysis. | 09-09-2010
Type Inference of Partially-Specified Parameterized Types - A compiler receives source code for a program and determines that the code includes a declaration expression and an initialization expression in an assignment context. | 20100004304 | METHODS AND COMPOSITIONS FOR THE TREATMENT OF MALIGNANT MELANOMA, BREAST, PROSTATE, COLON, PAPILLARY THYROID AND PANCREATIC CANCER - It is now recognized that chronic inflammation is an important risk factor for the development of cancer. The proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 is implicated in cancer because it is important for the activation of STAT, a key regulator of cancer growth, survival, metastasis, immune evasion and angiogenesis. Increased IL-6 and Stat-3 exists in vitro in pancreatic cancer, malignant melanoma, papillary thyroid cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer cells with high basal expression of Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) and Wnt5a. IL6/STAT3 activation, mediated by overexpressed TLR3 signaling, appears important in the tumor growth process, it may increase Wnt5a signaling, and be associated with increased cellular growth and migration. Using a novel inhibitor of pathologic TLR3 signaling (5-phenylmethimazole [C10]) we have demonstrated decreases in these markers plus suppression of cell growth and migration in human pancreatic cancer, malignant melanoma, papillary thyroid cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer cells. | 01-07-2010

Optically addressed gray scale electric charge-accumulating spatial light modulator - A technique for modulating light by an optically addressed, electric charge accumulating spatial light modulator achieves substantially monotonic gray scale response. Embodiments digitally modulate the voltage across a photoreceptive material included in the spatial light modulator. The digital modulation scheme entails illuminating the photoreceptor with a series of light pulses propagating from an LCoS, in which the durations of the light pulses and their positions in time combine to produce binary-weighted equivalent rms voltages on the photoreceptor. The light pulses originate from a light-emitting diode or other switchable light source, and the timing of the light pulses is controlled such that they are emitted only when the associated LCoS is in a stable state. Emitting light pulses while the LCoS is in a stable state avoids non-monotonic behavior. | 01-15-2009

Integrated Angle of Arrival Sensing and Duplex Communication with Cats-Eye Multiple Quantum Well Modulating Retroreflector - A modulating retroreflector system includes a modulating retroreflector having a plurality of multiple quantum well modulator pixels and at least one transimpedance amplifier. The transimpedance amplifier receives a photocurrent generated by at least one of the plurality of modulator pixels. Each pixel is capacitively coupled to a current driver, which applies a high frequency digital electrical signal to the pixel when the voltage at the output of the transimpedance amplifier exceeds a threshold value. The modulated output of the retroreflector is reflected toward the source of the received optical beam. The system activates high frequency current drivers for only the illuminated pixels, eliminating the need for a separate angle of incidence sensor and reducing power requirements. A low frequency FSK signal can be superimposed on the DC optical interrogation beam and recovered as the unfiltered output of the transimpedance amplifier, to provide simultaneous bidirectional communication without a half-duplex communication protocol. | 12-01-2011

AUTOMATED CALIBRATION OF POSTURE STATE CLASSIFICATION FOR A MEDICAL DEVICE - Techniques relate to operating a medical device by classifying a detected posture state of a patient. This classification may be performed by comparing the detected posture state of the patient to posture state definitions available within the system. Each definition may be described in terms of a parameter (e.g., vector) indicative of a direction in three-dimensional space. The posture state definitions may be calibrated by automatically estimating values for these parameters, thereby eliminating the need for the patient to assume each posture state during the calibration process to capture actual parameter values. According to another aspect, the estimated parameter values may be updated as the patient assumes various postures during a daily routine. For instance, estimated vectors initially used to calibrate the posture state definitions may be changed over time to more closely represent posture states the patient actually assumes, and to further adapt to changes in a patient's condition. | 07-14-2011
