20080307019Manipulating Electronic Backups - Systems and methods are provided for storing and restoring digital data. In some implementations, a method is provided. The method includes initiating a backup operation of data including a plurality of items, interrupting the backup operation, where interrupting occurs after a portion of the data has been completed, receiving an input to resume the backup operation, identifying a previously completed portion of the backup data, and performing a backup of a remaining uncompleted portion of the backup data. Other embodiments of this aspect include corresponding systems, apparatus, computer program products, and computer readable media.12-11-2008
20090106758File system reliability using journaling on a storage medium - Improving file system reliability in storage mediums after a data corrupting event using file system journaling is described. In one embodiment, a method, which includes scanning beyond an active transactions region within the file system journal to locate additional valid transactions for replay to bring the storage medium into a consistent state; the scanning performed until an invalid transaction is reached.04-23-2009
20090183108METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR MANAGING DATA - Systems and methods for managing data, such as metadata. In one exemplary method, metadata from files created by several different software applications are captured, and the captured metadata is searched. The type of information in metadata for one type of file differs from the type of information in metadata for another type of file. Other methods are described and data processing systems and machine readable media are also described.07-16-2009
20090216776METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR MANAGING DATA - Methods and systems for managing an index database. In one exemplary method, an index database is stored on a machine readable volume with an operating system and the files which have been indexed, and then the volume is, after the storing, made available for distribution to licensees or customers. In this manner, the volume will include a previously created index database, allowing a user to begin use of the index database without having to perform an indexing operation.08-27-2009

20100145949METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR MANAGING DATA - Systems and methods for managing data, such as metadata or indexes of content of files. In one exemplary method, notifications to update a metadata database or an index database are combined into a combined notification. According to other aspects, an order among logical locations on a storage device is determined in order to specify a sequence for scanning for files to be indexed. According to another aspect, a method includes determining whether to index a file based on a path name of the file relative to a plurality of predetermined path names.06-10-2010
20100306187Methods And Systems For Managing Data - Methods and systems for processing data, including metadata and an index database. In one exemplary method, a first folder, representing a first search query, is stored, and a second folder, representing a second search query wherein the second folder has a predetermined hierarchical relationship to the first folder, is stored, and the search queries are used to search one or both of an index database and a metadata database. In the metadata database, the type of metadata for one file type differs from the type of metadata for another file type.12-02-2010

20090089628FILE SYSTEM ERROR DETECTION AND RECOVERY FRAMEWORK - Methods, systems and machine readable media for file system error detection and protection are described. In one aspect, an embodiment of a method includes collecting first data identifying at least one error in performing at least one of reading or writing data to a storage device and determining, through an association between the first data and file identifiers, a set of files which are effected by the at least one error. The collecting may be performed automatically as a background process. In another aspect, an embodiment of a method includes detecting at least one error in file system metadata for a storage device, the detecting being performed automatically as a background process, and storing state information automatically in response to the detecting; the state information indicates that upon next mounting of the storage device, the data processing system will automatically cause the running of a file system check of the file system metadata.04-02-2009

20100049751Methods and Apparatuses for Data Protection - Methods and apparatuses for data protection against corrupted write operations. In one embodiment, a technique of crash protection uses an atomically updated global transaction indicator to switch a set of data structures from one set of versions to another set. In one embodiment, the storage space for multiple versions of a data structure is allocated at the time the data structure is created on the storage device so that the multiple versions of the data structure can be kept close by. Between two consistent points, some data structures are modified to create new versions without changing the corresponding previous versions; and unmodified data structures are not copied. At a consistent point, the global transaction indicator is updated to indicate a set of consistent versions of the data structures, such as metadata of a file system.02-25-2010
