20090077871Process for obtaining low and medium molecular weight Polyphenols and standardized solid fuel from tree wood or bark - A process to obtain low molecular weight polyphenols, medium molecular weight polyphenols, and a standardized solid fuel from tree bark or wood that includes the stages of: bark grinding; solid-liquid extraction from the bark using a low molecular weight aliphatic; concentration of the extract, to recover the aliphatic alcohol used in the extraction; decantation, filtration and/or centrifugation, in order to separate the solid and liquid phases of the extract; drying of the soluble fraction in water of the hydroalcoholic extract; drying of the insoluble fraction in water; separation of the fine fraction of the bark extracted in a sieve and/or air fractionation system. Also revealed are the use of the soluble fraction in water of the hydroalcoholic fraction as a raw material to prepare thermohardening resins, using aldehydes and/or isocianates as cross-linking agents, the use of the insoluble fraction in water of the hydroalcoholic extracts as a raw material for processes of extrusion, injection or another process of transformation, characteristic of the plastics industry, and the use of bark free of extracts, directly as a solid fuel in industrial and/or residential combustion equipment or subjected to a densification process, to produce pellets, briquettes or another solid densified fuel.03-26-2009

20080262533Adaptive Surgical Tourniquet Apparatus and Method - An adaptive surgical tourniquet comprises: an inflatable cuff for encircling a limb of a patient; pressurizing means for pressurizing the cuff; pressure relief means for depressurizing the cuff; cuff pressure sensing means for sensing cuff pressure; limb occlusion pressure sensing means for sensing the patient's initial limb occlusion pressure at a selected time; physiologic characteristic sensing means for sensing a physiologic characteristic of the patient; and pressure regulator means for establishing an adapted limb occlusion pressure that is a predetermined function of the initial limb occlusion pressure and the physiologic characteristic, wherein the pressure regulator means is operable after the initial limb occlusion pressure is sensed for selectably activating the pressurizing means and the pressure relief means to maintain the cuff pressure above the adapted limb occlusion pressure for a time period suitably long for the performance of a surgical procedure.10-23-2008
20090124912Tourniquet Apparatus for Measuring Limb Occlusion Pressure - Improved tourniquet apparatus for measuring a patient's limb occlusion pressure includes an inflatable tourniquet cuff for encircling a limb at a location and to which a tourniquet instrument is releasably connectable. The instrument includes pressure sensing for producing a cuff pressure signal indicative of the level of pressure in the cuff, a pressure regulation mechanism communicating with the cuff and responsive to the cuff pressure signal for moving fluid into and out of the cuff, thereby regulating the pressure in the cuff, a blood flow transducer for producing a blood flow signal indicative of blood flow past the cuff, and limb occlusion pressure means responsive to the blood flow signal and the cuff pressure signal for increasing the cuff pressure level until blood flow indicated by the blood flow signal decreases to a level less than a minimum detection threshold, and then suspending fluid movement into and out of the cuff to produce a limb occlusion pressure value that is indicative of a pressure in the cuff when the fluid motion is suspended.05-14-2009

20110251636Tourniquet Effector - Tourniquet effector system estimates and indicates the pressure gradients produced on the surface of the body by an effector, thereby allowing the pressure gradients to be minimized. The system also detects and monitors blood flow beneath the effector, thereby allowing the pressure applied by the effector to be regulated near the minimum necessary to stop blood flow past the effector.10-13-2011
