20090023186USE OF VALPROIC ACID FOR ENHANCING PRODUCTION OF RECOMBINANT PROTEINS IN MAMMALIAN CELLS - Culturing cells for the commercial production of proteins for diagnosis and therapy is a costly and time consuming process. The equipment required is expensive, and production cost are high. In order to provide commercially viable processes it is desirable to use cell lines which produce large quantities of product with each production run. However, most cells do not produce large quantities of desired product per se either because they do not produce a large quantity of product per unit of time (specific productivity) or because they do not survive long enough in the culture medium (time). Here, we identified that addition of a valproic acid compound to the culture medium increases overall (batch) yield and titer. More importantly, compared to the widely used sodium butyrate, batch yields using a valproic acid compound as a medium additive are significantly higher.01-22-2009

20090125505INFORMATION RETRIEVAL USING CATEGORY AS A CONSIDERATION - Category affinity may be used as a consideration in providing search results. A taxonomy of substantive categories is created and/or obtained. A corpus of document is compared with the taxonomy to determine the category(ies) with which the documents affine. A query is also compared with the taxonomy to determine the category(ies) with which the query affines. A document may receive a category score based on how well the document's category(ies) match the query's category(ies). This document score may be combined with other scores, such as a text score, a link score, and a distance score, and/or any other factors, to determine an overall relevance score. The relevance score may then be used to rank and present search results.05-14-2009

20100060642Techniques For Drawing Curved Edges In Graphs - A system and method for drawing curved edges in graphs is disclosed. The system and method implement a heuristic algorithm to draw curved edges in graphs using Bezier curves. The algorithm assumes that every pair of nodes has a unique edge between them. It also assumes that the graph is “leveled,” which means the nodes can be grouped such that all the nodes in a group are laid out at the same y location in a vertical layout. Any generic graph can be converted to a leveled graph, so the techniques described in the algorithm are applicable to any graph.03-11-2010
20100306167ARTICLE AND METHOD FOR FINDING A COMPACT REPRESENTATION TO VISUALIZE COMPLEX DECISION TREES - The invention comprises an article and method for transforming a complex or large decision tree having multiple variables; multiple values for each variable; and, multiple outcomes for each combination of variables and their associated values, into a compact, efficient graphical representation to provided enhanced ease of use and interaction by a human user. More particularly, the invention comprises a computationally efficient method for transforming an input decision tree into an optimal compact representation by computing a particular ordering of variables in the decision tree that first leads to a Directed Acyclic Graph, or “DAG,” with a minimum number of nodes. The method then converts the DAG into an exception-based DAG, or “EDAG,” with exactly one exception, having an optimal, minimum number of nodes with increased comprehensibility for a user.12-02-2010

20090112117Electrophysiological assessment of the integrity of cerebral vasculature - The present invention discloses a method for monitoring the blood flow in the cerebral vasculature of a subject. The method includes measuring the electrophysiological activity of different regions in the brain in the excited or unexcited state. The measured electrophysiological activity of each region is then compared with the baseline of the electrophysiological activity of that region for the corresponding state. External stimuli or the performance of specific tasks by the subject can be used to excite different regions of the brain. Any deviation in the measured electrophysiological activity from the baseline indicates an altered blood flow in that region of the brain. Identification of this particular region of the brain which has altered activity can be carried out based on the external stimuli that resulted in the altered activity. Specific branches of the cerebral vasculature with an altered blood flow may also be determined based on the regions of the brain showing altered electrophysiological activity.04-30-2009
