FIBEROPTIC PROBE FOR MEASURING TISSUE OXYGENATION AND METHOD FOR USING SAME - Embodiments herein relate to the field of medical monitoring, and, more specifically, to a fiberoptic probe for monitoring tissue oxygenation and a method for using such a probe. A non-invasive method of measuring tissue oxygenation includes, in some embodiments, illuminating a tissue surface with a first fiberoptic fiber, receiving light from the tissue surface with a second fiberoptic fiber, measuring the absorption spectra of oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin in the light, and calculating a tissue oxygenation value based on the absorption spectra. | 03-28-2013

RAPID CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY TO SUPPORT SURGICAL PROCEDURES - One embodiment of techniques for confocal microscopy includes illuminating a spot on a surface of a biological sample. A first emission intensity from the spot is detected in a first range of optical properties; and a second emission intensity in a second range. A pixel that corresponds to the spot is colored using a linear combination of the first and second emission intensities. Sometimes, the pixel is colored to approximate a color produced by histology. In some embodiments, a surface of a sample is contacted with a solution of acridine orange. Then, a spot is illuminated with a laser beam of wavelength about 488 nanometers (nm). Fluorescence emission intensity is detected above about 500 nm. Sometimes, a certain illumination correction is applied. In some embodiments, a sample holder that compresses a sample is removable from a stage that is fixed with respect to a focal plane of the microscope. | 05-19-2011

AUTOMATED DETECTION OF MELANOMA - Embodiments herein exploit the optical sectioning capability of reflectance confocal microscopy to non-invasively survey the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ), noting the irregularities associated with malignancy. Methods are provided to aid a clinician in diagnosing melanoma through pattern recognition to extract pertinent diagnostic information from large 3D confocal images. Identifying the combination of pagetoid melanocytes and DEJ breakdown increases the accuracy of detection. A method may be used to process a 3D confocal volume of images taken by a clinician of a suspicious lesion and deduce the depth location z of the first reflective surface (FRS) at each x-y position. This FRS is where the most superficial melanin resides. In this manner, the stratum corneum and epidermis are digitally stripped and no longer distract the clinician from the more diagnostically relevant pigmented cell network. The FRS is putatively either the DEJ for benign nevi or the depth of a pagetoid melanocyte at x,y above the DEJ. Thus by creating a 3D surface plot of the FRS for each lateral x,y point, the presence of pagetoid cells is identified by a discreet jump in the FRS above the level of the DEJ. The DEJ map may also be used to determine if breakdown of the DEJ is occurring. | 07-05-2012
NONINVASIVE ASSESSMENT OF KERATINOCYTES - Embodiments herein provide methods for noninvasive assessment of keratinocytes. Digital imaging and processing of gray-levels are used to identify cells. More specifically, embodiments provide an automated algorithm that may be used to identify keratinocytes, and/or to specify the coordinates/locations of keratinocytes, through noninvasive confocal imaging. | 08-30-2012

ADJUSTABLE FACE TOOL FOR POSITIONING A FREE MOTION HEADFORM - An adjustable head tool (AHT) is configured for positioning a free motion headform (FMH) having a regulated FMH backoff requirement prior to an impact between the FMH and a target surface having a target point. The AHT has a built-in or a variable backoff angle relative to the position of the target point, and includes a cranial portion and an adjustable facial template. The cranial portion encloses a linkage assembly, and the facial template has one or more facial features. A rotary dial translates the facial template with respect to the cranial portion to maintain the regulated FMH backoff requirement. The cranial portion includes a forehead impact zone having a first set of demarcations, and the rotary dial has a second set of demarcations corresponding to the first set of demarcations. The dial is set so the second set of demarcations matches the first set during positioning of the AHT. | 09-16-2010
PEDESTRIAN IMPACT MITIGATION SYSTEM AND METHOD OF USE - A system for and method of mitigating pedestrian impact utilizing an energy absorption member, such as an expandable honeycomb celled matrix, and at least one tether disposed within a recessed formation defined by the vehicle and interconnected to the member and a drive mechanism, wherein the member is selectively caused to extend and be spaced from an exterior surface. | 07-28-2011

Credit Relationship Management - Systems and methods are disclosed for managing a credit relationship and determining whether to extend credit to a customer. A plurality of user devices may be linked and provided shared access to a customer account over a computer network to assist in streamlining an underwriting decision in a line of business. A customer account may be approved by entering customer data and credit data into a data file, performing a credit decision on the data file, and approving the data file. The approval process may comprise a plurality of modules including a customer module, a credit module, a review module, an exposure module, a relationship module, an approval module, and optionally a tracking module and/or a maintenance module. Further, users or computing devices may be permitted to enter data, alter data, view data, or some combination of viewing, entering, and altering data within one or more of the modules. | 10-30-2008
