20090192084Compositions and method of treating hypoxia-associated diseases - Hypoxia, a state of lower than normal tissue oxygen tension, has recently been implicated in a host of human diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders. Novel associations between p97 and other proteins, including UBX-domain-containing proteins (UBX-polypeptides), HIF1α, and a variety of E3 ligases are provided herein. The disclosure provides complexes comprising UBX-domain-containing polypeptides (UBX-polypeptides) and other polypeptides involved in the degradation of ubiquitinated proteins. In addition, the disclosure provides uses for active agents that modulate protein-protein complex formation between an UBX-polypeptide and its complementary-binding substrate. For example, the disclosure provides methods for treating or preventing hypoxia-related disorders or conditions in a patient or a cell by administration of an active agent that modulates the activity of an UBX-polypeptide and/or its complementary binding-substrate. Furthermore, the disclosure provides uses for active agents that modulate HIF1α activity; such agents may be used to modulate processes that are regulated by HIF1α. The disclosure also provides many screening assays to identify test agents that modulate complex formation between an UBX-polypeptide and its complementary-binding substrate or methods for evaluating modes of action and/or effects of active agents that have already been identified as modulators of an UBX-polypeptide and/or its complementary-binding substrate.07-30-2009

20080284791FORMING COLORING BOOKS FROM DIGITAL IMAGES - Embodiments herein include a method, service, apparatus, etc., that automatically generates a coloring book image that includes line drawings defining a small number of color coherent, clearly discriminated, closed regions while preserving the basic semantic properties of the original image. These regions hence can be filled in with colored inks, crayons, paints, etc. The method inputs a color image that can be a photograph, scanned image, etc. The method begins by transforming the color image into a chrominance-luminance space and then performs low pass filtering on the color image that preserves the chrominance edges of the features within the color image. Next, the method segments the color image into the features based on locations of the chrominance edges of the features. Then, the method can merge selected features into other features. After performing any merging, the method identifies the remaining chrominance edges of the features within the image and adds lines along the remaining chrominance edges to form outlines of the features. Then, the method automatically filters out all other data from the image to leave only the outlines and produce a revised image consisting of just the outlines. The revised image of just outlines is then output to the user.11-20-2008

For each patch, and for at least one object class from a set of object classes, a relevance score for the patch, based on the at least one feature, is computed. For at least some or all of the pixels of the image, a relevance score for the at least one object class based on the patch scores is computed. An object class is assigned to each of the pixels based on the computed relevance score for the at least one object class, allowing the image to be segmented and the segments labeled, based on object class.02-18-2010

For an original image for which a region of interest is desired, the stored information for K similar images is automatically retrieved and used to train a classifier. The trained classifier provides, for each patch of the original image, a probability of being in a region of interest, based extracted features of the patch (represented, for example, as a Fisher vector), which can be used to determine a region of interest in the original image.09-09-2010
20110052063CONSISTENT HIERARCHICAL LABELING OF IMAGE AND IMAGE REGIONS - Classification of image regions comprises: recursively partitioning an image into a tree of image regions having the image as a tree root and at least one image patch in each leaf image region of the tree, the tree having nodes defined by the image regions and edges defined by pairs of nodes connected by edges of the tree; assigning unary classification potentials to nodes of the tree; assigning pairwise classification potentials to edges of the tree; and labeling the image regions of the tree of image regions based on optimizing an objective function comprising an aggregation of the unary classification potentials and the pairwise classification potentials.03-03-2011

20100008935METHOD FOR IDENTIFYING THERAPEUTICAL TARGETS IN TUMORS, THE USE THEREOF AND MEANS FOR DETERMINING AND TARGETING ANGIOGENESIS AND HEMOSTASIS RELATED TO ANDENOCARCINOMAS OF THE LUNG - Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF/SF) are potent mitogens with proven angiogenic activities in human and animal disease models. These growth factors display little overlap in angiogenesis signaling cascades. The application reports angiogenesis in lung adenocarcinomas to be coordinated by hemostatic events. The invention relates to a method for identifying therapeutical targets in tumors, in particular in advanced stage tumor malignancies, the use of novel targets for identifying, determining, and targeting angiogenesis and hemostasis related to adenocarcinomas of the lung, and the use of the therapeutical targets identified for screening and determining means and/or drugs. The aim of the present invention is therefore to make available an easy and efficient method for identifying therapeutical targets in tumors, in particular in advanced stage tumor malignancies. Furthermore the aim is the use of novel therapeutical targets identified by the method for screening and determining beneficial means and/or drugs, and means and drugs for identifying, determining and treating angiogenesis and hemostasis related to adenocarcinomas, in particular of advanced stage tumors of the lung. The method for identifying therapeutical targets in tumors, in particular in advanced stage tumor malignancies, comprising the steps of—isolating RNA (1) from the tissue of the tumor; —determining for the isolated RNA (1) a gene expression profile (2) of at least two genes, wherein at least one gene (3) is coding for a VEGF activity modulator and at least one gene (4) is coding for a hemostatic factor by screening the presence of mRNA coding for the factors to be screened and by determining the levels of expression of thereof; —determining the changes of expression of the at least two genes screened by the gene expression profile (2) in comparison with healthy tissue or with an early stage tumor; and—identifying the therapeutical target as a hemostatic factor, being upregulated or down-regulated.01-14-2010

20110114227GRAIN REFINEMENT OF METALLIC COMPONENTS BY CONTROLLED STRAIN PATH CHANGE - Nowadays, the production of metallic parts, namely sheet metal, with high strength and formability, represents a big challenge for automotive, aerospace and assembling industries. The present invention deals with a new plastic deformation process that allows, by controlling the strain path change, the production of sheet metals with a grain size of 1-2 micron and, consequently, with a yield stress 3-4 times than the ones obtained with conventional processes, keeping the same formability. The process is easy for industrialization and its optimization requires only two fundamental parameters that characterize the ratio of thickness reduction, shear strain and amplitude in the change of strain path.05-19-2011

20100082113TISSUE REPAIR IMPLANT - Described herein are tissue repair implants that include a first or lower layer of peritoneal membrane and a support member. The implants can further include an upper layer of peritoneal membrane, and the support member can reinforce the two layers of peritoneal membrane. For example, the support member can be located between the lower layer of peritoneal membrane and the upper layer of peritoneal membrane. The support member can be encapsulated between the two layers of peritoneal membrane to attach the two layers of peritoneal membrane to the support member. The support member can be made from a non-biological synthetic material mesh with a plurality of openings extending therethrough. Either of the layers of peritoneal membrane and/or the support member may be attached to a wall (e.g., an interior wall) of an abdominal tissue. Either of the layers of peritoneal membrane may be remodelled by in-growth of tissue.04-01-2010
