Hybridisation beacon and method of rapid sequence detection and discrimination - A method for detecting specific DNA sequences and discriminating single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using fluorescently labelled oligonucleotide probes is disclosed. Oligonucleotide probes are labelled with reporter molecules preferentially attached to an internal nucleotide residue. The fluorescence emission of oligonucleotide probes varies significantly when in single-stranded and double-stranded states despite the absence of quencher moieties, allowing reliable detection of complementary DNA targets. The melting temperature of probe/target duplexes permits discrimination of targets that differ by as little as a single nucleotide residue, such that polymorphic targets may be discriminated by fluorescence quantitation and Tm. The hybridisation probes of this invention have been demonstrated to accurately identify homozygous and heterozygous samples using a single fluorescent oligonucleotide and direct investigation of saliva with hybridisation probes permits ultra-rapid genotypic analysis within 35-40 minutes. Target detection and SNP discrimination assays have been achieved in homogeneous, heterogeneous, ‘real-time’ and solid-phase formats. | 12-18-2008

High Efficiency Bicycle Hub - A high efficiency bicycle hub for near frictionless free wheeling comprising a hub having a toothed engagement ring, a driver having a retractable engagement member that can engage and disengage from the hub, and a retraction device to facilitate a disengaged configuration. The retraction device comprises a retaining ring having retraction members and the retractable engagement member comprises reciprocal retraction members to “catch” the retraction member to maintain a disengaged configuration. In use, forward rotation of the driver engages the retractable engagement member with the toothed engagement ring of the hub to drive the hub. Reverse rotation of the driver rotates the reciprocal retraction members underneath or behind the retraction member thereby disengaging the driver from the hub. | 10-07-2010

Free coaster bicycle hub - A free coaster bicycle wheel driving apparatus having a clutch that employs radially acting components. A drive sleeve has an inner cylindrical wall surface mounted coaxially about a wheel mounting shaft and an outer cylindrical wall surface that is eccentric relative to the drive sleeve inner wall surface. The outer surface of the drive sleeve cooperates with a power transmission sleeve that has an inner cylindrical wall surface that is eccentric relative to its cylindrical outer wall surface. The power transmission sleeve is interposed between the drive sleeve and a wheel hub. When the eccentric lobe on the drive sleeve is in opposition to the eccentric lobe on the surrounding power transmission sleeve, the sprocket is disengaged from the wheel hub. Forward rotation of the sprocket jams the lobe of the drive sleeve against the power transmission sleeve, forcing its cam lobe outwardly into frictional engagement with the wheel hub. | 10-30-2008
All-Terrain Board - An all-terrain board has a platform which is supported on two wheel axles connected to the platform by pairs of flexible links. The links in each pair are spaced on either side of a longitudinal axis of the platform. The links are biased so that they have a horizontal dimension when the platform is loaded with a rider. When the rider tilts the platform, this shortens the horizontal dimension on the tilted side, and lengthens it on the other, so that a steering effect is created. The biased links also provide the board's suspension. | 11-20-2008
Bicycle Fork and Steering Tube - A combination bicycle fork and steering tube assembly is formed with a pair of downwardly directed, mutually converging end closure tabs that are bent over into abutment and welded together to define peripherally enclosed fork openings at the ends of the steerer tube. The upper ends of the hollow fork legs are configured to follow the surface contours of the lower end of the steerer tube and are welded to the end closure tabs about the circumferences of the enclosed fork openings at the lower end of the steering tube. The front wheel axle dropouts are formed directly in the lower ends of the fork legs, which include internal dropout support inserts. The dropout support inserts are sandwiched in between a pair of flat, mutually parallel dropout tabs defined directly in the lower ends of the fork legs. | 09-24-2009
Bicycle Crank Assembly - A bicycle sprocket crank assembly is comprised of first and second crank arms joined to a spindle. One of the crank arms and the spindle may be fabricated as a unitary structure, or both cranks arms may be formed as separate structures and joined together. In either case the spindle has at least a first coupling end with an internally tapped axial bore defined therein and the second crank arm forms at least a first socket at its axle end. At least a first wedging sleeve is provided and is disposed about the first coupling end of the spindle. The first wedging sleeve conforms to the shapes of both the first coupling end of the spindle and the hollow cavity in the first socket. Either the coupling end of the spindle or the hollow cavity is axially tapered, and the wedging sleeve is tapered to match so that as the first socket is drawn onto the first coupling end of the spindle, the wedging sleeve is increasingly forced in between the inner radial surface of the hollow cavity of the socket and the outer radial surface of the coupling end of the spindle. The wedging sleeves may be interconnected by flexible, elastic straps to allow each individual shim to move independently of the other. | 03-18-2010

Bicycle pedal - A bicycle pedal apparatus is provided formed from two identical halves comprising a plurality of holes. A bolt secures the two halves through the holes and projects out beyond the surface of the pedal, thereby performing a dual role of securing the two halves together and serving as a traction mechanism. The pedal bodies rotate about a pedal axle either directly on the axle or on bearings. In embodiments utilizing bearings, two different bearings are used, roller bearings to bear the rotational load and thrust bearings to bear any axial load. The pedal axle can be tapered with a flanged head and resides in a cavity in the pedal body that substantially conforms to the shape of the pedal axle so as to minimize movement of the pedal axle within the pedal body. | 03-26-2009

Method of Configuring a Mobile Telephone to Interact with External Services - A mobile telephone can be configured to interact with external services by using a client application on the telephone that interacts with several external services via an intermediary server. The server sends, to the mobile telephone, configuration information to enable or disable defined sets of functionality in the application, the configuration information depending on and appropriate to the particular external service selected on the mobile telephone and being sent automatically to the mobile telephone over-the-air. An implementation of the invention enables a single client application on the mobile telephone to automatically configure features on/off, and modify the terminology used in resources (such as menus, text strings, bitmap images, sounds, sonic effects etc.) depending on the external system or service that the client is connected to via the intermediary server. | 09-03-2009
Method of Enabling a User to Interact with Content Received from a Remote Server - A user interacts with content received from a remote server; content (e.g. feeds from social networking sites, advertisements) is received over a wireless network at a mobile telephone, which then automatically displays a specific item of the content on the mobile telephone, without the user explicitly requesting the display of that specific item of content. In response to the user selecting or highlighting the displayed specific item of content, the mobile telephone lists multiple options that, if individually selected, each initiate an associated action that corresponds to a particular way of responding to or interacting with the specific item of content. | 04-15-2010

ENGINE BRAKING METHOD AND SYSTEM - During engine braking of a turbocharged internal combustion engine, the exhaust gas pressure increases and this is used to pressurise the seals between the turbocharger shaft and the bearing housing so as to prevent oil leakage into the compressor housing. Immediately after engine braking, stored exhaust gas pressure is used to pressurise the seals at the turbine end so as to prevent oil leakage into the turbine housing. In an alternative arrangement the exhaust gas is used to generate a reduced pressure in the bearing housing to increase the pressure gradient across the seals. | 02-18-2010
