20090176054Insulative Material And Associated Method Of Forming Same - An insulative material and a method of forming the insulative material are provided. The insulative material is configured to change shape in response to temperature and thus, for example, the insulative material may become more insulative as the temperature decreases. For example, the insulative material may include a plurality of fibers that change shape, such as by curling, in response to decreases in temperature, thereby correspondingly changing the insulative properties.07-09-2009
20100283637Cloud Image Replacement for Terrain Display - A method and apparatus for displaying an image of terrain obtained from a position above the terrain. An image of an object is detected in the image of the terrain for an object that is positioned between the terrain and the position above the terrain. The detected image of the object is replaced in the image of the terrain with replacement image data. For example, the replacement image data may be image data for the terrain below the object. The image of the terrain with the replacement image data may be displayed. The method and apparatus may be used to replace images of clouds in images of the surface of the earth below an aircraft with image data for the surface of the earth below the clouds.11-11-2010
20110128625Low Power Retro-Reflective Communications System and Method - Presented is a low-power retro-reflective communication system that reflects modulated light back in substantially the same direction as the light source using a retro-reflector. The light modulator in the retro-reflector modulates the light in response to a stimulus, such as an electrical communications stimulus or an environmental stimulus. In embodiments, the retro-reflector is a corner-cube retro-reflector and the modulator is one of the reflecting surfaces, or a spherical retro-reflector and the light modulator is a variably reflecting backing.06-02-2011

20090312899MONITORING VEHICLE AND EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS AT AN AIRPORT - A sensor network for monitoring vehicle operations comprises a set of wireless gateways, a plurality of wireless sensors, a plurality of wireless routers, and data processing system. The set of wireless gateways is capable of receiving emissions data from the sensor network. The plurality of wireless sensor units has sensors capable of monitoring vehicle emissions and is capable of generating the emissions data in response to monitoring the vehicle emissions. The plurality of wireless routers is capable of receiving emissions data received from the plurality of wireless sensor units and routing the emissions data received from the plurality of sensors to the set of wireless gateways. The data processing system is capable of receiving the operations data from the set of wireless gateways and capable of processing the operations data. The operations data may include data related to emissions from the vehicle or equipment.12-17-2009
20090314069METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ESTIMATING ENGINE POWER - A method is present for estimating engine load factor. Temperature data is obtained from a temperature sensor in a location with respect to an exhaust system for an engine. A rate of temperature change is estimated using the temperature data. A steady state temperature at a selected time is calculated for the location using the temperature data and the rate of temperature change. The engine load factor at the selected time is estimated from the steady state temperature.12-24-2009

20080276651Increasing the cladding-to-core ratio (D/d) of low D/d ratio core rods in optical fiber performs - An optical fiber preform is fabricated by inserting a number of core body pieces end-to-end inside a glass cylinder, wherein the pieces may have a cladding-to-core diameter (D/d) ratio within the range of one to four. The cylinder with the inserted core body pieces is mounted vertically on a furnace and heated so that the cylinder becomes elongated and its outside diameter collapses to form a core rod from which core rod sections with D/d ratios greater than five, can be cut. A soot overcladding is deposited on the circumference of a core rod section until the diameter of the deposited soot builds to a determined value. The core rod section with the deposited soot overcladding is consolidated to obtain a finished optical fiber preform. The preform preferably has a D/d ratio of about 15 or more, and an optical fiber may be drawn directly from the preform.11-13-2008
