Remote redundant voice server system - During normal operation, a user terminal supported by an IP-PBX server establishes a call by resolving the name of the IP-PBX server using a DNS server. When the DNS server provides the address of the IP-PBX server, the IP-PBX server can be contacted. However, if the SIP controller learns that the IP-PBX is no longer operating, the information stored by the service provider environment may be used to build or configure an IP-Centrex server at a remote site which takes over for the failing IP-PBX server. The newly configured IP-Centrex server then registers itself with the SIP controller and either the SIP controller or the IP-Centrex server then informs the DNS server of the IP address of the IP-Centrex and tells the DNS server that the IP-Centrex server will respond to messages for the failed IP-PBX server. The newly configured IP-Centrex server then handles the messages and control flow previously handled by the IP-PBX server. When the IP-PBX server is repaired or replaced, the IP-PBX server informs the SIP controller that it is back online and either the SIP controller or the IP-PBX server then informs the DNS server that the IP-PBX server will again be handling the call requests for the IP-PBX server. | 10-30-2008
SINGLE NUMBER SERVICES FOR FIXED MOBILE TELEPHONY DEVICES - A special-purpose Service Control Point includes a customized application that provides Fixed Mobile Convergence services and interoperates with a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network to achieve a single-number fixed mobile convergence overlay network. By determining if a dual-mode cellular/WiFi handset is reachable via a WiFi network, the Service Control Point may redirect incoming and outgoing calls off of the cellular network and onto the WiFi network, thereby reducing cost and providing greater coverage. | 05-21-2009

PROVIDING REAL-TIME VOICE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DEVICES CONNECTED TO AN INTERNET PROTOCOL NETWORK AND DEVICES CONNECTED TO A PUBLIC SWITCHED TELEPHONE NETWORK - Systems, methods, and apparatus for providing real-time voice communication between devices connected to an Internet Protocol (IP) network and devices connected to a public switched telephone network (PSTN). In one implementation, the system includes a computer-controlled switch for connection to a local PSTN, for receiving calls from the IP network and the PSTN, and for routing calls to the PSTN and the IP network; and gate interface circuitry connected to the switch and adapted for connection to the IP network. The gate interface circuitry includes gateway circuitry for interfacing the IP network and PSTN voice circuits, and gatekeeper circuitry for performing address translation, admission control, bandwidth management, and zone management. The switch stores at least one PSTN destination address and at least one IP network destination address for each subscriber. The switch routes an incoming call to any one of the destination addresses stored for the subscriber. | 05-10-2012

CUSTOMIZABLE METADATA AND CONTEXTUAL SYNDICATION OF DIGITAL PROGRAM MATERIAL - A system and method for providing video and/or audio on-on demand service to owners of video and/or audio program rights for offering digital versions of those programs to web site visitors. The method or system is an Application Service Provider (ASP) model, whereby the services are provided to the video and/or audio owners over the World Wide Web and where no specifics software need reside with the video and/or audio owners. Video and/or audio programs from the owners, once converted to an appropriate digital form, are streamed over the Internet or other IP networks for viewing in real-time direct from a remote device having video and/or audio servers that store the digital programs by viewers who have purchased the right to view them. Customizable metadata is utilized to thematically and contextually identify the digital file. This metadata is searchable by a person seeking digital files for download. E-commerce transaction processing is provided on behalf of the video and/or audio owner, and revenue is appropriately conveyed to the owner and/or the web site. | 10-15-2009

Method for Measuring Signal Quality in WDM Optical Networks - A method and memory medium in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network that communicates multiplexed signals representing a plurality of communication channels to determine received signal quality are disclosed. Generally, the signals format the plurality of communication channels to impart a distinctive noise profile in time or frequency for each channel; and collectively process the channels at a digital signal processing device to measure the signal-to-noise ratio. | 05-12-2011

Optical devices with multiple wafers containing planar optical wavequides - A method for fabricating an optical device wherein the device comprises a first substrate wafer with at least one buried optical waveguide on an approximately flat planar surface of the substrate and a second substrate wafer with at least a second buried optical waveguide. The waveguides so formed may be straight or curved along the surface of the wafer or curved by burying the waveguide at varying depth along its length. The second wafer is turned (flipped) and bonded to the first wafer in such a manner that the waveguides, for example, may form an optical coupler or may cross over one another and be in proximate relationship along a region of each. As a result, three-dimensional optical devices are formed avoiding the convention techniques of layering on a single substrate wafer. | 04-09-2009
Digital Light Path Labeling System with Dual Polarization Quaternary Phase-shift Keying Modulation - A method and system for encoding and determining labels in a Dual Polarization (DP) Quaternary Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) signal is provided. A label frame, signature sequence, and data payload are combined using a complementary constant-weight code encoding (CCWC) encoder, the output of which is deinterleaved and differentially precoded to generate a polarized tributary of a DP-QPSK signal. This encoding can be duplicated for a second tributary of the DP-QPSK signal. The label can be determined using one or more polarizers and corresponding low-speed photodetectors, each applied to a copy of the DP-QPSK signal. The strongest output of the photodetectors is then used to determine the label. Alternatively, the DP-QPSK signal can be viewed as having XI, XQ, PH, and PV tributaries. These tributaries can then be translated into XI, XQ, YI, and YQ tributaries are encoded into a standard DP-QPSK signal. | 01-19-2012
