Wheelchair attachments - Attachments for a manual wheelchair are provided for navigating a wheelchair over obstacles and uneven terrain, such as a typical curb on a street. The attachments provide for regulating the movement of the wheelchair as the wheelchair descends the curb and to prevent the wheelchair from flipping over during such movement. The attachments include a front caster wheel slider assembly on each side of the wheelchair, a follower wheel assembly and a track belt damping bar. The front caster wheel slider assembly includes a piston that will quickly push the front caster wheels down after they roll over the top edge of the curb. The follower wheel assembly acts as a sensor that will release the piston in the assembly after the front caster wheels roll over the top edge of the curb. As the back wheels of the wheelchair roll over and down the curb, the track belt damping bar slows the descent of the wheelchair | 10-14-2010

HIGH INTENSITY LASER POWER BEAMING RECEIVER FOR SPACE AND TERRESTRIAL APPLICATIONS - Systems and methods are described that facilitate refueling a vehicle with electrical energy by targeting receiver thereon and pointing a high-intensity laser source at the receiver. Vertical multi-junction (VMJ) photocells receive the laser energy and convert the laser energy into electrical energy. The laser source can operate at a range of output power levels depending on the vehicle's energy needs. The laser source can be pulsed or continuous near-infrared laser source. A heat exchanger can be coupled to the receiver to dissipate laser energy not converted into electrical energy. If the vehicle has a propeller, the heat exchanger can be mounted to the vehicle in the propeller wash path. | 10-09-2008
LASER GENERATED SYNTHETIC MEGA SCALE APERTURE FOR SOLAR ENERGY CONCENTRATION AND HARNESSING - Systems and methods are described that employ high-intensity lasers to set up a thin plasma sheet, also called a waveguide or “hot shell”, in the atmosphere as a function of beam intensity and geometry. A laser beam can be spread and directed with physical optics (e.g., lenses, mirrors, other optical elements, etc.) to generate a thin inverted cone-shaped hot shell waveguide in the atmosphere. The hot shell of the waveguide has a different index of refraction (n) from that of the surrounding air layers and as such serves to internally reflect portions of the entering solar rays entering an aperture in the hot shell, toward the tip of the cone and a solar energy storage component positioned there, thus providing a virtual solar energy concentration system. In another embodiment, the solar energy storage component shuts down or otherwise rejects incoming solar energy when fully charged, to mitigate damage to system components. | 07-02-2009

Method of predicting and communicating the performance of an installed building component based on the transient hygrothermal behavior of the component - A method of predicting and communicating transient hygrothermal behavior of an installed building component in a building wherein an interior environment of the building is materially affected by an environment exterior of the building, includes: defining a performance characteristic of the building component that is affected by transient hygrothermal behavior of the building component; defining exterior and interior climatic factors that affect the defined performance characteristic wherein the interior climatic factors are a function of the exterior climatic factors; and defining one or more non-climatic factors that affect the defined performance characteristic. Inputting these factors into a transient hygrothermal simulation software program to create a software model for performing simulations which predict changes in the defined performance characteristic, as a function of time, that are compared with a threshold performance characteristic value, to provide a user guide. | 10-02-2008
Method of winding sheets with preapplied seam tape - Provided is a method of rolling a single-ply membrane sheet having seam tape applied along one edge. | 20120068439 | Fast Hook-Up Hitch - A hitch attached to a tow vehicle includes a plate slideably engaged within a plate receiver and having a ball mounted thereon. To attach the tow vehicle to a trailer, the tow vehicle is positioned such that the plate having the ball mounted thereto is placed in the vicinity of a ball receiver attached to the trailer. The plate is then repositioned manually until the ball is positioned directly under the ball receiver and the ball receiver is lowered onto the ball. After attachment of the ball to the ball receiver, the tow vehicle reverses causing the plate to advance into the plate receiver until a retainer pin locks the plate to the plate receiver thereby preventing the plate from moving relative to the plate receiver. | 03-22-2012

Compositions And Methods For Engineered Human Arginine Deiminases - The present invention discloses the engineering of a human enzyme with arginine hydrolytic activity suitable for human therapy. An enzyme comprising of a human sequence is not likely to induce adverse immunological responses and thus is expected to constitute a superior therapeutic. Since the human genome does not encode arginases with the proper high affinity catalytic properties (i.e., for example, a low Km and high catalytic activity, kcat) an appropriate arginase can be engineered by modifying an enzyme with related catalytic activity. For example, the human enzyme PAD4 can hydrolyze arginine in peptide substrates but does not have activity for free arginine. First, a high throughput assay was developed for detecting arginine activity by monitoring the formation of the hydrolytic product citrulline. Then, using a combination of rational design and iterative mutation and screening PAD4 mutants were identified and isolated exhibiting high affinity free arginine metabolic activity. These mutants did not retain activity for their original substrate, peptidyl arginine. | 09-24-2009
