20080265828VARIABLE FREQUENCY REDUCED SPEED VARIATION ELECTRIC DRIVE - A multiple-winding induction machine may be used to obtain a reduced-speed-variation electric drive when using a variable-frequency power distribution system. Each winding may have a different number of poles. The winding with the smallest number of poles may operate the machine at the lowest bus frequency, while the winding with the largest number of poles may operate the machine at the highest bus frequency. In one embodiment, a third winding, with a middle number of poles, may operate the machine at the middle frequency ranges. The speed of the induction machine is a function of the electrical frequency and the number of the winding poles. Therefore, the operating speed range can be reduced by switching from one winding to another. According to the present invention, windings with different numbers of poles can be designed to achieve different reductions in speed variation.10-30-2008
20080290843WIDE SPEED RANGE ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION SYSTEM USING HIGH REACTANCE PERMANENT MAGNET MACHINE - A device and method for controlling the output of a wide speed range high reactance permanent magnet machine based PGS is provided. The windings of a permanent magnet machine are coupled to a three-phase diode bridge. A transistor is used for temporarily short-circuiting said diode bridge. A capacitor smoothes the voltage at a voltage detection point. A control unit generates a signal that switches the transistor in response to a voltage detected at the voltage detection point. The control unit signal modifies the duty cycle of the switching of the transistor in response to variations in the speed of the power generator to maintain a desired voltage at the voltage detection point.11-27-2008
20090079399OVERLOAD CONTROL OF AN ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION SYSTEM - A control system for an electrical power generation system (EPGS) provides overload protection without disconnecting a generator of the EPGS from an excessive electrical load. Available engine power and current levels of the electrical load are continuously measured. A command voltage is calculated that corresponds to a voltage required to sustain with the maximum available power. Output voltage of a generator of the EPGS is controlled at the calculated command voltage so that a power limit of the engine is not exceeded during electrical overload conditions.03-26-2009
20090201648CONTOUR SURFACE COOLING OF ELECTRONICS DEVICES - The present invention provides a cooling device including a heat generating device having a device surface with a device surface contour on at least a portion of the device surface and a base having a base surface with a base surface contour on at least a portion of the base surface. The device surface contour and the base surface contour are substantially similar such that at least a portion of the device surface and the base surface fit in close proximity to each other.08-13-2009
20090290270OVERLOAD CONTROL OF AN ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION SYSTEM WITH UNKNOWN AVAILABILITY OF MECHANICAL POWER CAPACITY - A control system for an electrical power generation system (EPGS) provides overload protection without disconnecting a generator of the EPGS from an excessive electrical load. Available engine power and current levels of the electrical load are continuously measured and computed. A command voltage is calculated in real time that corresponds to a voltage required to sustain with the maximum available power. Output voltage of a generator of the EPGS is controlled at the calculated command voltage so that a power limit of the engine is not exceeded during electrical overload conditions.11-26-2009
20090290392ACTIVE EMI FILTERING USING MAGNETIC COUPLING CANCELLATION - An active electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering may reduce the requirements for high current differential mode inductors. The active EMI filtering of the present invention may be useful in power devices that use switching power converters. Conventional EMI differential mode filtering devices may occupy up to 30% of the total weight and volume of the power electronics. Conventional differential mode filtering inductors tend to be large and heavy, especially so for high current input power lines. The present invention may replace the large conventional differential mode filtering inductors with a smaller set of coupled inductors.11-26-2009
20090295314METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR IMPROVING ELECTRICAL LOAD REGENERATION MANAGEMENT OF AN AIRCRAFT - Regenerated power from actuation loads of an aircraft may be returned to the distribution bus of the aircraft. In the past, actuators were either hydrostatic or pneumatic. With the furtherance of more electric architecture (MEA) aircraft, there has been an increase in electrical actuation modes. The power or current exchange between electrical buses and the electromechanical and electro-hydrostatic flight control actuators is bidirectional, resulting in a need to accommodate regenerative power. Conventional methods may use shunt regulation to dissipate regenerated power. These methods require additional cooling to reject the heat generated. This regenerated power is wasted as dissipated heat. The present invention, on the other hand, may dump the regenerated power back to a power sink, such as into ancillary electrical loads or to the starter/generator as mechanical (kinetic) energy. In the present invention, the energy may not be wasted nor may it generate excessive heat that needs to be dissipated.12-03-2009
20100066165METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR IMPROVING PEAK POWER CAPABILITY OF AN AIRCRAFT - A method and system for improving peak power capability in an electrical system is disclosed. The system may include an auxiliary generator operated in conjunction with one or more main engine generators during the need for increased transient load demands. The system may include a main engine generator, an auxiliary generator, an inverter/converter controller (ICC) connected to respective generators, a semi-conductor power device connected between the ICCs, and a main bus between the semi-conductor power device and a load.03-18-2010
20100232076METHOD FOR MITIGATING NEGATIVE SEQUENCE EFFECT RESULTING FROM NON-SYMMETRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT FAILURE OF SYNCHRONOUS ELECTRIC MACHINE BASED SYSTEMS - A drive system for a multi-phase electric machine with a permanent magnet rotor, the drive system may comprise conduction paths for each phase. Detectors on each of the conduction paths may determine electrical condition of the conduction path. At least one selectable interconnection path may be present between all of the conduction paths. The at least one selectable interconnection path may be operable to connect all of the conduction paths together responsively to one or more of the detectors determining that the electrical condition of its respective electrical path is representative of a predetermined electrical fault condition so that heating of the rotor during continued rotation of the rotor is prevented.09-16-2010
20110057441OVERLOAD CONTROL OF AN ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION SYSTEM - A control system for an electrical power generation system (EPGS) provides overload protection without disconnecting a generator of the EPGS from an excessive electrical load. Available engine power and current levels of the electrical load are continuously measured. Output voltage of a generator of the EPGS is controlled at the calculated command voltage so that a power limit of the engine is not exceeded during electrical overload conditions.03-10-2011
20110060473METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR LEAD-UNITY-LAG ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION SYSTEM - A method employing a lead-unity-lag adjustment on a power generation system is disclosed. The method may include calculating a unity power factor point and adjusting system parameters to shift a power factor angle to substantially match an operating power angle creating a new unity power factor point. The method may then define operation parameters for a high reactance permanent magnet machine based on the adjusted power level.03-10-2011
20110103113COMPOSITE AC TO DC POWER CONVERTER - A 24-pulse composite AC-to-DC converter is a converter using two or more conversion methods in parallel. The converter may include a main rectifier receiving at least a portion of an input AC signal, an autotransformer having an output voltage with lower amplitude than the input AC signal, and a plurality of auxiliary bridge rectifiers, each receiving the output from each leg of the autotransformer. In one embodiment of the invention, the main rectifier may receive a substantial portion of the load current, allowing each of the auxiliary bridge rectifiers to be generally smaller than the main rectifier.05-05-2011
