In addition, isoxazoles and sulfonyl hydrazones are identified as general classes of compounds that can induce differentiation of stem cells into cells of neuronal and cardiac fate, respectively. | 03-19-2009 |
MICRO-RNAs THAT MODULATE SMOOTH MUSCLE PROLIFERATION AND DIFFERENTIATION AND USES THEREOF - The present invention relates to the identification of microRNAs that regulate smooth muscle cell proliferation and differentiation, including the miR-143/miR-145 cluster. Methods of treating restenosis and neointima formation by increasing expression of miR-143 and/or miR-145 are disclosed. The present invention also relates to the identification of two microRNAs, miR-486 and miR-422a, that regulate cell survival in the heart. Methods of treating or preventing cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, or myocardial infarction by increasing expression of miR-486 and/or miR-422a in heart tissue are also disclosed. | 09-10-2009
IDENTIFICATION OF MICRO-RNAS INVOLVED IN NEUROMUSCULAR SYNAPSE MAINTENANCE AND REGENERATION - The present invention relates to the identification of miRNAs that are involved in the process of neuromuscular synaptic maintenance and regeneration following injury or disease. Modulation of these miRNAs is proposed as treatment for spinal cord injury and neurodegenerative disease. | 10-01-2009
MICRO-RNAS THAT CONTROL MYOSIN EXPRESSION AND MYOFIBER IDENTITY - The present invention relates to the identification of two microRNAs, miR-499 and miR-208b, that repress fast skeletal muscle contractile protein genes. Expression of miR-499 and/or miR-208b can be used to repress fast fiber genes and activate slow fiber genes in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Inhibition of miR-499 and/or miR-208b is proposed as a treatment for cardiac hypertrophy, myocardial infarction, and/or heart failure. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising antagonists and agonists of miR-499 and miR-208b function are also disclosed. | 10-21-2010
A MICRO-RNA FAMILY THAT MODULATES FIBROSIS AND USES THEREOF - The present invention relates to the identification of a microRNA family, designated miR-29a-c, that is a key regulator of fibrosis in cardiac tissue. The inventors show that members of the miR-29 family are down-regulated in the heart tissue in response to stress, and are up-regulated in heart tissue of mice that are resistant to both stress and fibrosis. Also provided are methods of modulating expression and activity of the miR-29 family of miRNAs as a treatment for fibrotic disease, including cardiac hypertrophy, skeletal muscle fibrosis other fibrosis related diseases and collagen loss-related disease. | 11-11-2010
MICRO-RNAS OF THE MIR-15 FAMILY MODULATE CARDIOMYOCYTE SURVIVAL AND CARDIAC REPAIR - A family of microRNAs, called the miR-15 family, which includes miR-195, are shown to be up-regulated during pathological cardiac remodeling and repress the expression of mRNAs required for cell proliferation and survival, with consequent loss of cardiomyocytes. Strategies to block expression of the miR-15 family in the heart as a treatment for diverse cardiac disease are provided. | 12-16-2010

REUSABLE SAMPLE HOLDING DEVICE PERMITTING READY LOADING OF VERY SMALL WET SAMPLES - A reusable sample-holding device for readily loading very small wet samples for observation of the samples by microscopic equipment, in particular in a vacuum environment. Embodiments may be used with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), an X-ray microscope, optical microscope, and the like. For observation of the sample, embodiments provide a thin-membrane window etched in the center of each of two silicon wafers abutting to contain the sample in a small uniform gap formed between the windows. This gap may be adjusted by employing spacers. Alternatively, the thickness of a film established by the fluid in which the sample is incorporated determines the gap without need of a spacer. To optimize resolution each window may have a thickness on the order of 50 nm and the gap may be on the order of 50 nm. | 08-05-2010

RADIO FREQUENCY ABLATION SERVO CATHETER AND METHOD - A system that interfaces with a workstation endocardial mapping system allows for the rapid and successful ablation of cardiac tissue. The system allows a physician to see a representation of the physical location of a catheter in a representation of an anatomic model of the patient's heart. The workstation is the primary interface with the physician. A servo catheter having pull wires and pull rings for guidance and a servo catheter control system are interfaced with the workstation. Servo catheter control software may run on the workstation. The servo catheter is coupled to an RF generator. The physician locates a site for ablation therapy and confirms the location of the catheter. Once the catheter is located at the desired ablation site, the physician activates the RF generator to deliver the therapy. | 04-15-2010

Traction apparatus and methods - A brace and traction device and associated methods of operation. In one embodiment, the device incorporates a forwardly open head and jaw brace which is adjustably supported vertically above a forwardly collar member. The brace and the collar member are adapted such that the brace is able to mate with the collar member while still being able to rotate to the subject's left and right while remaining planar to the collar member. Adjustment may be accomplished for example manually or via an electronic motor controlled by a control mechanism and microprocessor. The microprocessor may be adapted to store information regarding a user's sessions, and facilitate communication with patient and physician personal devices, thus sending these data from recorded sessions. The processor element may also be adapted to implement therapy sessions based on physician-entered program specifications, or based on pre-programmed specifications. | 08-06-2009

Roof-top fire prevention sprinkler system with storage rack - A roof-top fire prevention sprinkler system, with or without an optional, separate storage rack, is comprised of a rotating sprinkler head mounted on a support frame of conduit having fluid communication between a water source and the sprinkler head. The frame, having a more or less rectangular shape bent in the middle of the long sides, saddles the peak of a roof to be protected. At the bend in the frame, at the roof peak, a cross piece of conduit bisects the long sides of the rectangle, and is in fluid communication therewith. The sprinkler head is connected to the middle of the cross piece. Water can be supplied through a garden hose connected to a pipe extension of stiff conduit which is in turn connected to one of the short sides of the rectangle. The pipe extension can act as a pole to place or retrieve the support frame at or from the roof peak without the user having to climb onto the roof. Cylindrical pliant rollers surrounding the short sides of the rectangle allow the frame to glide easily up a sloping side of a pitched roof. The optional storage rack can hold the sprinkler and frame, disconnected from the pipe extension, on end against a wall, taking up little space when not in use. | 11-27-2008
