Conjungation of Small Molecules to Octaarginine Transporters for Overcoming Multi-Drug Resistance - Many cancer therapeutic agents elicit resistance that renders them ineffective and often produces cross resistance to other drugs. One of the most common mechanisms of resistance involves P-glycoprotein (Pgp) mediated drug efflux. Here we provide compositions and methods that restore the efficacy of a therapeutic agent reduced by resistance by conjugation of the same agent to an oligoarginine transporter comprising from about 5 to about 25 guanidino or amidino moieties. We specifically show that the widely used chemotherapeutic agent taxol, ineffective against taxol-resistant human ovarian cancer cell lines, can be incorporated into an octaarginine conjugate that is effective against the same taxol-resistant cell lines. Significantly, the ability of the taxol conjugates to overcome taxol resistance is observed both in cell culture and in animal models of ovarian cancer. The generality and mechanistic basis for this effect were also explored with other Pgp substrate. This approach shows generality for overcoming the multidrug resistance elicited by small molecule cancer chemotherapeutics and could improve the prognosis for many cancer patients and fundamentally alter search strategies for novel therapeutic agents effective against resistant disease. | 06-30-2011

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR IMAGE DISPLAY CONTROL ACCORDING TO VIEWER FACTORS AND RESPONSES - A device and system and a method for selecting and displaying images in accordance with attention responses of an image viewer. An image capture device captures a viewer image of a spatial region potentially containing a viewer of the image display device and a viewer detection mechanism analyzes the viewer image and determines whether a potential viewer is observing the display screen. A gaze pattern_analysis mechanism identifies a viewer response to a currently displayed image by analysis of the viewer's emotional response as revealed by the viewer's facial expression and other sensory inputs, and the selection of an image to be displayed is then modified in accordance with the indicated viewer's attention response. | 12-30-2010

COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR TRANSPORT OF MOLECULES WITH ENHANCED RELEASE PROPERTIES ACROSS BIOLOGICAL BARRIERS - Conjugates of a cargo molecule with a transporter molecule are disclosed, where the cargo molecule and the transporter molecule are linked covalently by a releasable linker. The cargo of the conjugate can be a biologically active agent or a reporter molecule. The transporter modulates the transport of the cargo across a biological barrier (e.g., a cell membrane) compared to the transport of the unconjugated cargo. Releasable linkers suitable for rapid and facile conjugation to various types of cargo and transporters are also disclosed, along with methods for using the linkers in the synthesis of conjugates. | 10-07-2010

Modified Influenza Virus For Monitoring And Improving Vaccine Efficiency - The immunogenicity of the influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) molecule may be increased by substitutions of amino acids in the HA sequence. The substitution of specific HA residues, such as asparagine at position 223 of H5 HA, increase the sensitivity of the hemagglutinin inhibition (HI) assay by altering receptor specificity and/or antibody-antigen binding. HA molecules containing such substitutions will be useful in the development of diagnostic reference viruses and improved influenza vaccines. | 05-05-2011

METHOD FOR DESIGNING THE LAYOUT OF TURBINES IN A WINDFARM - A method and system for designing a layout of turbines on a grid is provided. The method comprises receiving wind data for each possible location of placement of a turbine on said grid; calculating an energy yield for a given layout of turbines on said grid as a nonlinear objective function, said function constrained by said wind data; implementing a bounding heuristic, said bounding heuristic comparing said calculated energy yield for said given layout of turbines to a current lower bound, and if said calculated energy yield is greater than the current lower bound, replacing the current lower bound with the calculated energy yield; and repeating the above steps for different layouts of turbines on the grid. | 08-25-2011
