MULTI-TARGETING SHORT INTERFERING RNAs - The present invention relates to novel short interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules that are multi-targeted. More specifically, the present invention relates to siRNA molecules that target two or more sequences. In one embodiment, multi-targeting siRNA molecules are designed to incorporate features of siRNA molecules and features of micro-RNA (miRNA) molecules. In another embodiment, multi-targeting siRNA molecules are designed so that each strand is directed to separate targets. | 10-02-2008

Robust Information Extraction from Utterances - The performance of traditional speech recognition systems (as applied to information extraction or translation) decreases significantly with, larger domain size, scarce training data as well as under noisy environmental conditions. This invention mitigates these problems through the introduction of a novel predictive feature extraction method which combines linguistic and statistical information for representation of information embedded in a noisy source language. The predictive features are combined with text classifiers to map the noisy text to one of the semantically or functionally similar groups. The features used by the classifier can be syntactic, semantic, and statistical. | 07-02-2009
Methods for Using Manual Phrase Alignment Data to Generate Translation Models for Statistical Machine Translation - The present invention adopts the fundamental architecture of a statistical machine translation system which utilizes statistical models learned from the training data and does not require expert knowledge for rule-based machine translation systems. Out of the training parallel data, a certain amount of sentence pairs are selected for manual alignment. These sentences are aligned at the phrase level instead of at the word level. Depending on the size of the training data, the optimal amount for manual alignment may vary. The alignment is done using an alignment tool with a graphical user interface which is convenient and intuitive to the users. Manually aligned data are then utilized to improve the automatic word alignment component. Model combination methods are also introduced to improve the accuracy and the coverage of statistical models for the task of statistical machine translation. | 07-09-2009
Mobile Speech-to-Speech Interpretation System - Interpretation from a first language to a second language via one or more communication devices is performed through a communication network (e.g. phone network or the internet) using a server for performing recognition and interpretation tasks, comprising the steps of: receiving an input speech utterance in a first language on a first mobile communication device; conditioning said input speech utterance; first transmitting said conditioned input speech utterance to a server; recognizing said first transmitted speech utterance to generate one or more recognition results; interpreting said recognition results to generate one or more interpretation results in an interlingua; mapping the interlingua to a second language in a first selected format; second transmitting said interpretation results in the first selected format to a second mobile communication device; and presenting said interpretation results in a second selected format on said second communication device. | 07-09-2009

Systems and methods for securitizing longevity risk - A system for structuring credit support in connection with life insurance premium finance loans and securitizing longevity risk includes a trust having a life insurance policy and a premium finance loan from a lender that finances the cost of the premiums of the life insurance policy. The life insurance policy is used as collateral for the premium finance loan. The trust provides to the lender additional collateral in the form of a letter of credit or other forms of collateral to cover any shortfall between the balance and the policy cash surrender value. A longevity risk fund provides the credit support by entering into a collateral support agreement with the trust through a credit source. The longevity risk fund receives compensation in the form of risk adjusted return on exposure, in exchange for providing the additional collateral. The cash flows received from the credit support obligations are then securitized through the transfer of the related collateral support agreements (either by legal transfer or economic participation) to a special purpose vehicle that issues securities (either equity or debt) to the capital markets. | 04-30-2009

Apparatus and Method of Reinforcing a Conduit or Vessel - A web for reinforcing the wall of a vessel or conduit, and methods of installation therein, is disclosed. The vessel or conduit is any structure that has a concave or arched inner surface. The web is comprised of an elongated composite laminate that has a fabric layer with a plurality of fibers embedded into a cured resin matrix. When cured on a curing surface, the composite laminate retains an elastic memory of the curing surface such that the composite laminate is substantially self-supporting against the inside surface of the wall due to its elastic memory. In use, a tack coat of epoxy with viscosities ranging from low to high, or gel epoxy, is applied to at least a portion of the bottom side of the laminate, which is then applied to the inside surface of the wall so as to reinforce the wall. Multiple such composites may be applied to the wall in turn in a ring pattern or in a spiral pattern, overlapping at least one recently applied composite to form a water-tight seal within the conduit and to reinforce the conduit. | 12-24-2009
REPAIR AND STRENGTHENING OF SMALL DIAMETER PIPES WITH FRP LAMINATES - A method is disclosed for repairing or strengthening a damaged portion of a pipe. A patch of required dimensions is prepared from a composite laminate having a fabric layer with a plurality of fibers embedded into a cured resin. The pipe is then prepared to receive the patch and the epoxy resin is applied to an outside surface of the patch. The patch is then coiled and secured around a mandrel and transported thereby to the damaged portion of the pipe through an open end thereof, such that during transport through the pipe the patch does not contact the inside surface of the pipe. A bladder inside the coiled patch is pressurized to force the unrolling of the patch to contact the inside surface of the patch. The pressure is maintained against the patch until the epoxy resin is substantially cured, whereupon the bladder is deflated and removed with the mandrel from the pipe. A method of repairing such a pipe while fluid flows therethrough, and a method of repairing a corrugated steel pipe, is also disclosed. | 04-01-2010

STRUCTURE REINFORCEMENT WRAP - A method and an article of manufacture are disclosed for reinforcing various structures, such as pipes, ducts, vessels, tanks, silos, chimneys, and the like, constructed from various materials including steel, concrete, masonry, wood, plastics, and the like. Some of the various structures may be used to transport water, gas, oil, and the like. Multiple layers of various material sheets, each sheet having substantially the same or different properties, may be wrapped around or be attached to the inside of a structure to be reinforced. The multiple layers together constitute a structure reinforcement wrap (SRW) and in an embodiment it may include a honeycomb layer surrounded by other reinforcement layers to reinforce the structure against external and internal loads, such as weight, impact load, blast load, internal pressure, ballistic load, and the like. | 08-25-2011
