System and Method for Controlling Nanoparticles Using Dielectrophoretic Forces - The present invention is directed to the use of dielectrophoretic forces for the arbitrary manipulation of micrometer- and nanometer-sized particles and to devices capable of arbitrarily manipulating micrometer- and nanometer-sized particles by means of dielectrophoretic forces within a two- or three-dimensional region. The devices and methods of the invention are capable of arbitrarily controlling the velocities, locations, and forces applied to a particle, arbitrarily specifying a force or set of forces at a location in space, and determining friction and/or drag coefficients of a particle, and are thus well-suited for a range of applications including cell sorting, drug delivery, as a diagnostic tool for determining membrane stiffness, and in the heterogeneous integration of micro- and nano-components through directed assembly. | 11-27-2008
FAR-FIELD SUB-DIFFRACTION OPTICAL LENSES (FASDOL) - Far-field sub-diffraction optical lenses “FaSDOLs” comprise an anisotropic crystal having special dispersion characteristics such that it supports diffraction free propagation. An image with subwavelength features on the input surface is transferred through a propagation function to the output surface with effectively no, or minimal, loss in information. These special properties may be exploited in several ways, including but not limited to, magnification of an image at the input surface through the use an oblique cut at the output surface, magnification of an image at the input surface through use of a curved crystalline structure, and more generally near-field optical processing. | 12-10-2009

Beverage Container Cooling Device - A beverage container cooling device for rapidly cooling beverage cans or bottles and their contents includes a plurality of turntables provided with stepped diameter expansible collets formed from an elastomeric material for frictional engagement with beverage containers of diverse different sizes, including soda cans and bottles. Bearing assemblies mount the turntables for rotation in a container adapted for containment of a cooling medium such as an ice and water mixture. A gear mechanism in conjunction with either an electric motor or a hand crank functions to rotate the turntables and the beverage containers mounted thereon within the cooling medium in the container for rapidly cooling the beverage containers and their contents. | 01-13-2011

Furniture slide - A furniture slide for placement between an object to be moved and flooring over which the object is to be moved. The slide member has top and bottom faces wherein the bottom face is provided with a smooth surface for sliding on a carpeted floor. A block of compressible material is provided with a top surface for supportive contact with an object or furniture to be moved, and the block is configured and dimensioned for a bottom surface thereof to be removably supported on the top face of the slide member. The bottom face of this compressible block is comprised of a fabric material for sliding engagement on a hard floor surface. | 02-02-2012

Coatings for Spacers in Emission Displays - A resistive spacer coating for a carbon nanotube (CNT)/field emission device (FED) display is described. The resistive spacer coating reduces electrostatic charging of the spacer during operation of the display while maintaining the field potential between the cathode and the phosphor screen. The resistive coating includes one or more resistive materials which are combined with binders that are then applied to the spacer. | 10-08-2009

Compact Spectrometer Including a Diffractive Optical Element with Dual Dispersion and Focusing Functionality - Embodiments of the invention provide a device called a “G-Fresnel” device that performs the functions of both a linear grating and a Fresnel lens. We have fabricated the G-Fresnel device by using PDMS based soft lithography. Three-dimensional surface profilometry has been performed to examine the device quality. We have also conducted optical characterizations to confirm its dual focusing and dispersing properties. The G-Fresnel device can be useful for the development of miniature optical spectrometers as well as emerging optofluidic applications. Embodiments of compact spectrometers using diffractive optical elements are also provided. Theoretical simulation shows that a spectral resolution of approximately 1 nm can be potentially achieved with a millimeter-sized G-Fresnel. A proof-of-concept G-Fresnel-based spectrometer with subnanometer spectral resolution is experimentally demonstrated. | 02-16-2012

ELIMINATION OF REDUNDANT OBJECTS IN STORAGE SYSTEMS - Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture, wherein a data structure corresponding to a set of client nodes selected from a plurality of client nodes is generated. Objects from the selected set of client nodes are stored in the data structure. A determination is made that an object corresponding to a client node of the selected set of client nodes has to be stored. An additional determination is made as to whether the object has already been stored in the data structure by any client node of the selected set of client nodes. The object is stored in the data structure, in response to determining that the object has not already been stored in the data structure by any client node of the selected set of client nodes. | 10-02-2008
