20090243762WAVEGUIDE FILTER - A waveguide bandpass filter for use in microwave and millimeter-wave satellite communications equipment is presented. The filter is based on a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) having several cascaded oversized SIW cavities. The filter is implemented in a printed circuit board (PCB) or a ceramic substrate using arrays of standard metalized via holes to define the perimeters of the SIW cavities. Transmission lines of a microstrip line, a stripline or coplanar waveguide are used as input and output feeds. The transmission lines have coupling slots for improved stopband performance. The filter can be easily integrated with planar circuits for microwave and millimeter wave applications.10-01-2009

20110186260Thixotropic Injector with Improved Annular Trap - By blocking an angular extent of an annular skimming trap used for semi-solid injection, a notable reduction in lenticular defects and porosity are observed. The blocking can be performed by a ring having dimensions to completely occlude a prior art annular skimming trap throughout the angular extent, and providing complete and/or partial flow across the ring throughout the rest of the angular extent. Preferably an outlet to the ring trap includes a chamfered edge and/or a deflector for encouraging flow of the contaminated semi-solid material into the trap.08-04-2011

20090162196Device for use in detecting dangerous materials or illegal substances in shipping containers - A portable device for use in detecting dangerous materials and illegal substances in shipping containers with the aid of a trained dog. The device is used by a dog handler and constructed to be able to withdraw air from within a shipping container, through a high air vent in it's sidewall, and present the withdrawn air to the dog to smell. The dog is beside the handler on the ground beside the container when smelling the withdrawn air.06-25-2009

20100051875Production and conditioning of synthesis gas obtained from biomass - A method of producing and treating synthesis gas in which a biomass-rich material is gasified in a gasifier containing a fluidized bed at a temperature that does not exceed 750° C. to produce a crude synthesis gas product. The crude synthesis gas then is quenched, scrubbed, and then subjected to at least one adsorption step to provide a clean synthesis gas. The clean synthesis gas then may be reformed catalytically to provide a synthesis gas with a desired H03-04-2010

20110298696DISPLAYS WITH UNIFORM BACKLIGHT COLORS - Displays may include backlight structures. The displays may be liquid crystal displays for electronic devices such as computer monitors and computers. The backlight structures may include light-emitting diodes and a light-guide panel that has opposing first and second edges. The light-emitting diodes may inject light into the first edge of the light-guide panel. An edge reflector may be disposed along the second edge. The edge reflector may reflect more yellow light than blue light to enhance backlight color uniformity within the display. The edge reflector may be formed from a substrate that is impregnated with a colored substance or a multilayer structure. Light diffusing and light diffracting or refracting structures may be used to disrupt light emitted from a light-emitting diode before injecting the emitted light into a light-guide panel. Light-disrupting structures and blue-absorbing edge reflectors may be used together to promote backlight color uniformity in the backlight structures.12-08-2011

20100277410LED SELECTION FOR WHITE POINT CONTROL IN BACKLIGHTS - Systems, methods, and devices are provided for maintaining a target white point on a light emitting diode (LED) based backlight. In one embodiment, the backlight may include two or more groups of LEDs, each driven at a respective driving strength. Each group may include LEDs of a different chromaticity, and the respective driving strengths may be adjusted, for example, by varying the duty cycles, to maintain the target white point. To ensure that the white point may be maintained over an operational temperature range of the backlight, the LEDs may be selected so that the chromaticities of each group of LEDs are separated by at least a minimum chromaticity difference. Further, the LEDs may be selected so that at the equilibrium temperature of the backlight, the LEDs may produce the target white point when driven at substantially equal driving strengths.11-04-2010

20100128744SPECTRALLY TAILORED PULSED FIBER LASER OSCILLATOR - High power optical pulses generating methods and laser oscillators are provided. A light generating module generates seed optical pulses having predetermined optical characteristics. A spectrum tailoring module is then used to tailor the spectral profile of the optical pulses. The spectral tailoring module includes a phase modulator which imposes a time-dependent phase variation on the optical pulses. The activation of the phase modulator is synchronized with the passage of the optical pulse therethough, thereby efficiently reducing the RF power necessary to operate the device.05-27-2010
20110170163SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR THE SPATIAL TAILORING OF LASER LIGHT USING TEMPORAL PHASE MODULATION - Laser systems and methods for providing an output light beam having a target spatial pattern are provided. A light generating module generates an input light beam, whose spectral profile is then tailored by imposing thereon a controllable phase modulation. The obtained spectrally tailored light beam is dispersed, using at least one spatially-dispersive element to provide an output light beam having a spatial profile which is a function of the spectral profile of the spectrally tailored light beam, The phase modulation is selected in view of the spectral profile of the input light beam and of the dispersion characteristics of the at least one spatially-dispersive element so that the spatial pattern of the output light beam matches the target spatial pattern therefor.07-14-2011
