20090115099Process for making a monofilament-like product - The invention relates to a process for making a monofilament-like product from a precursor containing a multitude of continuous polyolefin filaments, comprising exposing the precursor to a temperature within the melting point range of the polyolefin for a time sufficient to at least partly fuse adjacent fibres and simultaneously stretching the precursor at a draw ratio of at least 2.8. With the process according to the invention a monofilament-like product can be made that shows improved tensile properties; making it very suitable for application as e.g. fishing line.05-07-2009

20100077718CHAIN COMPRISING A PLURALITY OF INTERCONNECTED LINKS - The invention relates to a chain suitable to moor or anchor boats, to lash cargo in road, rail, water and air transportation or for conveying, hoisting, suspending or lifting applications, said chain comprising a plurality of interconnected links. More in particular the invention relates to a chain suitable for the above stated uses comprising a plurality of interconnected links, at least part of the links comprising polyolefin fibers and in particular ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers. The invention also relates to a method for enhancing the strength of such a chain.04-01-2010

20090012251Process for making a monofilament-like product - The invention relates to a process for making a monofilament-like product from a precursor containing at least one strand of fibres made from ultra-high molar mass polyethylene, comprising a) exposing the precursor to a temperature within the melting point range of the polyethylene for a time sufficient to at least partly fuse adjacent fibres and b) simultaneously stretching the precursor, wherein the precursor is mechanically compressed during fusing. The monofilament-like product thus made has a smoother surface appearance, and improved abrasion resistance, for example a reduced tendency to pilling during use as fishing line, than known similar products; making it very suitable for use as fishing line and the like. The invention further relates to a monofilament-like product obtainable by said process, and to semi-finished and end-use products comprising said monofilament-like product.01-08-2009
20090306709SURGICAL REPAIR PRODUCT COMPRISING UHMWPE FILAMENTS - The invention relates to an elongate surgical repair product comprising a cable of which bending stiffness can be lowered, which fibrous member is a heat-set cable comprising at least 50 mass % of high-performance polyethylene yarn. The product shows very high tenacity, combined with a relatively high initial bending stiffness that is significantly reduced upon bending or flexing the member, without significant dimensional change; and allows both easy and well-controlled handling and good knot tying characteristics. The invention also relates to a method of making said clongate product.12-10-2009

20090076019METHODS FOR TREATING NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS OR DAMAGE - A clonogenic neurosphere assay is described that carries out high throughput screens (HTS) to identify potent and/or selective modulators of proliferation, differentiation and/or renewal of neural precursor cells, neural progenitor cells and/or self-renewing and multipotent neural stem cells (NSCs). Compositions comprising the identified modulators and methods of using the modulators and compositions, in particular to treat neurological disorders (e.g. brain or CNS cancer) or damage are also disclosed.03-19-2009
20100287638NEURAL TUMOR STEM CELLS AND METHODS OF USE THEREOF - The present invention relates to the discovery that renewable stem cell lines can be derived from tumor cells and can be cultured in vitro. Accordingly, the invention provides neural tumor stem cell lines and cells from such cell lines. Because the cell lines retain characteristics of the tumors from which they are derived, the cells can be used in screening methods for identification of potential therapeutic agents and can be used to identify genetic markers which may be predictive for development of such tumors. Finally, such cells can be used to determine an appropriate therapeutic regimen for a patient suffering from a brain tumor. Cells from a patient's brain tumor can be cultured as described herein to create a cell line, and the relative effectiveness of a therapeutic agent against the cells can be tested to determine which agent or combination of agents is most effective in treating the patient's tumor.11-11-2010
