In an embodiment, the composition comprises a human- or animal-derived extracellular matrix having impregnated therein a macromolecular network of hyaluronan macromolecules that have been cross-linked via dihydroxyphenyl linkages, so that the cross-linked network is interlocked within the extracellular matrix.
