Sensing systems utilizing acoustic wave devices - A sensing system includes an acoustic wave device comprising a body of piezoelectric material, and a first electrode assembly mounted on the piezoelectric body whereby an appropriate input applied to the electrode assembly produces an acoustic wave in the piezoelectric body and a first frequency response. The acoustic wave device also has a second electrode assembly to produce a second frequency response, the second electrode assembly being in contact with an area sensitive to a supplied stimulus to cause a characteristic of the sensitive area to change when a supplied stimulus is sensed to thereby change the second frequency response. The acoustic wave device has an output connected to the input of an amplifier, the amplifier having an output connected to the input of a coupling device. The coupling device is connected to the input of the acoustic wave device and has an output connected to a detector. The acoustic wave device, the amplifier and the coupling device are configured to be in an “off” condition when no supplied stimulus is sensed by the sensitive area of the acoustic wave device and to be in an “on” condition when a supplied stimulus is sensed by the sensitive area. The coupling device is configured to send a change signal to the detector when a change from the “off” condition to the “on” condition occurs. | 12-25-2008
Acoustic wave sensor assembly utilizing a multi-element structure - An acoustic wave sensor assembly includes piezoelectric material, a first acoustic wave resonator element structure mounted on the piezoelectric material for interacting with an electrical signal, the acoustic wave resonator element structure being operable to interact with an acoustic wave propagating within the piezoelectric material to produce a first frequency response. Further acoustic wave resonator element structures are mounted on the piezoelectric material for interacting with electrical signals, the further acoustic wave resonator element structures being operable to interact with further acoustic waves propagating within the piezoelectric material to produce subsequent frequency responses. The first acoustic wave resonator element structure and further acoustic wave resonator element structures are combined to form a ladder or lattice filter network to produce an overall frequency response. Sensitive areas are mounted on the piezoelectric material and associated with the acoustic wave resonator element structures which, if predetermined effects to be sensed or detected are present, are modified thereby to control the nature of the frequency responses with resultant specific perturbations of the combined frequency response and thereby provide information with respect to the predetermined effects to be sensed or detected. | 01-08-2009

MEDICAL IMPLANT WITH REINFORCEMENT MECHANISM - An improved medical implant for treating mitral regurgitation is provided. The medical implant comprises proximal and distal anchors connected by a bridge. The medical implant is configured to be delivered into a coronary sinus using a minimially invasive procedure. The bridge is preferably made of a shape memory material which is biased to contract after the implant is delivered. The medical implant further comprises a reinforcement mechanism configured to limit stresses and strains along the length of the bridge. In a preferred embodiment, the reinforcement mechanism is fixed to a plurality of attachment points along the bridge, thereby preventing excessive elongation between any two attachment points. A resorbable material is preferably disposed within gaps along the length of the bridge to temporarily maintain the bridge in an elongated condition. After the proximal and distal anchors are secured in the coronary sinus, the resorbable material gradually resorbs, thereby creating tension in the bridge which applies a force along the mitral valve annulus. The reinforcement mechanism ensures that stresses and strains and distributed evenly while the bridge is in tension. | 09-11-2008

MICROFLUIDIC INTERFACE - The invention allows for the formation of robust, reproducible, non-permanent connections to microchips. The connections are formed using either indexing arms or multiple fitting holder heads which are capable of forming a compression seal to a port located at any position on the surface of the microchip. The sealing force is user-defined and can be tightly controlled with integrated force sensors. In addition, the sealing force is monitored with a force sensor and force compensation mechanism ensuring that the desired force is maintained. The device is compatible with all microchip architectures. Alterations to the microchip surface is avoided as connections are established using instrumentation rather than processing steps. Further, the process is automatable allowing for exchanging microchips and subsequently creating electrical and fluidic connections in an automated fashion. Optionally, the integration of leak sensors to monitor leaks are included. | 03-03-2011

Retail produce box and method for selling a variety of produce therein - There is provided an improved retail produce box, preferably for fresh potatoes. Each box comprises a bottom wall, four side walls with beveled corners where adjacent side walls meet, said bottom wall and side walls defining a substantially rectangular box interior. That interior is covered by a lid made from folded over extensions of two opposed side walls with one of said lid extensions at least partially overlapping the other lid extension to minimize light penetration into the box interior and allow for some settlement of contents after filling. The bottom wall may have a plurality of apertures for visual inspection of the contents and facilitating air circulation within. Preferably, the overlapping lid extension includes a hinged and tabbed section that can be flipped open for visually inspecting the box contents and lowered back down after. A plurality of such boxes, in various produce quantities, may be boxed together for shipping in a master container. A method for selling varying produce in the same box entails inserting a divider into that box to form chambers into which different varieties of potatoes, or potatoes along with other produce like onions, may be packaged. | 04-08-2010
