20080223727 | Continuous Co-Current Electrochemical Reduction of Carbon Dioxide - In various embodiments, the invention provides electro-chemical processes for reduction of carbon dioxide, for example converting carbon dioxide to formate salts or formic acid. In selected embodiments, operation of a continuous reactor with a three dimensional cathode and a two-phase (gas/liquid) catholyte flow provides advantageous conditions for electro-reduction of carbon dioxide. In these embodiments, the continuous two-phase flow of catholyte solvent and carbon dioxide containing gas, in selected gas/liquid phase volume flow ratios, provides dynamic conditions that favour the electro-reduction of COs at relatively high effective superficial current densities and gas space velocities, with relatively low reactor (cell) voltages (<10 Volts). The distributor is electronically conductive and the reactant fluid which flows through the distributor has fuel and oxidant each in separate fluid phases, wherein at least one of the fuel and oxidant fluid phases is a liquid. The capillary pressure at the anode is selected to produce a higher hold up of the fuel fluid phase than the oxidant fluid phase in the pores of the anode when the mixed reactant fluid flows through the distributor thereby suppressing transfer of oxidant to the anode from the distributor, or the capillary pressure at the cathode is selected to produce a higher hold up of the oxidant fluid phase than the fuel fluid phase in the pores of the cathode when the mixed reactant fluid flows through the distributor, thereby suppressing transfer of fuel to the cathode from the distributor; or both. The distributor extends between respective superficial electrode surfaces of the anode and cathode such that the bulk mixed reactant fluid flows through the distributor and by the superficial electrode surfaces under conditions that produce a positive net potential of the fuel cell under load. | 07-14-2011 |

20100320159 | METHOD AND DEVICE FOR CLEANING NON-FIXED MEDIA FILTERS - A method and apparatuses are presented for rejuvenating a bed of granular filter medium that has accumulated contaminants during filtration of a liquid stream. The method first includes the step of establishing a small volumetric flow rate of clean filtrate in reverse flow. Then, the filter media is agitated to break-up contaminants that have become agglomerated on the surface of or within the interstitial spaces of the filter media. The agitating step is accomplished by exposing the liquid-full filter media to a jetting stream comprised mostly of a gas mixed with a clean liquid. The jetting stream is dispersed throughout the filter media through a plurality of radial nozzles located within the filter bed. The radial nozzles disperse the gas within the liquid and filter media causing sufficient turbulence and agitation of the filter media granules to liberate the trapped contaminants without the need for high liquid flow rates. The number of nozzles and their placement within the filter bed are varied depending on factors such as size and shape of the filter vessel and the type of filter media being cleaned. The amount of water and gas flowing through the nozzles is also adjusted to provide substantially uniform cleaning of the entire bed. This method results in lower volumes of clean filtrate being consumed in the backwash cycle and the associated storage and recycle of that liquid back into the process. The radial nozzles are each comprised of two horizontal and parallel circular disks spaced apart to create a cylindrical void through which the pressurized gas and liquid jetting stream flows. The apparatuses presented are a singular filter vessel an a plurality of filter chambers within a common filter vessel each containing granular filter media and a plurality of radial nozzles disposed with the media for dispersing the jetting stream throughout during the cleaning and rejuvenation steps of a filtering process. | 12-23-2010 |

20100146599 | CLIENT-BASED GUEST VLAN - A network device connected to a network includes a physical port and multiple logical ports configured to provide guest access or authenticated access to the network via the physical port, to a supplicant device. An authorization engine determines whether the supplicant device is authorized to access the network. An authentication engine determines whether the supplicant device is compatible with an authentication protocol associated with the network based on a receipt or a non-receipt of a response from the supplicant device to one or more authentication requests. A guest table stores the source address of the supplicant device if the supplicant device is authorized to access the network and is incompatible with the authentication protocol, wherein the logical ports are configured to provide the guest access to the supplicant device corresponding to the source address stored in the guest table. | 06-10-2010 |

20080310950 | Flow cavity arrangement - It is known with regard to particularly cavities below high pressure turbine discs that mixing of hot gas leakage flows through an inner seal with cooling flows can diminish the effectiveness of that cooling flow when presented to other parts for cooling. By providing a path within a wall which is particularly shaped in portions it is possible to provide entrainment of a hot leakage gas flow away from entry into the cavity. Thus, the cooling flow retains a higher cooling effect and maintains its swirling nature in comparison with prior arrangements where mixing with the hot leakage flow occurred. | 12-18-2008 |
20090129916 | TURBINE APPARATUS - A gas turbine engine comprising a rotor and a stator which define first, second and third cavities; the rotor and stator define a seal therebetween and which is located for sealing between the second and third cavities, the rotor comprises an aperture through which a gas flow passes from the first cavity to the second cavity characterized in that the seal comprises a deflector that extends axially over at least a portion of the aperture to deflect at least a part of the gas towards the rotor. | 05-21-2009 |

20110193293 | SEAL ARRANGEMENT - A seal arrangement provided between a static component and a rotating component arranged for rotation about a rotational axis. The arrangement preferably takes the form of an interstage seal for a gas turbine engine, including: first and second seal members carried by respective said components and arranged concentrically about said rotational axis. The first seal member has a plurality of radially directed seal fins extending towards the second member and a substantially radially directed flow outlet configured to direct a flow of cooling air through the first member. In one aspect of the invention, the second member has a radial projection at one end of its axial length, the projection extending towards the first member at a position spaced axially between the flow outlet and said seal fins. In another aspect of the invention, the flow outlet is axially adjacent a seal fin which is configured so as to be generally concave towards the flow outlet. | 08-11-2011 |
20150047359 | AXIAL FLOW MACHINE COOLING SYSTEM - This invention concerns a system for cooling components in a gas turbine engine, the gas turbine engine including a compressor for driving a primary gas flow to a combustor and a turbine arranged to be driven by combustion gases from the combustor, wherein the system includes: an annular cooling flow passage arranged for fluid communication between the compressor and the turbine, the flow passage having a first inlet arranged to receive gas from the primary gas flow downstream of compressor, and a second inlet located upstream of the first inlet, wherein the annular cooling flow passage has at least one internal wall for guiding airflow from the first inlet towards the airflow from the second inlet, the airflow from the first and second inlets coalesce within the annular flow passage prior to passing along the passage in a direction from the compressor to the turbine. | 02-19-2015 |
