20090312820ENHANCED SIGNAL PROCESSING FOR COCHLEAR IMPLANTS - The restoration of melody perception is a key remaining challenge in cochlear implants. A novel sound coding strategy is proposed that converts an input audio signal into time-varying electrically stimulating pulse trains. A sound is first split into several frequency sub-bands with a fixed filter bank or a dynamic filter bank tracking harmonics in sounds. Each sub-band signal is coherently downward shifted to a low-frequency base band. These resulting coherent envelope signals have Hermitian symmetric frequency spectrums and are thus real-valued. A peak detector or high-rate sampler of half-wave rectified coherent envelope signals in each sub-band further converts the coherent envelopes into rate-varying, interleaved pulse trains. Acoustic simulations of cochlear implants using this new technique with normal hearing listeners, showed significant improvement in melody recognition over the most common conventional stimulation approach used in cochlear implants.12-17-2009

20090048828GAP INTERPOLATION IN ACOUSTIC SIGNALS USING COHERENT DEMODULATION - Information is estimated to fill-in even relatively long gaps (e.g., up to 250 ms) that occur in a signal due to physical errors in media or transmission, where the omitted information causes signal distortion. The signal is first divided into a plurality of subbands, since the gaps in each subband are individually easier to interpolate. Coherent demodulation is then employed on each subband signal to reduce the time-varying signals to a collection of pairs of frequency-modulated carriers multiplied by complex-valued envelopes, or modulators. Standard interpolation is then separately applied to the modulators and carriers of these pairs to fill-in the gaps in each of the subbands, and the interpolated pairs are remodulated. The resulting interpolated signals from each of the subbands are recombined to form the final interpolated output signal in which the gaps are filled in with estimated data.02-19-2009
20090083031CLIPPED-WAVEFORM REPAIR IN ACOUSTIC SIGNALS USING GENERALIZED LINEAR PREDICTION - A method and system for optimally repairing a clipped audio signal. Clipping occurs when a waveform exceeds a dynamic range of a recording device. Portions of an audio signal exceeding the dynamic range or saturation level of the recording device are clipped, causing distortion when the clipped recorded signal is played. To address this problem, successive frames of the clipped audio data are repaired to fill in gaps where the data were clipped. For each frame, an iterative process repetitively estimates an auto-covariance and detects clipped samples in the frame or a sub-frame in order to compute a least-squares solution for the frame that interpolates the clipped data. The process can cause inverted peaks in the repaired data, which must then be rectified to produced corrected repaired data. The corrected repaired data for the successive frames are recombined using interpolation, to produce a complete repaired audio data set.03-26-2009

20100070042Implantable Joint Prosthesis - The invention relates to a surgical implant that provides an artificial diarthroidal-like joint, suitable for use in replacing any joint, but particularly suitable for use as an intervertebral disc endoprosthesis. The invention contains two rigid opposing shells, each having an outer surface adapted to engage the surfaces of the bones of a joint in such a way that the shells are immobilized by friction between their outer surfaces and the surfaces of the bone. These outer surfaces are sufficiently rough that large frictional forces strongly resist any slippage between the outer surface and the bone surfaces in the joint. They may be convex, and when inserted into a milled concavity, are immediately mechanically stable. Desirably, the outer surfaces of the shells are adapted to allow for bony ingrowth, which further stabilizes the shells in place. The inner surfaces of the shells are relatively smooth, and adapted to slide easily across a portion of the outer surface of a central body disposed between the shells. The central body has a shape that cooperates with the shape of the inner surface of the shell so as to provide a range of motion similar to that provided by a healthy joint. A flexible sheath extends between edges of the opposing shells. The inner surface of this sheath, together with the inner surfaces of the rigid shells, defines a cavity encasing the central body. At least a portion of this cavity is filled with a fluid lubricant, further decreasing the frictional force between inner surfaces of the shell and the surface of the central body.03-18-2010

20100073160ALERTING USERS USING A MULTIPLE STATE STATUS ICON - A user alert system is described that provides multiple dimensions of information to a user through a status icon. Initially the status icon displays a neutral state that informs the user that the user alert system is running, but there are currently no relevant alerts for the user to view. When the user alert system receives a lower priority alert, the system determines if the number of lower priority alerts received exceeds a threshold. If the number of lower priority alerts exceeds the threshold, then the user alert system modifies the status icon to display a low alert state. When the user alert system receives a higher priority alert, the system modifies the status icon to display a high alert state. Thus, the user alert system displays both the existence of alerts and the priority of the alerts to the user at the same time.03-25-2010

20080235962Archery bow sight - An optical bow sight which can be accessorized with an adjustable range sighting pin or torque and cant compensation or both of these features, but is fully functional without either accessory. The optical sight has a shrouded array of fiber optics sight pins which are removable from the sight housing with their support as a single unit. The sight pins are clad in a metallic glass because of the corrosion resistance of such materials. Light collected over a wide field falls on segments of the sight pin fibers coiled in the housing of the optical unit or falls on a trap which redirects the light onto the fiber segments. A lens may optionally be employed to promote the collection of ambient light, and a shutter or variable size aperture may be provided to control the light reaching the sight pin fibers. An elastomeric damper can be advantageously mounted on the sight to minimize accuracy effecting shock and/or vibration, and a level bubble may be provided to aid in avoiding cant of the bow to which the sight is mounted.10-02-2008
20080236556Fall-away arrow rest - Fall away arrow rests for archery bows. The rests have an arm with an arrow-supporting feature and an arm-associated axle which pivots the arm to displace the arrow-supporting feature between a first, arrow-loading position and a second, more elevated, arrow-launching position. The arrow support arm can be adjusted vertically, laterally, and in fore-and-aft directions relative to a riser or other rigid bow component on which the rest is mounted. Radial arms rotatable with the axle and connectable to a buss cable or cable slide by a flexible link rotate the arm to elevate the arrow-supporting feature to its arrow-launching when the bow is drawn and offer further adjustment of the arrow rest operation. A coil spring installed in an axle housing returns the arrow-supporting feature to its first, loading position concomitantly with arrow launch, moving the support out of the path the arrow travels as it leaves the bow. Axle-associated stops automatically stop the arm-associated axle as the arrow-supporting feature respectively reaches its arrow-launching and arrow-loading positions. One or more dampers can be advantageously attached to arrow rest structural members to reduce shock and vibrations, including noise, as the arrow support arm displaces the arrow-supporting feature between its first and second positions, especially as an arrow is launched from the bow. Noise reduction can be furthered by a installing a Teflon or comparable component on the arrow-supporting feature of the arm and/or by installing an elastomeric pad on the rigid bow component in the path followed by the arrow-supporting feature as that feature approaches its arrow-loading position.10-02-2008

20110295796SYNCHRONIZATION OF SUBSETS OF DATA INCLUDING SUPPORT FOR VARYING SET MEMBERSHIP - An efficient way and general mechanism is provided to represent and exchange knowledge and/or partial knowledge across nodes when synchronizing between any two nodes including custom or move filters where set membership can change over time at a device as data items come in and out of filter scope. A first node sends a second node its knowledge and/or partial knowledge, including objects and versions of those objects. The second node compares its knowledge and/or partial knowledge with the knowledge and/or partial knowledge of the first node, and then sends the first node any latest versions of objects of which the first node is unaware. In addition, the second node sends its knowledge and/or partial knowledge to the first node. The first node then performs a similar object-by-object version comparison to determine any conflicts due to independent evolution of objects and any changes that can be sent to the second node in order to bring the objects of the second node up to date with the knowledge and/or partial knowledge of the first node. Replicas can track filters to efficiently support synchronizing with filtered replicas. Filter forgotten knowledge is also used to represent how recently a replica can guarantee to know which items have been in the filter. Ghosts can be used to represent items that have been in the filter recently but have currently moved out. Filter forgotten knowledge concept allows both new filters to be tracked when they are introduced into the community, as well as periodically cleaning up of tombstones and ghosts.12-01-2011

20090083441SYNCHRONIZATION OF WEB SERVICE ENDPOINTS IN A MULTI-MASTER SYNCHRONIZATION ENVIRONMENT - A Web service synchronization protocol is provided that sets forth the metadata and messaging by which endpoints roam, share and synchronize common information with one another in a multi-master networked computing ecosystem. A general SOAP-based protocol is defined for synchronizing data between two endpoints where one or more of the endpoints supports a Web service. Defining messaging for knowledge-based transfers using XML Web services, the protocol allows devices, services and applications to synchronize through firewalls, allows for flexibility by allowing any common set or subset of information across endpoints and allows for extensibility by not prescribing the schema of the actual data being synchronized at the endpoints.03-26-2009
20090196179REPRESENTATION OF QUALITATIVE OBJECT CHANGES IN A KNOWLEDGE BASED FRAMEWORK FOR A MULTI-MASTER SYNCHRONIZATION ENVIRONMENT - The subject disclosure relates to synchronizing among network nodes in a multi-master synchronization environment that extend a knowledge based synchronization framework to include notions of object quality. In one embodiment, additional dimension(s) are placed on a knowledge vector for a given version of an object that represent quality information for the object, which is accounted for during the synchronization process to allow nodes to decide what types of qualities of objects should be conveyed to them as part of the synchronization process. Other embodiments include tombstoning objects to avoid future synchronization with respect to same objects maintained by other nodes in the multi-master synchronization environment. Advantageously, according to the synchronization framework, endpoints can synchronize data in a way that allows a definition and consideration of quality of one or more objects of the synchronized data for purposes of a knowledge exchange.08-06-2009
