20090321245GENERATION OF COUPLED PLASMA DISCHARGES FOR USE IN LIQUID-PHASE OR GAS-PHASE PROCESSES - A method of stimulating chemical reactions within a fluid media uses a gas plasma ejected from a gas-buffered microhollow cathode discharge apparatus into the fluid media. The apparatus has an electrically-conductive housing with an electrode positioned therein such as to create air channels between the electrode and the housing. The electrode is electrically insulated from the housing except at a location near the plasma outlet. A DC voltage is applied across the electrode and housing to accelerate the plasma and eject it into the fluid media. In another aspect, the housing includes a cup portion and a conduit portion that are electrically isolated from each other. When a DC voltage is applied across the electrode and the conduit, the plasma is ejected and filamentous discharges occur between the cup and the conduit. Such multicavity coupled plasma discharges provide voltage amplification and DC pulses with rates in the nanosecond regime.12-31-2009

20100227554SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR DIRECT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICES - A wireless communication device includes conventional components to permit a network communication link to be established with a wireless communication network. In addition, the wireless communication device includes a non-network short-range transceiver that detects the presence of other similarly equipped devices. When two such equipped devices come within proximity of each other, a direct non-network wireless communication link is established. The two devices exchange portions of profile data and each analyzed the received profile data. If a match occurs, a contact notification is generated. This permits the wireless communication device to act as an auto-detecting social network device that detects the proximity of other devices whose owners have a profile that matches the stored user preference data. Subsequent communication may occur in a conventional manner using the wireless network communication channels and web applications may also be used to gain additional information.09-09-2010

20110019178Method for post processing fiber optic strain measurement data - Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS) systems are used to measure strain using optical fibers functioning as linear sensors. Strain is measured along the fiber optic cable over large distances using a BOTDR (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) which is a Fiber Optic Strain Analyzer based on Brillouin technology. This measurement is popular in the Geotechnical field to monitor structural integrity of bridges, tunnels, mines etc. It is also popular in many industries including the Oil and Gas industry. The procedure involves recording strain data traces periodically to compare structural changes that may have developed over time. However, it is difficult to observe small changes from the raw data traces. This is due to the large number of data points and strain irregularities inherited in the fiber cable. This invention provides a simple and economical way to observe clearly very small strain changes acting on a structure. This is done by post processing the data traces with a low pass filter. The data traces are smoothed out and small strain differences can be easily observed and analyzed.01-27-2011
