Method and apparatus in combination with a storage means for carrying out an authentication process for authenticating a subsequent transaction - A computer, such as a WINDOWS® operating system-based PC, has associated with it a Subscriber Identity Module (or SIM), such as of the type used in a GSM cellular telephone system. The SIM can be authenticated by the telephone network, in the same way as for authenticating SIMs of telephone handset users in the network, and can in this way authenticate the user of the PC or the PC itself. Such authentication can, for example, permit use of the PC in relation to a particular application which is released to the PC after the authentication is satisfactorily completed. The application may be released to the PC by a third party after and in response to the satisfactory completion of the authentication process. A charge for the session can be debited to the user by the telecommunications network and then passed on to the third party. | 04-07-2011

DOWNHOLE MODULATOR APPARATUS - A modulator is disclosed for creating a pressure pulse in a fluid-filled well. The modulator comprises a tool body on which a plurality of extendable arms are mounted. The arms may be retracted into a stowed position substantially adjacent the tool body, or may be extended to meet the wall of the borehole. The arms are preferably resilient bowsprings that may be flexed outwards from the tool by means of an actuator pushing on at least one end of the springs. A flexible valve sleeve or bag is suspended between the arms and cooperates with a valve mounted adjacent the sleeve on the tool body. The valve sleeve creates a fluid-flow path through the valve, and in operation, the valve closes one end of the valve sleeve to create the pressure pulse. Sealing of the valve sleeve against the wall of the well is a result of the fluid pressure inflating the sleeve against the well wall. As a result, sealing takes place over an extended area of the bag and is dynamically responsive to changes in fluid flow or pressure. | 05-27-2010

Phase Change Memory Cell with Vertical Transistor - A memory cell in an integrated circuit is fabricated in part by forming a lower electrode feature, an island, a sacrificial feature, a gate feature, and a phase change feature. The island is formed on the lower electrode feature and has one or more sidewalls. It comprises a lower doped feature, a middle doped feature formed above the lower doped feature, and an upper doped feature formed above the middle doped feature. The sacrificial feature is formed above the island, while the gate feature is formed along each sidewall of the island. The gate feature overlies at least a portion of the middle doped feature of the island and is operative to control an electrical resistance therein. Finally, the phase feature is formed above the island at least in part by replacing at least a portion of the sacrificial feature with a phase change material. The phase change material is operative to switch between lower and higher electrical resistance states in response to an application of an electrical signal. | 01-01-2009
LAYER PATTERNING USING DOUBLE EXPOSURE PROCESSES IN A SINGLE PHOTORESIST LAYER - A structure and a method for forming the same. The method includes providing a structure which includes (a) a to-be-patterned layer, (b) a photoresist layer on top of the to-be-patterned layer wherein the photoresist layer includes a first opening, and (c) a cap region on side walls of the first opening. A first top surface of the to-be-patterned layer is exposed to a surrounding ambient through the first opening. The method further includes performing a first lithography process resulting in a second opening in the photoresist layer. The second opening is different from the first opening. A second top surface of the to-be-patterned layer is exposed to a surrounding ambient through the second opening. | 02-05-2009
Method of Making Integrated Circuit Chip Utilizing Oriented Carbon Nanotube Conductive Layers - A conductive layer in an integrated circuit is formed as a sandwich having multiple sublayers, including at least one sublayer of oriented carbon nanotubes. The conductive layer sandwich preferably contains two sublayers of carbon nanotubes, in which the carbon nanotube orientation in one sublayer is substantially perpendicular to that of the other layer. The conductive layer sandwich preferably contains one or more additional sublayers of a conductive material, such as a metal. In one embodiment, oriented carbon nanotubes are created by forming a series of elongated parallel catalyst strips on a horizontal surface, and growing carbon nanotubes from the catalyst in the presence of a directional flow of reactant gases. | 10-28-2010

SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE WITH ENHANCED STRESS BY GATES STRESS LINER - In one embodiment, a method is provided for forming stress in a semiconductor device. The semiconductor device may include a gate structure on a substrate, wherein the gate structure includes at least one dummy material that is present on a gate conductor. A conformal dielectric layer is formed atop the semiconductor device, and an interlevel dielectric layer is formed on the conformal dielectric layer. The interlevel dielectric layer may be planarized to expose at least a portion of the conformal dielectric layer that is atop the gate structure, in which the exposed portion of the conformal dielectric layer may be removed to expose an upper surface of the gate structure. The upper surface of the gate structure may be removed to expose the gate conductor. A stress inducing material may then be formed atop the at least one gate conductor. | 02-24-2011

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR SELECTING SURVEY QUESTIONS AND AVAILABLE RESPONSES - Systems and methods are provided for selecting survey questions and response for inclusion in a survey using a survey software application. Survey questions may be selected based on the response variance or inclusion value of each survey question. A non-inclusive list of survey responses may be selected based on the selection rate of each survey response. The response rates may be adjusted to correct for instances where survey participants selected a response indicating that none of the provided responses was adequate because a hidden response was not provided. Selected survey questions and responses may be provided to a survey participant. | 03-31-2011

Innerduct structure having increased flexibility - Provided herein are flexible, low friction innerduct structures configured to contain at least one cable within a conduit. The innerduct structures, or conduit inserts, include one or more strip-shaped panels of flexible material that are joined to define at least one channel through which a cable can extend. The innerduct structures preferably are formed from a woven textile fabric having warp yarns that are monofilaments and fill yarns that are an alternating pattern of monofilament yarns and multifilament yarns. Such construction increases the flexibility of the fabric, as compared to previous innerduct fabrics, resulting in a reduction of the pulling force required to draw the cable through the innerduct and into position. | 10-30-2008
