20080242791Methods of Producing Vinyl Aromatic Polymers Using (Meth)Acrylic Macroinitiators - The present invention relates to the use of poly acrylic and/or methacrylic macroinitiators in the free radical addition reaction of vinyl aromatic monomers to improve the properties of the resulting copolymer and/or composite. More particularly, the present invention relates to the production of poly acrylic and/or poly methacrylic macroinitiators having nitroxyl end groups. Using such macroinitiators in the free radical addition reaction of vinyl aromatics such as polystyrene compatibilizes the acrylic monomer in the vinyl aromatic matrix thereby improving the properties of the resulting polymer.10-02-2008
20080261019Pvc/Wood Composite - The present invention relates to a thermoplastic/natural cellulosic fiber composite, and more specifically to a high molecular weight compatibilizer within that composite resulting in both a high flex strength and high modulus and significant reduction in water absorption. The compatibilizer is preferably a terpolymer comprising: a) 0.5-20 percent by weight of monomer units selected from the group consisting of maleic anhydride, substituted maleic anhydride, mono-ester of maleic anhydride, itaconic anhydride, maleic acid, fumaric acid, crotonic acid, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid; b) 0 to 40 percent by weight of monomer units selected from styrene and functionalized styrene; and c) 40 to 98.5 percent by weight of monomer units selected from the group consisting of C10-23-2008
20080312377Low Surface Energy Block Copolymer Preparation Methods and Applications - Methods for the preparation of low surface energy block co-polymers are disclosed. The block co-polymers comprise at least two blocks, each of which comprises, in polymerized form, an acrylic monomer, a methacrylic monomer, or a mixture thereof. At least one block is a low surface energy block, which comprises, in polymerized form, a low surface energy monomer Low surface energy macroinitiators useful in forming the block co-polymers are also disclosed. The block co-polymers may be prepared by nitroxide mediated controlled free radical polymerization.12-18-2008
20090270559ACID FUNCTIONALIZED GRADIENT BLOCK COPOLYMERS - The present invention relates to a class of acid functionalized gradient block copolymers, processes for obtaining them and to their uses including but not limited to hair fixatives, toughening agents, and adhesives. Surprisingly, the applicant has discovered the aforementioned class of acid functionalized gradient block copolymers have advantageous properties and can find utility in a wide variety of application areas. These polymers are easily prepared by sequential monomer addition (i.e., “one-pot” synthesis) and the process does not require any post polymerization modification steps. The aforementioned polymers are derived from commonly utilized monomers. The use of common monomers provides both an economic advantage and an inherent safety advantage, e.g., the common monomers are considered biocompatible.10-29-2009
20100010103POLYMER ENCAPSULATION AND/OR BINDING - Encapsulation of and binding to pegylated bioactive molecules via functionalized comb, block, branched type polymers formed by nitroxide mediated controlled radical polymerization is disclosed.01-14-2010

20100269581Torso Simulator for Ballistics Testing - A device for simulating the torso of an animal or human to determine projectile performance is provided, comprising a support frame; and a plurality of selectively removable simulant inserts, including a hide simulant insert, a muscle simulant insert, a bone simulant insert, and one or more internal organ simulant insert, and wherein the simulant inserts are placed within the support frame in a predetermined order specific to the type of animal or human being simulated. The support frame includes a mounting device to secure the support frame to a ground surface, and a base adapted to orient the support frame at a selectable angle relative to a projectile path. The support frame further includes a locking device adapted to secure the simulant inserts to the support frame. In a preferred embodiment, the locking device includes a fastener slidably disposed within a slot formed in the support frame, and an extended member adapted to contact one of the simulant inserts.10-28-2010
