METHOD FOR RECOVERING HEAVY/VISCOUS OILS FROM A SUBTERRANEAN FORMATION - Disclosed are methods for improving the production of heavy/viscous crude oil from subterranean formations comprising secondary production through use of a displacement fluid (typically a waterflood) wherein the subterranean formation is subjected to cyclic periods of overinjection of the displacement fluid followed by underinjection of the displacement fluid, but keeping the overall cumulative voidage replacement ratio (VRR) within a defined range, typically targeted to be about 1. In some aspects, the initial production of such heavy/viscous crude oil is limited, if possible, followed this cyclic secondary production methodology. By keeping the initial production, VRR, and cumulative VRR in defined ranges, the expected ultimate recovery (EUR) can be optimized, and overall production increased for example by as much as 100% or more relative to conventional production methods. | 04-15-2010
Method to Control Driving Fluid Breakthrough During Production of Hydrocarbons from a Subterranean Reservoir - The invention is directed to a method for controlling driving fluid breakthrough caused by zones of pressure communication, i.e., a matrix bypass event (“MBE”) or a wormhole, having a void space and possibly areas of enhanced permeability (a halo region) associated with the void space, within a subterranean formation arising from use of a driving fluid in reservoirs where heavy/viscous oil is being produced. In particular, the method is directed to remediation of pressure communication between injection and production wells used to produce heavy/viscous oil by way of a waterflood operation combined with a cold production method. Direct or rapid communication of water between the injector and producer wells makes the waterflood recovery process virtually ineffective and limits the production of oil from the reservoir. The invention comprises in embodiments a method wherein a slurry of a cementitious material is injected into the zone, which upon setting, provides a cement plug in the void space that reduces the pressure communication and flow of driving fluid within the zone. Another step is used to inject a gel precursor within the zone, which upon setting, produces a gel plug that also reduces pressure communication and driving fluid flow through the halo region of the zone. | 02-03-2011

SYSTEM, METHOD, AND APPARATUS FOR LEADING EDGE STRUCTURES AND DIRECT MANUFACTURING THEREOF - Leading edge structures for high performance aircraft and the direct manufacture thereof are disclosed. Direct manufacturing technology is used to deposit leading edge structures directly from a digital model to form near-net shape products. This technique permits a wider range of materials to be utilized, such as casting alloys capable of the highest temperature usage that are not available in billet or sheet form. Refractory metals or high temperature ceramics also may be used to form the entire lead edge structure, or just a replaceable tip of the leading edge structure. | 04-23-2009

System, method, and apparatus for variable hardness gradient armor alloys - A variable hardness gradient armor alloy is produced with a liquid-state reaction between a metallic molten pool and a gaseous atmosphere having a small fraction of reactive gas. The content of the reactant gas is varied as the armor is fabricated in order to vary the properties of the resultant material across its thickness and typically include, for example, a hardened outer or initial layer for impact resistance, and at least one inner layer having a lower hardness than the outer layer but greater energy absorption. | 04-01-2010
SYSTEM, METHOD, AND APPARATUS FOR FORMING BALLISTIC ARMOR FROM CERAMIC AND SHAPE MEMORY METALLIC ALLOY MATERIALS - A ballistic armor uses shape memory alloys and novel joining techniques to form a solution from a combination of shape memory metallic alloys (SMA) and ceramic materials. The SMA allows a high amount of strain to be recovered through a low temperature heat treatment. The amount of strain recoverable is much higher than that available through conventional thermal expansion mismatch solutions. Solid state or low temperature bonding methods are used to join the dissimilar materials. This joining technique avoids introducing excessive heat that would cause the SMA to transform before the armor system is assembled. | 10-28-2010

An input/output subsystem image is identified by an input/output subsystem image identifier, which is used by various programs to designate the particular input/output subsystem image for which an I/O operation is to be performed. An input/output subsystem image includes, for instance, one or more input/output paths. An input/output path of an input/output subsystem image is identified by an input/output path identifier, as well as a physical input/output path identifier. | 10-23-2008 |
