20100199123Distributed Storage of Recoverable Data - A system, method, and computer program product replace a failed node storing data relating to a portion of a data file. An indication of a new storage node to replace the failed node is received at each of a plurality of available storage nodes. The available storage nodes each contain a plurality of shares generated from a data file. These shares may have been generated based on pieces of the data file using erasure coding techniques. A replacement share is generated at each of the plurality of available storage nodes. The replacement shares are generated by creating a linear combination of the shares at each node using random coefficients. The generated replacement shares are then sent from the plurality of storage nodes to the indicated new storage node. These replacement shares may later be used to reconstruct the data file.08-05-2010
20100284276End-System Dynamic Rate Limiting of Background Traffic - Dynamic rate limiting of background traffic to alleviate congestion in the access network is enabled. ICMP echo round-trip times and ICMP losses to a nearby node outside the local area and just beyond the divergence in end-to-end paths are measured, allowing unambiguous discrimination of nearby from distant congestion points. Using round-trip time samples, either short-run delay or short-run variance in delay can be measured to estimate congestion. When combined with an appropriate control law, background traffic can be rapidly reduced to allow interactive traffic to traverse unhindered through the access network. The described system and methods can be implemented in the application-layer and without any additional support from the network.11-11-2010
20110202679Classification and Verification of Static File Transfer Protocols - Classification and verification of static file transfer protocols is provided. A network node sitting in the path of packets classifies traffic according to its content, and then statistically verifies that the content actually matches the initial classification. Classification and verification are standard building blocks in networks systems that provide quality-of-service. However, unlike traditional quality-of-service building blocks, a system of the present invention takes a trust-but-verify approach, and thus can rely on longer-timescale statistical online or offline verification to reduce computational requirements. This improves scalability and reduces the cost and complexity that in part has prevented prior service differentiation systems from succeeding in the Internet. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can combine the classification and verification building blocks with a networked directory service to allow further classification as to whether particular content is for pay.08-18-2011

20090025778SHADING PROTECTION FOR SOLAR CELLS AND SOLAR CELL MODULES - In accordance with one aspect of the invention, there is provided a shading protected solar cell apparatus for use in a solar cell system. The apparatus includes a solar cell having a front side current collector and a back side current collector. The apparatus also includes a bypass diode closely adjacent the back side current collector, the bypass diode having a front side current collector and a back side current collector. The apparatus further includes a first electrical coupling for electrically coupling the front side current collector of the bypass diode to the back side current collector of the solar cell. The apparatus also includes a second electrical coupling for electrically coupling the back side current collector of the bypass diode to the front side current collector of the solar cell, the first and second electrical couplings cooperating to enable a current generated by non-shaded solar cells in the system to be shunted through the bypass diode when the solar cell is shaded. The apparatus further includes a thermal coupling thermally coupling the bypass diode to a back side of the solar cell such that heat generated in the bypass diode due to current shunted through the bypass diode is dissipated by the solar cell sufficiently to avoid burning the solar cell or the bypass diode when the solar cell is shaded.01-29-2009
20110189810CRYSTALLINE SILICON PV CELL WITH SELECTIVE EMITTER PRODUCED WITH LOW TEMPERATURE PRECISION ETCH BACK AND PASSIVATION PROCESS - A method of forming a selective emitter in a photovoltaic (PV) crystalline silicon semiconductor wafer involves forming a mask on a front side surface of the wafer to create masked and unmasked areas on the front side surface. A first silicon oxide layer is electrochemically formed at the unmasked areas of the front side surface such that the silicon oxide layer extends into an emitter of the wafer at least as far as a dead zone therein. The mask is removed and the first silicon oxide layer is etched back until substantially all of the first silicon oxide layer is removed. A second silicon oxide layer is then electrochemically formed on the front side surface such that the second silicon oxide layer has sufficient thickness to passivate the front side surface.08-04-2011

20090217861CONSTRUCTION OF FPDSO VESSEL - A vessel with drilling and workover capability is constructed rapidly in a shipyard or dry dock by using an existing vessel that has most of the required hull. Bow and stern sections of the existing vessel are separated to leave them at opposite ends of a shipyard space, and a mid hull section is built in that shipyard space in the usual manner by welding together steel plates. The bow and stern sections are moved against opposite ends of the mid hull section and welded to it. Topside equipment is already on the bow and stern sections, and is added to the new mid hull section.09-03-2009
