Use of an in vitro hemodynamic endothelial/smooth muscle cell co-culture model to identify new therapeutic targets for vascular disease - An in vitro biomechanical model used to applied hemodynamic (i.e., blood flow) patterns modeled after the human circulation to human/animal cells in culture. This model replicates hemodynamic flow patterns that are measured directly from the human circulation using non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging and translated to the motor that controls the rotation of the cone. The cone is submerged in fluid (i.e., cell culture media) and brought into close proximity to the surface of the cells that are grown on the plate surface. The rotation of the cone transduces momentum on the fluid and creates time-varying shear stresses on the plate or cellular surface. This model most closely mimics the physiological hemodynamic forces imparted on endothelial cells (cell lining blood vessels) in vivo and overcomes previous flow devices limited in applying more simplified nonphysiological flow patterns. Another aspect of this invention is directed to incorporate a transwell co-cultured dish. This permits two to three or more different cell types to be physically separated within the culture dish environment, while the inner cellular surface is exposed to the simulated hemodynamic flow patterns. Other significant modifications include custom in-flow and out-flow tubing to supply media, drugs, etc. separately and independently to both the inner and outer chambers of the coculture model. External components are used to control for physiological temperature and gas concentration. The physical separation of adherent cells by the artificial transwell membrane and the bottom of the Petri dish permits each cell layer, or surface to be separately isolated for an array of biological analyses (i.e., protein, gene, etc.). | 02-26-2009
USE OF AN IN VITRO HEMODYNAMIC ENDOTHELIAL/SMOOTH MUSCLE CELL CO-CULTURE MODEL TO IDENTIFY NEW THERAPEUTIC TARGETS FOR VASCULAR DISEASE - Methods and devices for applying hemodynamic patterns to human/animal cells in culture are described. Hemodynamic flow patterns are measured directly from the human circulation and translated to a motor that controls the rotation of a cone. The cone is submerged in fluid (i.e., cell culture media) and brought into close proximity to the cells. Rotation of the cone creates time-varying shear stresses. This model closely mimics the physiological hemodynamic forces imparted on endothelial cells in vivo. A TRANSWELL coculture dish (i.e., a coculture dish comprising an artificial porous membrane) may be incorporated, permitting two, three, or more different cell types to be physically separated within the culture dish environment. In-flow and out-flow tubing may be used to supply media, drugs, etc. separately and independently to both the inner and outer chambers. The physical separation of the cell types permits each cell type to be separately isolated for analysis. | 03-10-2011

System and Method for Un-Issuing Voting Credits - The present invention is directed to a system and method for un-issuing a voting credit that has been erroneously issued to a voter in an election. The system includes an electronic poll book that is used to check-in a voter by locating the appropriate voter record and analyzing the voter record to determine whether a voting credit has been issued to the voter in the election. If a voting credit has been issued to the voter, the electronic poll book displays an indication that the voter has already voted in the election. If it is determined that the voting credit was erroneously issued to the voter, a poll worker enters an un-issue code into the poll book. The poll book verifies the validity of the un-issue code and updates the voter record so as to un-issue the voting credit. As such, the voter may vote a regular ballot in the election. | 08-18-2011

EARLY WEAR DETECTION - A drill bit with a bit body having a central bore in communication with a plurality of nozzles for directing drilling fluid; a plurality of cutters defining a cutting face of the bit; and a passageway extending from the central bore toward the cutting face, such that excessive wear of the cutting face opens the passageway to allow the drilling fluid to flow therethrough, thereby reducing a surface pressure of the drilling fluid and indicating excessive wear of the bit. The passageway may extend to adjacent, or within one half inch or three inches of, the cutting face, such that excessive wear opens the passageway to the cutting face. In some cases, the passageway may actually extend through the cutting face with a plug inserted into the passageway at the cutting face to prevent the drilling fluid from exiting the passageway absent wear of the bit. | 12-01-2011

Intelligent Debris Removal Tool - A debris removal tool uses a screen to separate the debris coming into the tool from the moving fluid. The fluid that gets through the screen then operates a flow sensing device that is preferably a turbine whose speed of rotation or other characteristics of its movement generates a signal that is picked up by the measurement while drilling tool and conveyed to the surface. The surface personnel first respond by turning off surface pumps to allow debris to fall by gravity off the clogged screen. If that fails, the tool is pulled through the well fluid inducing a reverse flow through the screen to get the debris blocking it to go back into the well through the debris removal tool inlet. | 11-18-2010

Distributed Database Write Caching With Limited Durability - A distributed database system includes a central data server, and a plurality of application nodes for receiving connections from clients. Each application node is in communication with the central data server, and has a data cache which maintains local copies of recently used data items. The central data server keeps track of which data items are stored in each data cache and makes callback requests to the data caches to request the return of data items that are needed elsewhere. Data items, including modified data items, are cached locally at a local application node so long as the locally cached data items are only being accessed by the local application node. The local application node handles transactions and stores changes to the data items. The local application node forwards changes, in order by transaction, to the central data server to insure consistency, thereby providing limited durability write caching. | 12-02-2010

PRIVATE SUPPLEMENTAL UNEMPLOYMENT/LAYOFF INSURANCE METHOD AND SYSTEM - A system and method for computing unemployment insurance premiums that directly supplements government unemployment benefits. To facilitate risk calculations, the work force is classified by industry, occupation, income level, geographic location and many other factors. The insurance premiums are calculated as part of a larger model of private unemployment insurance for high-income workers. If the worker's income exceeds a certain threshold, the insurance would supplement the replacements the government already provides. Additionally this process includes the methods in which the claimant's eligibility is assessed, and how the program is administered (including the claims process). Claim verification relies on piggybacking on the state's determination of a claimant's eligibility for unemployment compensation payments, and the premium computation process takes into account a state's history with respect to granting and denying such claims. The process can also be extrapolated to a non pure supplemental policy. | 06-11-2009

Signal Degradation Detection - Implementations are directed to predicting signal degradation at receivers used to display a programming service. The receivers capture signal strength data that is then transmitted to a processing location, which may be associated with a provider of the programming service. A signal degradation detector at the provider operates to predict whether or not a future unacceptable signal quality will occur within a time interval. The prediction may be based on a test quantity calculated from signals captured at the receiver and based on a figure of merit for the geographic locale in which the receiver is located. A maintenance call may be initiated for those receivers that have such a poor signal quality. | 12-29-2011
