20090123800Post-reformer treatment of reformate gas - A method of modifying reformate gas composition downstream of the reformer so that it remains in a carbon-free region, i.e. above the critical oxygen/carbon ratio even at the desired minimum operating temperature. This is accomplished by using staged partial oxidation in a partial oxidation chamber downstream of the reformer. A small amount of air (or oxygen) is added. The net result is an increase in the oxygen/carbon ratio and, thus, a lowering of the required temperature for soot-free operation. Immediately downstream of this partial oxidation chamber, heat can be removed to cool the gas prior to a second stage of partial oxidation. A second stage partial oxidation chamber produces additional water and further increases the oxygen/carbon ratio and further lowers the required gas temperature for soot-free operation. Further stages of partial oxidation followed by cooling of the gas can be repeated until the oxygen/carbon ratio is sufficiently high to allow soot-free operation at the lowest required operating temperature.05-14-2009

20080309919METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SORTING AND ANALYZING PARTICLES IN AN AEROSOL WITH REDUNDANT PARTICLE ANALYSIS - A method and apparatus for sorting and performing redundant analysis of particles in an aerosol is disclosed. Redundant analysis reduces the possibility of false positive analyses, which is advantageous in the art. The apparatus may comprise an aerosol concentrator, an optical particle analyzer, an electrosprayer and a charged particle analyzer. A method according to the invention may comprise delivering a concentrated aerosol stream to an optical particle analyzer; analyzing each particle of interest and selectively triggering an electrosprayer to electrospray each particle of interest; adding a charge to the particle, which is then moved by electrostatic forces to a charged particle analyzer; and performing a second, redundant analysis of each charged particle collected on the charged particle analyzer to confirm the identity of the particle of interest. The apparatus and method may also be adapted to perform redundant analysis of disguised particles that are coated to disguise their payload.12-18-2008

20100067565METHODS FOR IN-BAND SIGNALING THROUGH ENHANCED VARIABLE-RATE CODECS - Improvements are disclosed for in-band signaling, i.e., transmission of data in a voice channel of a digital wireless network during a voice call session. A family of narrow-band signaling methods is disclosed to successfully pass data-carrying signals through the low-bit rate modes of the EVRC-B vocoder commonly used in CDMA wireless channels. Some embodiments generate a tapered signaling waveform in tandem with another waveform using FSK-modulation. These features can be used in cell phones or other wireless communication devices, including automotive applications.03-18-2010

20090117947WIRELESS IN-BAND SIGNALING WITH IN-VEHICLE SYSTEMS - This invention pertains to methods and apparatus for data communications from vehicles, to obtain emergency, concierge and other services, using a voice channel of a digital wireless telecommunications network. Signaling is described for commencing data sessions after establishing a voice channel call. The call may be initiated from the vehicle automatically, and the call taker location may be unattended. Signaling methods are selected for traversing both newer and legacy vocoders for ubiquitous operation.05-07-2009
20110029832EFFICIENT ERROR CORRECTION SCHEME FOR DATA TRANSMISSION IN A WIRELESS IN-BAND SIGNALING SYSTEM - In one example, a mobile device segments a payload for transmission to a remote server and provides redundant data for each payload segment. The remote server examines the received payload on a per segment basis using the redundant data to identify segments associated with errors. The server then requests error correction bits for the identified segments using one or more exchanges with the mobile device. Thereafter, the server can perform error correction using the received error correction bits and then request re-transmission of the payload, if needed.02-03-2011
20110125488ADAPTIVE DATA TRANSMISSION FOR A DIGITAL IN-BAND MODEM OPERATING OVER A VOICE CHANNEL - In one example, a mobile device encodes a digital bitstream using a particular set of modulation parameters to generate an audio signal that has different audio tones selected to pass through a vocoder of the mobile device. The particular set of modulation parameters is optimized for a subset of a plurality of vocoding modes without a priori knowledge of which one of the vocoding modes is currently operated by the vocoder. The mobile device conducts transmissions over the wireless telecommunications network through the vocoder using the particular set of modulation parameters, and monitors these transmissions for errors. If the errors reach a threshold, then the vocoder may be using one of the vocoding modes that are not included in the subset for which the particular set of modulation parameters is optimized, and accordingly, the modulation device switches from the particular set of modulation parameters to a different set of modulation parameters.05-26-2011
