201102858263D CAMERA AND IMAGING METHOD - A 3D camera comprises first and second laterally displaced optical imaging systems each comprising one or more lenses. The optical imaging systems also each comprise one or more actuators arranged to move one or more lenses of the respective optical imaging system, and a digital image analyser configured to evaluate the respective field of view of first and second images of a stereoscopic image pair obtained respectively from the first and second optical imaging systems and to generate a disparity value based on a disparity between the respective fields of view. The 3D camera is arranged in operation to adjust the field of view of one or more images generated by the first and second optical imaging systems responsive to the disparity value so as to reduce the disparity between the respective fields of view of stereoscopic image pairs obtained from the first and second optical imaging systems.11-24-2011
20110306413ENTERTAINMENT DEVICE AND ENTERTAINMENT METHODS - An entertainment device comprises a display, an object position detector to detect a three-dimensional position of an object in front of an image plane of the display, and a source position detector to detect a source position of a pointing source with respect to the display. A pointing direction indicates a direction in which the pointing source is pointing. The device also comprises a direction detector to detect a pointing direction of a user control device. The pointing direction of the user control device is associated with the pointing direction, so that a change in the pointing direction of the user control device causes a change in the pointing direction of the pointing source. The device also comprises an alignment detector to detect whether the three-dimensional position lies on a line passing through the source position in the direction of the pointing direction of the pointing source.12-15-2011

20110068828Method and System for Detecting Timing Characteristics in a Communications System - The present invention provides a system for detecting timing characteristics of internal signals in a communications device, the system comprising: a system clock running at a known frequency; a test counter having a test input at which an internal signal to be tested is received; a gating counter having an input arranged to receive the system clock signal; and a system controller for controlling the counters; wherein the system controller controls the gating counter to count a predetermined number of system clock cycles to define a test period, and during the test period the test counter counts the cycles of the internal signal under test, whereby timing characteristics of the internal signal may be found with reference to a time base defined by the system clock. An associated method of operation is also described.03-24-2011
20120069871Temperature Compensation in a Telecommunications Device - A communications device, such as a GNSS receiver comprises an oscillator, having a temperature-dependent frequency characteristic, for generating signals at a nominal frequency; receiver circuitry, for receiving transmitted wireless signals using the signals generated by the oscillator; at least one temperature sensor, having a known positional relationship to the oscillator; an estimation device, for estimating a frequency of the signals generated by the oscillator, based on a measurement from the temperature sensor, and based on the temperature-dependent frequency characteristic of the oscillator; and at least one heat source. A change in the temperature of the oscillator is predicted, based on a state of the heat source, and further based on a model of the thermal properties of the communications device, and hence a change in the frequency of the signals generated by the oscillator is predicted, based on the temperature-dependent frequency characteristic of the oscillator. The receiver circuitry uses the estimated frequency of the signals generated by the oscillator, and the predicted change in the frequency of the signals generated by the oscillator, in receiving the transmitted wireless signals.03-22-2012

20100188286TIME REFERENCE SYSTEM - A time reference system for generating a time reference from signals produced by a global navigation satellite constellation has a satellite signal receiver to receive and down-convert code-modulated signals from a plurality of satellites and a correlator to track and decode the down-converted signals to provide signals containing partial pseudo-range measurements for respective satellites. A data processing arrangement receives assistance data from an external source and performs data-bit synchronisation in which bit edges of a low frequency data bit stream carried by the received satellite signals are identified, to perform a preliminary position-velocity-time solution to provide an approximate time reference, and to perform auto-correlation of pre-selected data sequences in the data stream to resolve time ambiguities thereby to compute a precise time reference signal in weak received signal conditions. The pre-selected data sequences may be the repeated data preamble in the GPS navigation message constituted by the data stream.07-29-2010

20080225689Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing having tones with overlaid data and pilot symbols - In one embodiment, an OFDM transmitter generates sets of frequency-domain data symbols from a stream of digital data. For each set of frequency-domain data symbols generated, the transmitter generates a corresponding set of frequency-domain pilot symbols. Each corresponding set of data symbols and pilot symbols are then multiplexed onto a set of frequency tones, such that, at least one tone is occupied by both a data symbol and a pilot symbol. For each tone having both a pilot symbol and data symbol, the pilot symbol and data symbol are added together to form an overlaid data and pilot (ODP) tone. Each set of tones having at least one ODP tone is then transmitted to an inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) processor that transforms each set of tones into an ODP OFDM symbol. Each ODP OFDM symbol is then prepared for transmission using digital-to-analog conversion, cyclic prefix insertion, and RF modulation.09-18-2008

20090296798HSDPA CO-PROCESSOR FOR MOBILE TERMINALS - In one embodiment, an HSDPA co-processor for 3GPP Release 6 Category 8 (7.2 Mb/s) HSDPA that provides all chip-rate, symbol-rate, physical-channel, and transport-channel processing for HSDPA in 90 nm CMOS. The co-processor design is scalable to all HSDPA data rates up to 14 Mb/s. The coprocessor implements an Advanced Receiver based on an NLMS equalizer, supports RX diversity and TX diversity, and provides up to 6.4 dB better performance than a typical single-antenna rake receiver. Thus, 3GPP R6 HSDPA functionality can be added to a legacy R99 modem using an HSDPA co-processor consistent with embodiments of the present invention, at a reasonable incremental cost and power.12-03-2009

20090036095INFORMATION SECURITY AND DELIVERY METHOD AND APPARATUS - A method includes storing at least one user datum received from a user in a secure storage portion of a memory within a mobile communication device. Authentication information is received into the mobile communication device. The at least one user datum is transmitted from the mobile communication device to a recipient in response to entry of the authentication information, while preventing the user of the mobile communication device from reading the at least one user datum.02-05-2009

20090077330MODIFIED BRANCH METRIC CALCULATOR TO REDUCE INTERLEAVER MEMORY AND IMPROVE PERFORMANCE IN A FIXED-POINT TURBO DECODER - A turbo decoder that calculates alpha, beta and gamma (branch metric) values does not normalize the branch metric but instead applies the normalization factor to the newly calculated extrinsic values before writing them to interleaving memory, resulting in use of less memory than in prior turbo decoders. A compensating factor is applied when the extrinsics are read from interleaving memory. The absence of normalization in the gamma calculation not only conserves memory but also enhances decoder sensitivity.03-19-2009

20110241232HOT WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR A COOLING TOWER - A cooling tower with a hot water distribution system includes a distribution lateral disposed above a hot water basin. The distribution lateral discharges fluid into the hot water basin, which in turn, releases the fluid through a plurality of orifices. As the fluid is released, it falls on heat-exchanging fill material that assists in increasing the cooling rate of the fluid. The distribution lateral is configured structurally to discharge the fluid through a plurality of outlets at one or more angles (as compared to the horizontal) into the hot water basins. In one embodiment, the outlets are arranged into one or more rows that extend along a substantial length of the distribution lateral. Discharging the fluid in this manner enhances and promotes a more even fluid flow within the hot water basin, which results in a more even fluid flow over and onto the fill material, thereby increasing thermal efficiency.10-06-2011
