20090176457Apparatus and method for communicating with moving receivers - An apparatus for communicating with mobile receivers for emergency notification and other purposes comprises a localized (low power) transmitter capable of transmitting short bursts of compressed audio or video messages over a selected spatial range. The apparatus further contains a means of measuring the relative speed of the transmitter and receiver(s) and adjusting the transmission accordingly (for example by increasing the output power, shortening the burst length, or increasing the burst repetition rate). In this way, the effective “footprint” of the transmitter and/or the message length is matched to the time the receiver(s) pass within range of the transmitter so that each receiver is able to capture at least one complete burst in the available time. The transmitter may be relatively fixed, for instance on a highway overpass, for communicating with vehicles passing on the highway. Alternatively, the transmitter may be mounted on an emergency vehicle to warn vehicles ahead or on intersecting roads that the emergency vehicle is approaching. In this case, the transmitter may adjust its effective range based on the speed of the emergency vehicle itself.07-09-2009

20100098001Adaptive Channel Selection by Wireless Nodes for Improved Operating Range - Improved message range in a wireless network is achieved by each node performing an energy/noise scan to determine a receiving channel having the lowest noise and/or interference, e.g., best reception conditions, relative to the other channels available in the wireless network. Each node may thereafter scan available channels periodically to adjust its optimal receiving channel if the noise/interference environment changes on its present receiving channel, e.g., noise/interference on another channel is less then the noise on the present receiving channel. When a receiving channel is changed by a node, the wireless node may broadcast this information to notify its neighbor nodes of the change in its receiving channel.04-22-2010

20080289714Flow Control Method and Apparatus - An apparatus and method for redirecting fluid flow in a plenum provides flow performance (quality), structural, and economic advantages by using an array of flat blades that is mounted at an angle with respect to the inlet (upstream) fluid flow, such that the blades are tilted with respect to that flow and correspondingly redirect the flow in a desired direction. The apparatus, also referred to as a “GSG” or “graduated straightening grid,” has a range of applications, and offers a number of performance, structural, and economic advantages in large-scale applications. As a particular, but non-limiting example, one or more embodiments of the flow-redirecting apparatus taught herein are configured for use in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems where catalytic reactors are used for scrubbing industrial flue gases.11-27-2008
