CONCURRENT SACCHARIFICATION AND FERMENTATION OF FIBROUS BIOMASS - A process for simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of a cellulosic solids fraction extracted from a lignocellulosic feedstock. The viscosity of the cellulosic solids fraction is reduced by intermixing with a liquid carbohydrate stream. A suitable liquid carbohydrate stream is a de-lignified liquids fraction that was previously separated from the solids fraction during processing of the lignocellulosic feedstock. Alternatively, the viscosity of the solids fraction may be reduced by commingling with a liquid carbohydrate stream comprising one or more monosaccharides. The reduced-viscosity cellulosic solids fraction is then commingled with a fermentative microbial inoculant and a cellulosic biomass-degrading enzyme composition. The commingled mixture is maintained in a pressurized reaction vessel under elevated temperatures to enable simultaneous enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulosic solids to monosaccharides and fermentation of the monosaccharides to produce an ethanolic beer. The ethanolic beer is distillable for recovery of fuel-grade ethanol and a stillage that may be further processed. | 01-08-2009

Method of imitating a natural geyser and a device for carrying out the method - A method and a device for imitating an artificial geyser that are simple and inexpensive in realization. The artificial geyser device comprises a sealed container located preferably underground in a shallow recess and filled with water. The container is provided with a heater for heating water to the level of boiling and with a common discharge pipe, one end of which is located in the container and can be adjusted with regard to the level of water while the opposite end extends to the atmosphere in the form of an eruption pipe with a supersonic nozzle on the output end. The common discharge pipe passes over the open ends of the U-shaped pipe arrangement. The device has a group of valves that selectively may change the direction of the eruption flow for passing to the atmosphere only through the common discharge pipe, only through the U-shaped arrangement, or through both simultaneously. | 01-08-2009

Method and transit time tester for monitoring the transit time of small-sized goods to be conveyed, particularly of letters and similar mail items - Disclosed is a method and a transit time tester for monitoring the transit time of an item to be conveyed, particularly a mail consignment, wherein the movements of a consignment are registered and stored in a transit time tester for later evaluation of the sequence of transportation. The transit time tester is equipped with sensors, satellite-based positioning system (GPS) receiver and storage media, corresponding in its dimensions and characteristics to the item to be conveyed to be monitored and determined from the sensor data the current type of conveyance with the aid of a microprocessor. To be monitored, the transit time and the routes of transportation of standard letters and similar mail consignments over a number of days. The receiver for the GPS is selectively switched on and off as a function of the changing conditions of reception and the current type of conveyance of the item to be conveyed. | 10-23-2008

EXPANDABLE OVERBED TABLE - An overbed table with a primary table top may be expanded through the deployment of a secondary table top. Advantageously, by appropriately arranging the position of the manner by which the secondary table top is mounted to the overbed table, the top surface of the secondary table top can occupy the same plane as the top surface of the primary table top. Additionally, the overbed table may incorporate further features including equipment rails, power receptacles, networking receptacles and a computing device. | 10-29-2009

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MODELLING AND SIMULATING OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF SPECIAL EFFECT PAINTS AND FOR DETERMINING ILLUMINATION AND MEASUREMENT GEOMETRIES FOR SPECTRAL PHOTOMETERS - A method that is suitable for modelling and simulating optical properties in special effect paints which contain pigments with isotropic light-scattering properties and pigments with anisotropic light-scattering properties, and the effect-producing substances form at least one layer of material or coat of paint on a suitable substrate. The method is also suitable for reproducing a shade of colour of a colour template of a special effect paint of this kind, by determining and comparing the optical properties of the colour template and a formulation of a paint mock-up, so that using the comparison a correction can be made to the formulation for the paint mock-up and the shades of colour of the colour template and paint mock-up can be matched. The method is characterised in that the isotropically light-scattering pigments and the anisotropically light-scattering pigments are virtually separated such that the isotropically light-scattering pigments virtually form the layer of material and the anisotropically light-scattering pigments are virtually arranged on the edge surfaces of the layer of material. The optical properties of the virtual layer of material of the isotropically light-scattering pigments are determined by linear differential equations and the optical properties of the anisotropically light-scattering pigments are taken into consideration as boundary conditions, by means of specific effect operators. | 02-25-2010

S-Parameter Measurement - A method and system utilizing a network analyzer and a test controller for measuring scattering parameters (S-parameters) of a microwave device that rapidly switches through a plurality of states. The test controller sends a trigger to the analyzer, which starts a frequency sweep having substantially the same start and stop frequency, and provides the sweep to the device. The analyzer then measures and stores at least one S-parameter of the device and provides the test controller with a trigger. The test controller updates the device to the next state in a predetermined sequence of states and the above steps are iteratively repeated until S-parameters for all of the states in the sequence have been measured. | 10-29-2009
