Managing Mobile Device Interactions Using Barcodes - A system allows a connecting a mobile device with a barcode scanner to a stationary device by scanning a barcode displayed on a display of the stationary device. The system allows connecting only one mobile device to the stationary device at any given time and allows connecting the mobile device to only one stationary device at any given time. Once connected to the stationary device, the mobile device may be used to scan additional printed barcodes and barcodes displayed by the stationary device or elsewhere, sending data corresponding to the scanned barcodes to the stationary device as if the data were entered by an input device of the stationary device. The barcode scanning functionality may also allow other ways of controlling the mobile device, including performing speed dialing, call transfer, or other telephone functionality based on barcode scanning Encryption and other similar techniques may be employed for additional security. | 03-15-2012

NON-FT PLANE ANGULAR FILTERS - Non-Fourier Transform (FT) plane angular filters and their use in holographic storage systems or devices for angular filtering of a data beam prior to recording holographic data or for angular filtering of a recovered beam prior to detecting the recovered holographic data. The non-FT plane filters may be a macrotube array, an etalon, a multi-layer thin film interference coating on a curved surface, a lenslet array device, a waveguide-like array, or a combination thereof. Also provided are methods for carrying out angular filtering using such filters for data storage and/or data recovery. | 10-02-2008

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL CONTROL UNIT FOR AN IONIC FOOT BATH SYSTEM - One particular implementation of the present invention may involve a control unit of an ionic foot bath or other health product. The control unit may be connected to a network or the Internet such that the control unit may be monitored or controlled by a third party, such that the third party may provide programming updates, adjust the programming of the control unit to conform to the user's preferences and provide flexibility to a practitioner with several foot bath systems. The control unit may also provide the functionality of a pay-per-use method for use of the ionic foot bath. The method may allow a user or an operator of the product to purchase operational time that is desired to use the product. Once the operating time is purchased, the product may be operated for the purchased amount of time, at which point, more usage time may be purchased. | 07-29-2010

METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR PROVIDING VOICE MAIL SERVICES - Methods and apparatus for retrieving and providing voice mail messages from a server are described. In accordance with the invention voice mail messages may be retrieved via requests made via a set top box. Voice mail messages are retrieved in response to the request from a voice mail server which is also accessible via the telephone network. Retrieved voice mail is transcoded and included in a video on demand (VOD) file. Text, call ID information and/or other information as, e.g., an automatically generated transcript of the voice mail message, may be included in the VOD file. The VOD file is supplied to a VOD server which provides the file including the message to the set top box for display. A user can view the messages and switch from viewing one message to the next by using video play back commands. | 03-10-2011
METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR COMBINING LOCAL VIDEO CONTENT IN A DIGITAL VIDEO STREAM - Methods and apparatus for supporting local video insertion into a content delivery signal are described. PIDs are assigned at a headend to identify locally inserted content. A QAM carrier used for content insertion may be fully utilized between the headend and multiple customer premises. Upon receipt of a content delivery signal the QAM carrier to be used for content insertion is filtered out and, optionally, some packets are recovered. Video from a local source is digitized, packetized, identified by a PID specified by the headend to be used to identify locally inserted content, multiplexed with recovered packets obtained from the QAM carrier to be used for local content insertion and then modulated onto the QAM carrier to be used for local content insertion. The QAM carrier is then combined with the other carrier signals recovered from the content delivery signal to generate a signal including both the locally provided content and the remotely supplied content. | 04-07-2011

TECHNIQUE FOR PROVIDING PROGRAM GUIDE DATA THROUGH A COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK DELIVERING PROGRAMMING CONTENT - In order to efficiently utilize the limited transmission bandwidth of a communications network, e.g., a cable network, guide data for constructing an interactive program guide (IPG) is delivered to a set-top terminal using different methodologies. For example, the guide data associated with those programs which are likely of interest to a user is automatically provided piecemeal in a broadcast stream. The set-top terminal, along with other terminals, may retrieve from such a broadcast stream some or all of the guide data therein over time, which is cached in the terminal in anticipation of a user's invocation of an IPG. On the other hand, the guide data associated with those programs which are less likely of interest to a user is furnished upon request by the set-top terminal needing such guide data to realize an IPG desired by the user. In addition, guide data for each program may be divided into detail guide data providing details of the program (e.g., a synopsis of the program content), and grid guide data providing basic information about the program (e.g., title, channel and broadcast time). A first time window and a second time window may be defined such that the grid guide data associated with those programs broadcast within the first time window and the detail guide data associated with those programs broadcast within the second time window are automatically provided in the broadcast stream. The rest of the detail and grid guide data may be furnished upon request when needed. | 11-25-2010
