20090196417Secure disposal of storage data - A data storage device (such as a magnetic disk drive), which has a built-in encryption function using a self generated cipher key. The data storage device uses the cipher key to routinely encrypt the incoming data without instruction and/or control by the host system or other components that are external to the device and its dedicated controls (e.g., a disk drive controller card). The encryption function is a built-in function or self-contained function of the drive and/or it dedicated controller. To permanently delete the entire content of the drive, the cipher key is located and erased to render the ciphertext that is stored in the storage device unusable. In another embodiment of the present invention, the data disposal is managed on a file basis through the use of a plurality of internally generated file-specific cipher keys, which are managed through the aid of an internal key library.08-06-2009
20090198932Secure direct platter access - Bulk data transfers by directly accessing a persistent and secured area on the data storage device, e.g., a disk drive having a magnetic storage medium, without relying on the system operating system to execute its read/write operations. For a disk drive, the Protected Area Run Time Interface Extension (PARTIES) technology is applied to create and organize a secured sub-area within a secured storage area. The secured sub-area is a data buffer to and from which large data file transfers can be made with data authenticity and confidentiality. Since this new secured sub-area is not organized and protected by the operating system, it is inherently protected from attack by viruses or Trojan horse software whose effectiveness depends on their ability to maliciously direct the operating system. In addition, the read/write operations bypass command payload limits while reducing data and command validation costs.08-06-2009
20100031057Traffic analysis resistant storage encryption using implicit and explicit data - An encryption scheme for mass storage devices employing a tweakable encryption scheme to add variability to the encrypted data to resist attacks by traffic analysis. Explicit tweak and implicit tweak may be used to add variability to plaintext prior to encryption and eventual storage. The tweak information is either stored on the storage device along with the encrypted data as in the case of an explicit tweak, or it is derived from another source when needed as in the case of an implicit tweak. The ciphertext is decrypted using either the stored explicit tweak value or derive the implicit tweak value to “de-tweak” the decrypted data prior to usage. The data may be deleted by destroying the cipher key(s) to render the ciphertext useless. The tweak information alone is useless for decryption, as the ciphertext needs to be decrypted with the cipher key(s).02-04-2010

20110191662TRAVEL GUIDES FORMED BY AGGREGATION OF LOCATION-AWARE CONTENT FROM MULTIPLE PUBLISHERS THROUGH A UNIFIED INTERFACE - The present invention relates to the field of publishing and distributing information on a network. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems, methods, and devices for identifying multiple published entities each having electronic-based content of interest for a user, selecting portions of the e-content based on user preferences, aggregating the portions of e-content into a virtual compilation of e-content (e.g., virtual book) in a manner such that the portions of e-content appear to originate from the compilation and not the original source. The present invention is particularly advantageous in the travel guide industry where now portions of several larger travel guides can be aggregated together to provide mobile device users information tailored to a mobile device user's actual, exact, approximate, or anticipated location and optionally further refined in combination with the user's personal preferences. Even further, one of the key business implications of the aggregation scheme is that a publisher can take an existing work and divide it down into a set of smaller guides, even with some overlaps in content. Then the publisher can market those smaller guides at a lower price than the single complete guide to generate higher revenues than with publishing the indivisible discrete content alone (original complete travel guide).08-04-2011

20090157677METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR ENABLEMENT OF SOCIAL NETWORKING BASED ON ASSET OWNERSHIP - A skill finder service receives directly from a user or through a social networking service a request for help with an asset. The skill finder service finds users skilled in the asset from asset data collected by an asset management service. The skill finder service searches the asset data for assets that match the asset in the request, and for each matching asset, determines the user who owns the matching asset. The skill finder service creates a list of skilled users and sends the list to the requesting user. The requesting user can contact one or more of the skilled users for help with the asset. The skill finder service uses existing data typically obtained by asset data management services to provide a valuable service to users. Further, by using the asset data to find skilled users, the skill finder service lessons or eliminates the need for user-entered expertise listing.06-18-2009

20090042180SYSTEM FOR SAMPLING AND TRACKING PLANT MATERIAL - A system and method for processing, i.e., sampling and tracking, plant material requires the ability to identify each plant in a plurality of plants. Initially, samples are taken from selected plants and are collected in respective storage locations in a magazine. During sampling, the identity of the plant source for each plant sample is stored. Further, the identity of each storage location receiving a plant sample is stored. Subsequently, the samples are transferred from the storage locations and are placed in respective wells of a receiving member for further downstream processing. Again, the identity of each well receiving a plant sample is stored. As a result, a plant sample in a well can be traced back to its plant source.02-12-2009
20090139353DEVICE FOR SAMPLING PLANT MATERIAL - A device for collecting plant samples includes a punch and die mechanism for taking leaf plugs from plants. The punch itself includes a punch rod coaxially mounted inside a punch tube. In use, the punch tube has a distal end with two, diametrically opposed projections that interact with the formed aperture to cut a plug from a plant leaf. The punch rod then follows to remove a cut leaf plug from the formed aperture. Also included is a hydraulic subsystem for periodically delivering liquid on the punch and die mechanism to prevent plant debris from clogging the device.06-04-2009
20110213492TRANSFER STATION FOR PLANT MATERIAL SAMPLING AND TRACKING SYSTEM - Systems and methods for processing plant material samples and a transfer station designed for use in such systems and methods. In one embodiment, the system includes a controller, a plant-material sampling device, and a transfer station. The plant-material sampling device is configured to communicate with the controller and to read an identifier of a plant. The sampling device also has a removable magazine, and is designed to take at least one plant sample from multiple plants, place such samples in the magazine, and track the identity of the plant from which each sample is taken. The transfer station is configured to hold, at multiple positions, multiple magazines and multiple trays such that the positions of the magazines are mirrored by the positions of the trays, read an identifier of each magazine, read an identifier of each tray, map storage locations for each one of the magazines to storage locations of one of the trays, and sequentially unload plant samples from the magazines to the trays.09-01-2011
