MULTIPLEX (+/-) STRANDED ARRAYS AND ASSAYS FOR DETECTING CHROMOSOMAL ABNORMALITIES ASSOCIATED WITH CANCER AND OTHER DISEASES - Multiplex (+/−) stranded analyses, such as array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH), are provided for detecting chromosomal rearrangements associated with cancer and other diseases. For example, an illustrative multiplex array for CGH includes discrete plus (+) strand and minus (−) strand DNA probes, complementary to each other but separable on the CGH array. The minus (−) strand DNA probes recover diagnostic information lost to conventional microarrays, since many genes transcribe from the minus (−) strand. In an illustrative system, patient and control DNA samples are prepared for CGH by amplification and labeling using comprehensive primers that generate both plus (+) strands and minus (−) strands of DNA in the samples. The breakpoints of a translocated chromosome may be detected on a multiplex microarray by DNA probes of one polarity, while DNA copy number changes associated with the translocation region may be detected by corresponding DNA probes of the complementary polarity. Related methods for identifying translocation partner genes are also provided. | 04-14-2011

REAL-TIME ANIMATIONS OF EMOTICONS USING FACIAL RECOGNITION DURING A VIDEO CHAT - Embodiments are directed towards displaying an animated video emoticon by augmenting features identified in a video stream. Augmenting features identified in the video stream may include modifying, in whole or in part, some aspects of the identified features but not other aspects. For example, a user may select an animated video emoticon indicating surprise. Surprise may be conveyed by detecting the location of the user's eyes in the video stream, enlarging a size aspect of the eyes so as to appear ‘wide-eyed’, but leaving other aspects such as color and shape unchanged. Then, the location and/or orientation of the eyes in the video stream are tracked, and the augmentation is applied to the eyes at each tracked location and/or orientation. In another embodiment, identified features may be removed from the video stream and replaced with images, graphics, video, and the like. | 03-22-2012

DATA ENTRY SYSTEMS AND METHODS UTILIZING DATA ENTRY MESSAGES - The present invention is directed to systems and methods for entering data into a database configured to store a plurality of database records, each record having a set of predetermined data fields. The method includes the steps of: (a) creating a data entry message, wherein the data entry message includes at least one data segment, each data segment having (i) a data field identifier corresponding to a data field selected from the set of predetermined data fields, and (ii) a data field entry; (b) sending the data entry message over a communications network; (c) receiving the data entry message; (d) creating a new database record having a plurality of data fields corresponding to the set of predetermined data fields; and (e) for each data segment, storing the data field entry in a data field corresponding to the data field identifier. | 10-22-2009

CONTINUOUS MICROSEISMIC MAPPING FOR REAL-TIME 3D EVENT DETECTION AND LOCATION - A method for the detection and localization of microseismic events is proposed which operates in real-time. It provides hypocenters in three spatial dimensions along with an estimate of the event origin time. Sensor positions may be distributed in 3D space, and are not confined to linear arrays in vertical wells. The method combines and improves two existing approaches. For detection and localization purposes the method makes use of the generalized beam-forming and forward modeling properties defined in the “CMM” algorithm. For location refinement, the method uses a stabilized version of the generalized “Geiger” approach. | 10-15-2009
METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR MICROSEISMIC MAPPING - Methods and systems for the detection and localization of microseismic events are proposed which operate in real-time. Hypocenters in three spatial dimensions are provided along with an estimate of the event origin time. Sensor positions may be distributed in 3D space, and are not confined to linear arrays in vertical wells. A location of the event is approximated and a grid search, based on the approximate location of the event, is used to derive a residual function over a finer sampling followed by a gradient search of the residual function to optimize the location of the event. | 10-14-2010

OPTO-MECHANICAL OPTICAL PATH RETARDATION MULTIPLIER FOR OPTICAL MEMS APPLICATIONS - An optical Micro Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) device provides an optical path retardation multiplier. The MEMS device includes a moveable corner cube reflector, a fixed minor and a MEMS actuator. The moveable corner cube reflector is optically coupled to receive an incident beam and reflect the incident beam through 180 degrees towards the fixed mirror. The fixed minor is optically coupled to reflect a reflected beam back towards the moveable corner cube reflector along a reverse path of the incident beam. The MEMS actuator is coupled to the moveable corner cube reflector to cause a displacement of the moveable corner cube reflector to extend an optical path length of the reflected beam. | 10-21-2010

LONG RANGE TRAVEL MEMS ACTUATOR - An electrostatic comb drive actuator for a MEMS device includes a flexure spring assembly and first and second comb drive assemblies, each coupled to the flexure spring assembly on opposing sides thereof. Each of the first and second comb assemblies includes fixed comb drive fingers and moveable comb drive fingers coupled to the flexure spring assembly and extending towards the fixed comb drive fingers. The comb drive fingers are divided equally between the first and second comb drive assemblies and placed symmetrically about a symmetry axis of the flexure spring assembly. When electrically energized, the moveable comb drive fingers of both the first and second comb drive assemblies simultaneously move towards the fixed comb drive fingers of the first and second comb drive assemblies. | 10-21-2010
Compensated MEMS FTIR Spectrometer Architecture - A Micro Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) spectrometer architecture compensates for verticality and dispersion problems using balancing interfaces. A MEMS spectrometer/interferometer includes a beam splitter formed on a first surface of a first medium at an interface between the first medium and a second medium, a first mirror formed on a second surface of the first medium, a second mirror formed on a third surface of the first medium and balancing interfaces designed to minimize both a difference in tilt angles between the surfaces and a difference in phase errors between beams reflected from the first and second mirrors. | 03-10-2011
