Synthesis of Glycerolipid Carbamates and Dicarbamates and Their Use as an Antitumor Compounds - The syntheses and in vitro antitumor properties of carbamate-containing, dicarbamate-containing, and ureido-containing phospholipid compounds that have an ether linkage at the C-1 position of a glycerol backbone, a carbamate, dicarbamate, or ureido moiety at the C-2 position of the glycerol backbone, and a phosphocholine, phosphonocholine, or glycoside moiety at the C-3 position of the glycerol backbone are described. The synthesis and antiproliferative activity of ether lipids with a naphthol moiety at the C-1 position are also described. These compounds were shown to be potent inhibitors of cancer cell growth. These compounds are useful for killing cancer cells and treating cancer. | 02-12-2009

System and Method for Effecting Control of Remote Computers - The invention describes a system and methodology for controlling multiple devices simultaneously from one control device. The control device is provided with a display having a plurality of windows, each having a visual representation related to the activity of the multiple devices. By relaying commands effected at the control device through a intermediary server, it is possible to simultaneously effect a corresponding processing of the same commands at each of the multiple devices. On effecting a command the multiple devices relay back, through the server, an image representative of the result of the processing of that command to the control device for display. | 12-10-2009

Treatment for liver disease - The present invention is based on the finding that the artificial induction of hepatic stellate cell (HSC) apoptosis in vivo can promote the resolution of liver fibrosis. Thus, the present invention provides methods for treating liver disease in a subject involving administration of an inducer of apoptosis which is capable of selectively inducing hepatic stellate cell apoptosis in the liver of the subject or of an agent which is capable of giving rise to such an inducer in the subject. In addition, the invention provides methods for treating liver fibrosis in a subject comprising the selective delivery of an inducer of apoptosis specifically to the hepatic stellate cells of the subject or of an agent which is capable of giving rise to an inducer of hepatic stellate cell apoptosis. | 09-11-2008

Methods for the Screening of Antibacterial Substances - The present invention concerns a method for the screening of antibacterial substances comprising a step of determining the ability of a candidate substance to inhibit the activity of a purified enzyme selected from the group consisting of: (i) a D-aspartate ligase comprising a polypeptide having an amino acid sequence possessing at least 50% amino acid identity with an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID No 1 to SEQ ID No 10, or a biologically active fragment thereof; and (ii) a L,D-transpeptidase comprising a polypeptide having an amino acid sequence possessing at least 50% amino acid identity with the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID No 11, or a biologically active fragment thereof. | 12-17-2009
METHODS FOR TREATING LATENT TUBERCULOSIS - A method for treating individuals affected with latent tuberculosis comprising a step of administering an effective amount of one or more carbapenem compounds to the said individuals. | 01-28-2010

Methods for determining the redox status of proteins - A method for determining the redox status of a protein sample, the method comprising the steps of: a) contacting the sample with a first label adapted to bind to at least one reduced cysteine group therein; b) contacting the sample with a reducing agent to reduce at least one oxidized cysteine group therein; c) contacting the sample with a second label adapted to bind to any reduced cysteine groups produced in step (b); and d) determining the ratio of the signal from the first label to the signal from the second label wherein the ratio indicates the redox status. | 12-11-2008

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR LEAD SMELTING - A method for producing lead involves feeding lead concentrate, flux and solid fuel passing to a feed preparation unit. The prepared, mixed feed is then passed to a lead smelting furnace, such as an ISASMELT furnace or other top entry, submerged lance furnace. Air or oxygen, is injected into the molten charge in the ISASMELT furnace via the submerged lance. The feed mixture is converted into lead bullion and a lead-containing slag. The slag removed from the furnace is formed into lumps having a desirable size range. The slag lumps, together with coke and flux are fed into a blast furnace. In the blast furnace, the slag is converted into lead bullion and discard slag. The lead bullion removed may be subsequently fed to a lead refinery for further treatment. | 10-16-2008
