20090139403WATER REMOVAL DOWNSTREAM OF A TURBINE - A rigid or semi-rigid demister pad is positioned between an air turbine and an inertial water removal device such as extractor in an air conditioning system for an aircraft. The demister pad comprises packed fibers or strands whose diameter typically ranges from approximately 10 or fewer microns to approximately 280 microns. The demister is capable of catching very small droplets discharged from the air turbine that coalesce into larger droplets that exit the demister pad and enter an adjacent water removal device downstream from the pad to separate the larger water droplets from the stream of air. This avoids using a water separator containing a coalescer bag that requires frequent maintenance and is sensitive to dirt and freezing. The demister can operate at freezing temperature, is not dirt-sensitive and requires no maintenance.06-04-2009

20080260819SUSTAINED RELEASE COMPOSITIONS OF DRUGS - A sustained release pharmaceutical composition has been developed. The composition resists dose dumping when broken, crushed or chewed, which enhances the safety of the dosage form should it be accidentally or intentionally physically compromised. In the preferred embodiment, a drug is modified to increase its lipophilicity. In preferred embodiments the modified drug is homogeneously dispersed within microparticles composed of a material that is either slowly soluble or not soluble in water. In some embodiments the drug containing microparticles coated with one or more coating layers. The sustained release composition retards the release of drug, even if the physical integrity of the formulation is compromised (for example, by chewing or crushing) and the resulting material is placed in 0.1N HCl. However, when administered as directed, the drug is slowly released from the composition as the composition is broken down or dissolved gradually within the GI tract by a combination of diffusion, surfactant action of bile acids, mechanical erosion, and in some embodiments, enzymatic degradation.10-23-2008

In one embodiment the modified drug is homogeneously dispersed within microparticles composed of a material that is either slowly soluble or not soluble in water. In some embodiments the drug containing microparticles or drug particles are coated with one or more coating layers, where at least one coating is water insoluble and preferably organic solvent insoluble. The abuse-deterrent composition prevents the immediate release of a substantial portion of drag, even if the physical integrity of the formulation is compromised (for example, by chopping with a blade or crushing) and the resulting material is placed in water, snorted, or swallowed. However, when administered as directed, the drug is slowly released from the composition as the composition is broken down or dissolved gradually within the GI tract by a combination of enzymatic degradation, surfactant action of bile acids, and mechanical erosion.10-14-2010

20080258049Quantum repeater using atomic cascade transitions - Via atomic cascade emission, an entangled pair of photons may be generated. A first one of the entangled pair may be ideal for long-distance communication. The other one may be suited for mapping to a long-lived atomic memory. Also, a deterministic single photon may be produced using a feedback system. If the feedback system indicates that an excitation exists in an atomic ensemble, then the atomic ensemble may be hit with a laser to produce the deterministic single photon. Furthermore, gas in the atomic ensemble may be subdivided into independent elements each of which may function as a memory element itself. In addition, dual species matter qubits may be entangled with light. A volume in an atomic ensemble may comprise a first isotope vapor storing a first state of a qubit. The volume may also comprise a second isotope vapor configured to store a second state of the qubit.10-23-2008

20100299454HIERARCHICAL LOSSLESS COMPRESSION - A method is provided for data compression. The data compression method transforms a square of data into a tile of data. The tile of data is then divided into quads of data that are converted into a representative element, a first delta element, a second delta element, a third delta element, and a control word. A new tile of data is then formed with the representative elements, and the process is repeated until a single representative element remains. The single representative element is then embedded into an output stream with the control words and corresponding delta elements. Decompression of the data is symmetrical to the encoding once the bit stream has been parsed.11-25-2010

For example, a perpendicular write head may be placed in a magnetic field with a first angle, e.g., non-parallel and non-perpendicular, to the air bearing surface and the inductance is measured. After altering the angle of the magnetic field the inductance is again tested. In another embodiment, the angles may be parallel and perpendicular to the air bearing surface. 20090147389Read sensor testing using thermal magnetic fluctuation noise spectra - A read head is tested by measuring the thermal magnetic fluctuation noise spectrum. A non-uniformity in the magnetic field of the free layer is produced and the thermal magnetic fluctuation noise spectrum is measured, with and/or without an external magnetic field applied. A peak in the thermal magnetic fluctuation noise spectrum can be used to derive the desired dimension of the free layer, such as track width and stripe height. The resulting measurement may then be fed back into the process control for the production of the read heads if desired. Additionally, the stiffness of the free layer and the strength of the reference layer may be determined using ferromagnetic resonance peaks in the thermal magnetic fluctuation noise spectrum.06-11-2009
20120057446SUB-OPTICAL-RESOLUTION KERR SIGNAL DETECTION FOR PERPENDICULAR WRITE-HEAD CHARACTERIZATION - A property, such as a quality parameter, of a write pole in a write head is determined using an optical metrology device, where the write pole is smaller than the optical resolution limit of the metrology device. The metrology device produces polarized light that is reflected off the write pole while the write pole is magnetized either during or after excitation with a write current. The magnetization alters the polarization state of the light, which can be analyzed to transform the altered polarization state into intensity. The intensity of the light is detected over the point spread function of the optics in the metrology device and an intensity value is generated. The intensity value is used to determine the quality parameter of the write pole, e.g., by comparison to a threshold or reference intensity value, which may be generated empirically or theoretically.03-08-2012
