20090175821Modified therapeutic peptides with extended half-lives in vivo - A method for protecting a peptide from peptidase activity in vivo, the peptide being composed of between 2 and 50 amino acids and having a C-terminus and an N-terminus and a C-terminus amino acid and an N-terminus amino acid is described. In the first step of the method, the peptide is modified by attaching a reactive group to the C-terminus amino acid, to the N-terminus amino acid, or to an amino acid located between the N-terminus and the C-terminus, such that the modified peptide is capable of forming a covalent bond in vivo with a reactive functionality on a blood component. In the next step, a covalent bond is formed between the reactive group and a reactive functionality on a blood component to form a peptide-blood component conjugate, thereby protecting said peptide from peptidase activity. The final step of the method involves the analyzing of the stability of the peptide-blood component conjugate to assess the protection of the peptide from peptidase activity.07-09-2009

20080294223Fitting a Neural Prosthesis Using Impedance and Electrode Height - The invention is a method of automatically adjusting an electrode array to the neural characteristics of an individual subject. The response to electrical neural stimulation varies from subject to subject. Measure of impedance may be used to predict the electrode height from the neural tissue and, thereby, predict the threshold of perception. Alternatively, electrode height may be measured directly to predict the threshold of perception. Also, impedance measurement may be used to quickly identify defective electrodes and proper electrode placement.11-27-2008
20090312818Visual Prosthesis for Control of Spatiotemporal Interactions - In a visual prosthesis or other neural stimulator it is advantageous to provide non-overlapping pulses in order to provide independent control of brightness from different electrodes. Non-overlapping pulses on geographically close electrodes avoid electric-field interaction which leads to brightness summation or changes in the shape and area of percepts. It is advantageous to apply pulses to nearby electrodes in a way that the currents do not overlap in time at all. The new finding is that even a small amount of separation results in a significant improvement as small as (ie. 0.225 msec). ‘Nearby’ is defined as within a few millimeters of each other. Another new finding is that there is some additional benefit of separating the pulses in time even further. In particular, some experiments showed a benefit of separating them more than 1.8 msec. Another experiment showed a benefit of separating them greater than 3 msec. But, there is probably no benefit to separating them more than 5 msec. The same parameters that provide independent control of brightness also produce spatial patterns that the subjects' report as being similar to the sum of individual electrode phosphenes. Simultaneous stimulation of multiple electrodes can sometimes produce physical sensation or discomfort in the eye. Time-shifting the pulses cab also be used to reduce the physical sensations felt by the patient.12-17-2009

20120009630STABILIZED REVERSE TRANSCRIPTASE FUSION PROTEINS - Stabilized reverse transcriptase fusion proteins including a thermostable reverse transcriptase connected to a stabilizer protein are described. Attaching the stabilizer protein to the thermostable reverse transcriptase stabilizes the fusion protein and can aid in its purification, provide increased solubility, allow for longer storage, or allow the fusion protein to be used under more rigorous conditions such as higher temperature. The stabilized reverse transcriptase fusion protein can also include a linker between the stabilizer protein and the thermostable reverse transcriptase. The stabilized reverse transcriptase fusion proteins are suitable for use in nucleic acid amplification methods such as the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and other applications involving cDNA synthesis.01-12-2012

20090309967Hand-held inspection tool and method - The hand-held inspection tool enhances the ability of an on-site inspector to detect and communicate the presence of contamination on an object or in an area. An on-site inspector directs an excitation light in the sensing head of the tool into an area of interest. If the targeted contamination is present, the excitation light causes the contamination to emit fluorescence. The emitted fluorescent light passes through a narrow spectral band-pass video camera filter and is detected by a video camera mounted in the tool sensing head. The video camera transmits the image to a display visible to the on-site inspector. The invention also includes a means of recording, documenting, and wirelessly communicating the inspection process so that remotely located personnel can view the inspection, and respond to the inspection findings in real time.12-17-2009

20100324852DETERMINING THE RESONANCE PARAMETERS FOR MECHANICAL OSCILLATORS - The prior art describes the application of mechanical oscillators for the measurement of corrosion and/or deposition. Mechanical oscillators employ the use of resonance parameters, frequency and the quality factor Q, for the measurement of corrosion or deposition. However, the prior art does not consider the required precision for measuring frequency or Q in the presence of noise to make these measurements. In particular, the ability of the mechanical oscillator to measure small amounts of metal loss or deposition is not only dependent upon the mechanical design but is limited by the precision in determining the resonance frequency and Q. The present invention discloses methods for measuring these resonance parameters with a high precision in the presence of noise. This degree of precision is required to maximize the utility of these devices as sensitive probes for corrosion and deposition (fouling) measurement. All of the embodiments described herein employ curve fitting consistent with modeling the mechanical oscillator as a simple harmonic oscillator. This curve fitting procedure, combined with averaging and utilizing signal processing parameters to mitigate noise effects, adds considerable precision in measuring resonance parameters.12-23-2010
