20100233276 | COMPOSITIONS IN POWDER FORM MADE OF SOFT AGGLOMERATES OF A MICRONIZED DRUG AND OF A TWO-COMPONENTS EXCIPIENT, AND PROCESS FOR THEIR PREPARATION - The described agglomeration of drug microparticles blended with excipient microparticles is a technique for the size enlargement of micronized products that could be damaged by granulation or compaction techniques. These agglomerates can be used as oral prompt or delayed-release dosage forms administered as they are or dispersed in a liquid. The composition and quantity of the excipient microparticles resulted to be the crucial factors for the agglomerate quality. Therefore, adjusting the content of surface-active agent between 8-20%, of the excipient microparticles it is possible to agglomerate microparticles of drugs that could not be agglomerated per se. Increasing the surfactant concentration in the spray-dried excipient microparticles or increasing the fraction of these excipient microparticles in the blend, the agglomeration was improved. The spray drying technique concentrates the surface-active agent on the microparticle surface. By tumbling, the surface-active agent present on microparticles excipient surface was spread to fill the inter-particle interstices of drug particles giving rise to more resistant agglomerates. This phenomenon occurred also by vibration; the production in this case was quicker. | 09-16-2010 |

20090136237 | Coupling structure for optical fibres and process for making it - A coupling structure for coupling optical radiation, i.e., light, between an optical fibre and an optical device, e.g., a laser diode or a photodiode. The coupling structure has an optical through-via which guides the optical radiation to or from the optical fibre. Light exiting the fibre travels through a guidance channel so it remains substantially confined to a narrow optical path that mimics the fibre core. Conversely, light enters the fibre after having traveled through the guidance channel. The guidance channel has a first core region, the “channel core”, having first refractive index surrounded by a second region, the “channel cladding” having a second refractive index smaller than the first refractive index. The coupling structure, including the guidance channel, is preferably made of semiconductor-based material, more preferably of silicon-based material. The guidance channel is preferably silicon oxide. The coupling structure further has a fibre drive-in element, which facilitates insertion and alignment of the optical fibre to the guidance channel. | 05-28-2009 |

20090252188 | Misalignment Prevention in an External Cavity Laser Having Temperature Stabilisation of the Resonator and the Gain Medium - The present invention relates to an external-cavity laser module comprising a thermoelectric cooler (TEC) including an upper carrier plate having an upper surface, said TEC being configured to stabilise the temperature of the upper surface at a substantially constant temperature. The laser module further comprises a laser assembly mounted on an optical bench, which is in thermal coupling with said upper surface, said laser assembly comprising a gain medium for emitting an optical beam into the external cavity and an end mirror. | 10-08-2009 |
20100091804 | PHASE CONTROL BY ACTIVE THERMAL ADJUSTMENTS IN AN EXTERNAL CAVITY LASER - The present invention relates to a wavelength tuneable external-cavity laser module, the laser being tuneable across a predetermined wavelength range and comprising: a thermally stabilised substrate; a gain medium for emitting an optical beam passing through the external cavity along an optical axis, said gain medium being placed in thermal contact with the thermally stabilised substrate; an end mirror for receiving and reflecting the optical beam within the external cavity, and a phase element for controlling the phase of the optical beam and being positioned within the external cavity between the gain medium and the end mirror, wherein said phase element comprises a material having a refractive index that varies in response to changes in temperature and has a transmissivity substantially independent of wavelength across said predetermined wavelength range. The thermally-controllable phase element in the laser external cavity is configured so as to induce a phase variation that compensates the drop in the output power due to ageing or to external temperature variation. According to a preferred embodiment, a heating element is placed in thermal contact to the phase element. The temperature of the phase element can be increased to “bring back” the output power to a value very close to the initial value. Preferably, the phase element is a silicon plate. By thermally controlling an intra-cavity phase element it is possible to vary continuously the output power as a function of the injection current. Therefore, the solution has the advantage that it is possible to configure the ECL to laser at a desired value of the output power selected along a mono tonic function of the injection current. | 04-15-2010 |
20100177793 | Passive Phase Control in an External Cavity Laser - An external-cavity laser module includes a package defining an enclosure, the package including a base having a surface internal to the enclosure, a thermoelectric cooler within the enclosure, the thermoelectric cooler including an upper carrier plate and a lower carrier plate, the lower carrier plate being placed on the internal surface of the base and the thermoelectric cooler (TEC) being configured to stabilise the temperature of the upper carrier plate at a substantially constant temperature. The laser module further includes a laser assembly housed within the enclosure, including a gain medium for emitting an optical beam into the external cavity and an end mirror. Variations of the environmental temperature with respect to the thermally stabilised temperature cause mechanical deformations of the TEC upper carrier plate that is in thermal coupling with the laser assembly. The mechanical deformations in turn induce variations in the optical path length of the laser cavity. Thermal bridge of the gain medium to the environmental temperature is achieved by the use of a thermal bridge element for conducting heat either from or to the gain medium. | 07-15-2010 |

20090100133 | Slow-Dynamic Load Balancing System and Computer-Readable Medium - A load balancing system and a corresponding computer-readable medium are proposed. The load balancing system is used in environments (e.g., implementing a licensing management application) wherein each client is associated with a preferred server storing specific information for the client. Each client periodically detects a workload and a response time of all the servers. The client selects a subset of nearest servers (according to their response times). The server in that subset with the lowest workload is set as an eligible server. Whenever a ratio between the workload of the preferred server and the workload of the eligible server exceeds a predefined threshold value (e.g., 1.1), the client switches to the eligible server (transferring the corresponding specific information). The system of the invention exhibits a slow dynamic, and tends to reach a steady condition (wherein the specific information of the clients is not continuously moved across the system). | 04-16-2009 |
