20090159310 | Photonic-Crystal Transparent-Conductor Assembly - A photonic-crystal (PC)-based transparent-conductor assembly is disclosed, wherein the assembly includes a photonic-crystal cloaking element (PCCE) that surrounds at least one opaque conducting element. The PCCE has a refractive index distribution designed to “cloak” the at least one conductor contained therein from light incident upon the PCCE within a select wavelength range. The cloaking effect from the PCCE leaves light incident upon the assembly traveling in its original path as if undisturbed, thereby effectively rendering the conductor, as well as the PCCE, “transparent.” This allows for the formation of a transparent conductor from an otherwise opaque conductor. One or more such PC transparent-conductor assemblies can be configured so that a pattern of otherwise opaque conducting elements can form a transparent electrode array useful for a variety of electric-field-driven optical devices such as optical displays. | 06-25-2009 |
20090320526 | Pre-Form For And Methods Of Forming A Hollow-Core Slotted PBG Optical Fiber For An Environmental Sensor - A preform for forming a hollow-core, slotted photonic band-gap (PBG) optical fiber for use in an environmental sensor, and methods of forming such a fiber using the preform are disclosed. The preform comprises a slotted cladding tube that surrounds a slotted, hollow-core PBG cane. The slots in the cladding tube and PBG cane are longitudinally formed and substantially aligned with each other. When the preform is drawn, the slots merge to form an elongated side opening or slot in the resulting hollow-core PBG fiber. In one case, the slot reaches the hollow core upon drawing, while in another case a second step is used to extend the slot to connect to the hollow core. The fiber is used to form an environmental sensor for sensing the presence of a target substance in an environment. The slot formed in the PBG region of the fiber forms a ridge waveguide wherein a portion of the light that otherwise is confined to the hollow core as a bound mode travels in the slot. The target substance affects the light traveling in the fiber, allowing for the target substance to be detected. | 12-31-2009 |

Methods for manufacturing photonic crystal fibers include hot-forming a glass material into a glass tube having a non-circular outer cross-section, drawing the glass tube to obtain a plurality of canes, stacking the canes to create a preform build and drawing the preform build to obtain a photonic crystal fiber. | 04-29-2010 |

The surface comprises at least one set of topological features that together have a re-entrant geometry that prevents a decrease in contact angle and pinning of drops comprising at least one of water and sebaceous oils. | 11-11-2010 |
20110123149 | Fiber Assembly Employing Photonic Band-Gap Optical Fiber - A fiber assembly having at least one photonic band-gap fiber and opto-electronic devices coupled to the at least one fiber at either end. The opto-electronic devices serve as electrical-to-optical (EO) and optical-to-electrical (OE) converters and provide industry-standard electrical interfaces to respective electronic devices. The photonic band-gap fiber has a hollow core so that light travels through air rather than glass, thereby providing a number of advantages over glass-based optical fiber assemblies used to connect electronic devices. A bent optical fiber coupler for use in the fiber assembly is also disclosed. | 05-26-2011 |
