20090069084 | System and Methods for Monitoring and Controlling the Actions of an Avatar in a Virtual Environment - An Internet-based computer application displayed on a multimedia video display system that records and compiles statistics based upon the interactions of an avatar, representing a gamer, within a virtual environment. The avatar is able to act in the virtual environment by controlling, manipulating, operating, or otherwise interacting with objects and other avatars within the virtual environment. Within the virtual environment, an avatar is presented with pre-determined options controlled by variables set by the computer application for each possible interaction. The actions of the avatar are recorded in at least one database. The application can compile the data and provide summary statistics regarding the avatar's performance within the virtual environment. An interface screen can be used to view the summary statistics and alter the variables to change or adjust the options available to an avatar for interaction with objects in the virtual environment. | 03-12-2009 |

20110299572 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SUBBAND SIGNAL DEMODULATION IN A TRANSPONDER SATELLITE COMMUNICATION LINK CONTAINING A COMPONENT OF RELAYED INTERFERENCE - A method and apparatus at a local terminal are described for demodulating a remote-terminal signal located at a subband offset frequency in a frequency subband of relayed interference from a transponder satellite link. The demodulation of the remote-terminal signal is accomplished by transferring the digital data that produced the local-terminal transmit signal to the local-terminal receiver. The digital data is time-delayed and converted to a narrowband offset-constellation signal that cancels the relayed interference in an adaptive equalizer. Providing cancellation in the subband of the relayed interference produces larger interference cancellation factors than those obtained in conventional broadband cancellation systems. A phase-noise error signal is also generated and used to increase cancellation levels limited by phase noise generated in the satellite link frequency converters. Additionally the receiver converter frequencies are chosen such that errors in estimating the subband offset frequency do not affect cancellation in the adaptive equalizer. | 12-08-2011 |

20090305266 | TEST FOR OVARIAN CANCER BY DETECTING ABNORMALITY IN FANCD2 PATHWAY - Methods are provided for determining diagnosing ovarian and breast cancer in a subject, including diagnosing the predisposition of a subject's risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer. The methods include selecting a subject, for example a subject with one or more risk factors for developing ovarian cancer or breast cancer, and detecting a decrease in the activity of the Fanconi anemia (FA) non-nuclear core (NNC) component in the subject. Such a decrease is indicative of a predisposition to ovarian cancer and/or breast cancer in the subject. These methods can be used to monitor the response of a subject to agents designed to prevent breast and ovarian cancer, for example an anti-neoplastic agent. Methods also are provided for identifying agents of use in preventing breast and ovarian cancer. | 12-10-2009 |

20090313876 | SENSITIVITY ADJUSTMENT FOR ELECTRONIC BITE ALERT FOR A FISHING REEL - A fishing reel, such as a spincast reel or a spinning reel, has a clutch assembly mounted on a shaft adjacent to the rotating component, the clutch assembly for frictional engagement with a rotating component. The clutch assembly has a first and a second protuberance. A bite alert contact is located for engagement with the first protuberance. A calibration member is adjacent the clutch assembly for engagement with the second protuberance. The calibration member provides a selectable amount of resistance to rotation of the clutch assembly, thereby regulating an amount of rotational force required to activate the bite alert contact. The fishing reel may further include a sensitivity switch for adjusting the selectable amount of resistance provided by the calibration member, which may adjust the resistance in discrete amounts. | 12-24-2009 |

20120331029 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DISTRIBUTED CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT - Method and apparatus for replicating data structures over a network in which each data structure is assigned an owner node among a plurality of networked peer nodes. Preferably that owner can be ascertained through information in the data structure. When an update to the data structure is desired by a non-owner, a request to modify the data structure is sent out on the network and when received by the owner, the owner performs the modification. The owner node can then notify the other nodes regarding the update. The method, implemented through a single-writer, multiple-reader paradigm, insures availability, partition tolerance and eventual consistency; it avoids the high overhead costs and single point of failure drawbacks of the prior art centralized management and locking protocols. Administrators can connect to any peer node in the network to manage, monitor and request modifications to a data structure. | 12-27-2012 |
20130024615 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DIFFERENTIATED DATA PLACEMENT - Method and apparatus for locating data on disk storage, wherein multiple instances of data can be stored at different locations to satisfy different use requirements such as read access, write access, and data security. The method allows a data storage system, such as a file system, to provide both read optimized and write optimized performance on disk storage of different types (e.g., sizes and speed). | 01-24-2013 |
20130132800 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ALLOCATING ERASURE CODED DATA TO DISK STORAGE - Allocation process that allows erasure coded data to be stored on any of a plurality of disk drives, in a pool of drives, so that the allocation is not tied to a fixed group of drives. Still further, the encoded data can be generated by any of multiple different erasure coding algorithms, where again storage of the encoded data is not restricted to a single group of drives based on the erasure algorithm being utilized to encode the data. In another embodiment, the encoded data can be “stacked” (aligned) on select drives to reduce the number of head seeks required to access the data. As a result of these improvements, the system can dynamically determine which one of multiple erasure coding algorithms to utilize for a given incoming data block, without being tied to one particular algorithm and one particular group of storage devices as in the prior art. | 05-23-2013 |
20130227209 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTENT DERIVED DATA PLACEMENT IN MEMORY - Apparatus and method for placing data based on the content of the data in random access memory such that indexing operations are not required. A strong (e.g., cryptographic) hash is applied to a data element resulting in a signature. A weaker hash function is then applied to the signature to generate a storage location in memory for the data element. The weaker hash function assigns multiple data elements to the same storage location while the signature comprises a unique identifier for locating a particular data element at this location. In one embodiment a plurality of weak hash functions are applied successively to increase storage space utilization. In other embodiments, the assigned storage location can be determined by one or more attributes of the data element and/or the storage technology, e.g, long-lived versus short-lived data and/or different regions of the memory having different performance (e.g., access latency memory lifetime) characteristics. | 08-29-2013 |
